Shirley Raines makes the homeless community in Los Angeles’s skid row (贫民窟) neighborhood feel human. She is the founder of Beauty 2 The Streetz, a nonprofit organization that provides free food, clothing, haircuts, and make-up services for the homeless. And Shirley is now the CNN Hero of the Year!
In 1990, Raines’ 2-year-old son Demetrius passed away from accidental poisoning while at his grandma's house. This event caused a lot of pain for Shirley Raines. The pain lasted for many years. And she did not know what to do about it. She struggled to understand what her purpose was in life. Until one day six years ago, Shirley visited the skid row with a friend from church who asked her to volunteer. She met a lot of homeless people and realized how much help they needed, not just in finding a home, but in finding themselves and their own worth and beauty.
Shirley started to volunteer every Saturday. As she got to know the homeless, they often praised her for her make-up, hair, and style. She started to offer to “make up” the homeless. They loved it, she loved it, they loved her and she loved them. She found purpose. So she started an outdoor beauty salon to serve the homeless, which took most of her spare time.
Raines started sharing her efforts on Instagram with photos and even livestreaming (网络直播) some of her events. Things took off. She formed her nonprofit organization, Beauty 2 The Streetz, and her followers quickly began donating money or time to expand Shirley’s impact. Her Instagram followers grew to over 200,000 people, including many beauty professionals such as licensed hairstylists, barbers, make-up artists. Many of them regularly donate money to keep the services rolling. Others donate their time to help Shirley serve the homeless.
Shirley’s boldness, caring, courage, consistency (连贯性), and desire to take action have led to making a real impact on people’s lives. And she also serves as a role model for and an inspiration to others.
4. How did Shirley change her sad feeling and live purposefully
A. By livestreaming her daily life. B. By giving a hand to the homeless.
C. By taking good care of her family members. D. By interacting with her fans in her free time.
5. What is the most likely to make Shirley the CNN Hero of the Year
A. Her strong character. B. Her make-up services.

6 Why are some beauty professionals mentioned in the fourth paragraph

C. To explain the structure of the organization. D. To demonstrate the diversity of volunteers.
7 Which does the author probably suggest readers do

C. Pass on love. D. Never give up.

Making eye contact with a robot can be a very strange experience. Scientists even have a name for the feeling: the “mysterious valley”. Now, researchers at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Italy have found that it is more than just a feeling. They ran an experiment that showed how a robot’s gaze (凝视) can trick people into thinking they are socially interacting with a human being. That experience can slow a person’s ability to make decisions.
“The gaze is an extremely important social signal,” said the lead writer, Professor Agnieszka Wykowska, “The question is whether the robot’ s gaze will cause very similar mechanisms (机制) in the human brain as a human’s gaze would.”
The team asked 40 participants to play a video game of “chicken”. Each player had to decide whether to permit a car to run straight toward another car or to turn to avoid a crash. The people played against a human-like robot sitting across from them. During breaks in the game, players had to look at the robot. Sometimes the robot would look back and at other times it would look away. As the interactions happened, the scientists collected data on participants’ behavior and brain activity.
“Our results show the gaze of the robot had an impact on the way humans made decisions and humans’ responses, so humans were much slower in making decisions in the game,” Wykowska said. Given that the robot is designed to copy the shape and appearance of people, it’s not altogether surprising perhaps that its gaze can influence people’s attention.
The findings could be useful for deciding where and how human-like robots might be placed. “When we understand when and how robots change people’s social behavior, then we can decide in which sort of context (环境) this is desirable and beneficial for humans and in which context something should not occur,” Wykowska said.
8. What did the robots do when participants looked at them during breaks
A. They sat among the participants for a while. B. They made eye contact with the participants.
C. They greeted the participants in a polite way. D. They had a chat with the participants.
9. What is the key point of the study according to Wykowska
A. How humans can control robots.
B. How robots react to human’s gaze.
C. Whether robots and humans can think the same way.
D. Whether robots’ gaze can have the same impact as humans’.
10. How should the player deal with the car in the game
A. Whether it should keep away from another car. B. When it should be filled up with gas.
C. What speed it should run at. D. Where it should be parked.
11. What do the findings intend to state
A. The working principle of human-like robots. B. The application strategy of human-like robots.
C The perfection of human-like robots’ actions. D. The improvement of human-like robots’ assessment.

When Linda was very young, she loved writing poems and dreamed about being a poet. But her dream didn’t come true. After her father died in her teens, life kept throwing new responsibilities at Linda. She had to look after her younger brothers and sisters. Then came kids after her getting married, and then the kids’ kids. She spent most of her life taking care of her family. And in her closet, Linda locked all her poems, her talent, and also her dream of reading her poems on stage.
One Sunday, Linda was joyfully cooking in the kitchen because her children and grandchildren were going to visit her. Although doctors told her not to take stress, she spent five hours preparing nice food for them! After lunch that day, Linda sat with her 10-year-old grandson, Mark. And she said, “Honey, can you fetch me the family album from my closet Let’s take a look together.”
While searching for the album, Mark discovered many pieces of paper there. He came running and said, “Grandma! Are these yours Do you write poems ” Linda replied, “Oh, I did it in the past. I wanted to read them on stage one day, but I never had the opportunity. You see, I have two wonderful sons and many lovely grandchildren. I got busy in the past. Anyway, forget about that.”
But Mark didn’t. Days later, his school announced that there would be a talent show and that kids’ grandparents could also participate in it. Mark immediately signed his grandma up for the show. When visiting his grandma again, Mark told her the news and said, “Grandma, you can finally stand on stage and read your poems!” Linda said in tears, “I'm too old! I will get nervous.” But Mark believed that his grandma would be the best poet. With his encouragement, Linda agreed and decided to read a humorous poem written by herself.
Mark’s support didn’t end up there. He told Linda’s story to Joseph, the father of one of his classmates, who worked as an editor for a local newspaper. And he asked whether Joseph could publish his grandma’s old poems and invite her to write new ones for the newspaper. Joseph smiled, “Well, if your grandma’s poems in the talent show prove good, I’ll talk about it with her.”

【答案】
Linda was expecting the upcoming show. Nervous yet excited, she practiced her poem every day, supported by Mark’s constant encouragement. When the day of the talent show arrived, Linda stepped onto the stage, her hands trembling slightly. However, as she began to recite her humorous poem, she relaxed and the audience erupted in laughter and applause. Proud of her accomplishment, Linda felt a sense of fulfillment she had long thought impossible to achieve.
Joseph was deeply impressed with Linda’s poem. After the show, he approached Linda and praised her talent. Seeing the audience’s enthusiastic response, he offered to publish her old poems in the newspaper and invited her to write a regular poetry column. Overwhelmed with joy, Linda accepted the offer, realizing that it was never too late to pursue her dreams. With her family’s support, she eagerly began her new journey as a poet, proving to herself and others that age is just a number when it comes to fulfilling one’s dreams.
