Naturalist Enzo Suma, who is now 40, lives in Puglia, a region in southern Italy whose long coastline faces the Adriatic Sea. Floating waste accumulates in this relatively enclosed part of the Mediterranean, unlike the open ocean, where the waste tends to be spread over a vast area. Feeling concerned about that, Suma makes it a habit to pick up the washed-up waste along the shore, especially after big winter storms.
One day, Suma was walking along the beach near his home when he discovered a bottle of Coke. Suma noticed on the bottle that the price, clearly printed on the bottom, was in lire, a currency that hadn’t been used in Italy since it was replaced by the euro in 2002. Could a plastic container have well survived in the Mediterranean, he wondered, for about two decades
That led to him founding the Archeoplastica museum. It has a collection of about 500 unique pieces recovered from Italian shores and the Coke bottle is the first one of them. All collection demonstrates the unsettling life force of plastic waste in the environment. “Seeing that a product people may have used 30, 40, or 50 years ago remains still unchanged, you’ll feel different. It’s a great shock,” Suma said to a reporter. So Suma often exhibits selected pieces from the Archeoplastica collection at local schools around his hometown of Ostuni.
“The playful side of the work allows you to arrive at the less beautiful side of things,”
Suma acknowledged. “Plastic is a kind of useful substance. But it’s unthinkable that a water bottle, made from a material designed to last so long, can be used for just a few days—or even minutes—before becoming garbage. Clean the beaches. Clean the oceans. Recycle. But if we are still throwing out plastics, none of those are going to be long-term solutions.”
24.What’s Suma’s concern about his living place
A. Its long coastline is disappearing.
B. Big storms frequently hit the area.
C. Floating waste spreads over a vast area.
D. The waste pollution on shore is worsening.
25. What can be learned about the objects in the Archeoplastica museum
A. They have a history of more than half a century.
B. They were quite valuable before turning into waste.
C. They’re more like educational exhibits than garbage.
D. They have stronger life force than ordinary plastic products.
26. Which of the following can best describe Enzo Suma
A. Creative, devoted and socially responsible.
B. Enthusiastic, ambitious and adventurous.
C. Generous, cautious and humorous.
D. Curious, efficient and playful.
27. What does Suma intend to tell us by his words in the last paragraph
A. The birth of plastics has greatly served humans.
B. The key to tackling the plastic pollution is to stop littering.
C. The plastic problem can be solved by cleaning and recycling.
D. People should be more aware of the powerful functions of plastics.
C
In today’s motivational literature, failure is often viewed as something to be celebrated. Inspirational speakers are fond of quoting the words of the novelist Samuel Beckett-“Fail again. Fail better.” It seems that disappointments are an essential stepping stone to success, a turning point in our life story that will ultimately end in victory.
However, psychological researches find most of us struggle to handle failure constructively. In other words, we fail to “fail forward”. We find ways to devalue the task at which we failed, and become less motivated to persevere and reach our goals. This phenomenon is known as the “sour-grape effect”, which was discovered by Professor Hallgeir Sjastad.
Sjastad explains that “sour-grape effect” is a self-protective mechanism. “Most of us picture ourselves as competent people, so when external feedback suggests otherwise, it poses a serious threat to that self-image,” he says. “The easiest way out is to deny or explain away the external signal, so we can reduce the inconsistency and preserve a positive sense of self. We do this even without noticing.”
If you have one bad interview for your dream job, you might convince yourself that you don’t really want it at all, and stop applying for similar positions. The same goes if you fail to impress at a sports trial, or if a publisher rejects the first submission of your manuscript. “We tend to explain away our shortcomings and convince ourselves our ‘Plan C’ is actually our ‘Plan A’,” Sjastad says.
It doesn’t mean we should persevere in goals all the time. It can be healthy to change ambitions if the process is no longer making us happy. But the “sour-grape effect may lead us to come to this decision prematurely, rather than hanging on a little and seeing whether we might learn and improve.
Failures are unavoidable. By learning to face the disappointment instead of devaluing its importance and pretending nothing happened, you may find it easier to achieve your goals.
28. Why does the author mention the speech of inspirational speakers in paragraph 1
A. To offer an example to handle failure.
B. To describe a shallow understanding of failure.
C. To introduce a common attitude towards failure.
D. To emphasize the importance of experiencing failure.
29. What can we learn from the paragraph 3 about the “sour-grape effect”
A. It protects us from false feedback.
B. It pictures us as competitive people.
C. It poses a severe threat to self-image.
D. It denies negative feedback to ourselves.
30. What is the author’s attitude towards failure
A. Short-sighted. B. Wait-and-see.
C. Objective. D. Skeptical.
31. Which statement would the author most probably agree with
A. Don’t escape when our self-image is broken.
B. Don’t quit when goals no longer make you happy.
C. Never hesitate to replace “Plan A” with “Plan C”.
D. Never forget to maintain a positive sense of self.
D
We learn about the world through the knowledge accumulated over thousands of years. Standing on the shoulders of great men, we don’t have to experience endless trial and error, just as the wheels do not have to be reinvented each time to run a car. But where does our ability to learn from others come from
A study led by Markus Paulus, professor at Loyola Marymount University, shows that the ability has its roots in earliest childhood. “It’s generally assumed that children’s ability to imitate is inborn, but according to our observation, children imitate because they themselves are imitated by caregivers. This interaction enables a cultural transfer of knowledge, which, through generations’ efforts, consequently leads to the development of human beings,” says Markus Paulus.
In this research, Paulus recorded the interaction between mother and child over several months. The babies came into the lab for the first time at the age of 6 months, while their final visit was when they were 18 months old. As they engaged in various play situations, the interactions and imitations of mother and child were analyzed. The long term study showed that the more sensitive a mother was in her interactions with her six month old child and the more often she imitated the baby, the greater the child's overall ability was at the age of 18 months.
Paulus’ research shows that mutual imitation is the keystone of knowledge transfer, through which children successfully learn various skills, such as how to use objects, waving and acquisition of language. “This interaction is the nucleus of learning and, finally, gives rise to evolutionary success of human,” says Paulus.
“Cultural learning is an essential part of human evolution, and it is rooted in the imitation of others, particularly our caregivers during our earliest childhood,” says Paulus. “Through this, we learn from each other and pass on knowledge to the next generation, so certain actions or techniques do not have to be constantly invented again.”
32. Why does the author mention the example of wheels
A. To praise the invention of car wheels.
B. To describe the process of trial and error.
C. To emphasize the necessity of new tools.
D. To show the importance of prior knowledge.
33. What can we learn about Paulus’ research
A. Children’s imitation was recorded by mothers.
B. Sensitive mothers encouraged children’s imitation.
C. Children’s ability was analyzed through interaction.
D. Effective interaction promoted children’s development.
34. What does the underlined word “nucleus” mean in paragraph 4
A. Core. B. Result. C. Aim. D. Content.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every year, our swim team runs the Snack Bar at the pool ground to raise funds for covering the costs of swim competitions and equipment. However, during our first summer meeting last month, Coach Abby informed us that the Snack Bar would be closed for repairs until August.
Upon hearing the news, all the team members were worried that without a Snack Bar, we wouldn’t have funds, which meant, our swim team might have to be dismissed.
Supposing the worst, everyone was out of spirit. “Take it easy! I’ll figure it out. For now, boys, jump into the pool and get swimming!” said Coach Abby, gently comforting us. But none of us were swimming our best, and even though Coach Abby was smiling as usual, it was evident that she was concerned about the situation.
During the break, I proposed exploring alternative approaches for holding a fundraising event. My teammates erupted into a lively conversation. D.J. suggested a karaoke sing-along, while Tamara offered to bring starfish cookies for sale. Manny brought up the idea of games and prizes, while I thought we could run a drink stand.
After a heated discussion, it was decided that each of us would take turns hosting the event throughout the week. Coach Abby heartily approved of our plan. My drink stand was scheduled for the last day of the event.
I was so thrilled about the upcoming event that I began my preparations a day ahead. When I was making the drinks, I noticed a very dark cloud outside the kitchen window. “Uh-oh! That’s not a rain cloud, is it ” I asked my mom, feeling a bit anxious. “Rain would be a disaster! It could ruin everything.”
“You know what they say,” she answered. “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.”
Then came the big day. Coach Abby helped me set up the drink stand and the teammates called out loudly to get everyone together at the pool ground. I hid a big box under the table and nobody knew what was inside. Everything was going smoothly as we wished.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Para 1: Unluckily, the clouds started to gather.
Para 2: After a while, Coach Abby made a cheerful announcement.

Unluckily, dark clouds started to gather in the sky. Before we knew it, the rain was pouring down, making it difficult for everyone to seek shelter near the pool. Upon seeing this, my eyes lit up and I pulled out the box hidden under the table, taking out the stuff prepared earlier. With two booth umbrellas opened and attached to the table, a cosy, dry area came into view. My teammates gathered around me, enthusiastically assisting me to sell the hot chocolate I made with precision, which brought warmth to all those attending the fundraiser. Laughter filled the air once more. 92
After a while, Coach Abby made a cheerful announcement. “Thanks, everyone! We made such an achievement with your joint efforts for the fundraiser that we’ll be able to participate in the swim competition this summer!” The crowd erupted into thunderous applause and cheers. In that moment, I realized the importance of preparing for the worst and working together, especially when the unexpected happened. Today, with mother’s words echoing in my mind, I turned a rainy day into an unforgettable success. Soon, the clouds parted, and rays of sunlight broke through, casting a golden glow over the pool. 88

M: Mum, can I watch the live broadcast of the football match of World Cup tonight
W: Sorry, dear! Twelve o’clock at midnight is too late for a boy of your age to stay up. You can watch the video at 8:00 a.m. or 6:00 p.m.
Text 4
W: I usually eat a simple salad, just lettuce, tomato and carrot.
M: What kind of dressing do you use

Text 5
M: Today is December 3rd. Susan’s birthday is coming. What present do you want to buy for her
W: There is no need to hurry. Her birthday is ten days away.
Text 6
W: Somebody is playing the piano.
M: Yes, it sounds nice. I wish I could play a musical instrument.
W: Can’t you play any musical instrument
M: No, but my sister can play the violin. Actually she is also good at singing. What about you
W: I took guitar lessons for a few months, but I never played the guitar very well. I guess I don’t have much musical talent.
Text 7
M: Do you have any direct flights to New Zealand
W: Sorry, we don’t, but you can fly on Northwest Airlines to Melbourne and then take a connecting flight with Australian Airlines to Auckland. Northwest 212 to Australian Airlines 123 would be just $680, and if you take the weekend flights, you can get a 15% discount.
M: When does Flight 212 leave
W: At 12:30 p.m. Something more, Flight 212 also makes a stop at Singapore.
M: How long will it stop in Singapore
W: Less than one hour.
M: And how long do I have in Melbourne to make the connecting flight
W: Not very long, just one and a half hours.
M: So the time for the whole journey is about ...
W: About twenty-one hours.
M: OK, it works out for my time. So I’d be there in time for a good rest on Sunday afternoon.

W: Lunch is ready, Tom.

M: I intended to tell you after the interview, but now I’ve changed my mind.
W: Have you applied for another job
M: Yes, as a computer operator in a large company.
W Good. That sounds like a job that fits your major. Being a salesman doesn’t suit you at all.
M: Yes, I just didn’t want to disappoint you, so I was planning to tell you after I had got the job.
W: Just believe in yourself and relax a bit. If you show that you’re confident you’ll make them believe that you can do the job. Are you typing your application
M: Yes! Maybe you can give me some advice about it while we have lunch.
Text 9
W: Is this your first time in this hotel
M: Oh, no. I stay here every time I’m in New York on business. What about you
W: This is my first time here without my family. I just wanted some time for enjoying myself this weekend.
M: That’s good for you! My name is Bernard Smith, but you can call me Bernie.
W: Hi, Bernie! I’m Jane.
M: Nice to meet you, Jane. What do you think is the best part of this hotel
W: Well, the service here is much better than most hotels. Considering the price of the rooms here, you might not expect the service to be anything special, but I feel like I am treated like a queen whenever I’m here.
M: I agree that, but my favorite thing about this place is the breakfast. I have never seen so many choices anywhere else.
W: Well, you have a point there, Bernie. I do love eating breakfast here.
