Han Kang, the South Korean author best known for her novel, “The Vegetarian,” was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday — the first writer from her country to receive the award.
Han, 53, was born in 1970 in Gwangju, South Korea. Her father was also a novelist, but much less successful. The family struggled financially and moved frequently. In a 2016 interview with The Times, Han said her poor childhood “was too much for a little child, but I was all right because I was surrounded by books.”
When Han was 9, her family moved to Seoul just months before the Gwangju uprising (起义), when government troops fired on crowds of protesters, killing hundreds. The event shaped her views on humanity’s capacity for violence, Han said in the 2016 interview.
Han studied literature at Yonsei University in Korea, and her first published works were poems. Her debut novel (首部小说), “Black Deer,” which came out in 1998, was a mystery about a missing woman. In the 2016 interview, Han said it was around that time that she developed the idea for a short story about a woman who becomes a plant, which she eventually developed into “The Vegetarian.”
Following her debut, Han went on to write seven more novels, as well as collections of essays and short stories. Among her other novels are “The White Book,” which was also nominated for the International Booker Prize, and “Greek Lessons,” published in English in2023.
Han’s writing is now celebrated in South Korea, but that took some time, she said, and some of her books were initially greeted with bafflement. “The Vegetarian” was received as “very extreme and unusual,” Han said.

“Who are you ” asked two men to a third person who had just interrupted their conversation onstage. “I am a national treasure,” he replied with pride and a smile. “A ‘national treasure’ You are...Meng Lan, or Huahua ” they responded uncertainly.
That drew a sound of laughing from the audience, for Meng Lan and Huahua are two famous giant pandas, whose photos and videos have become an internet hit.
The dialogue was even funnier because it was inserted(插入) into a play about ancient history titled Joyful Songs in Flourishing Age, recently presented at the National Museum of China. The play’s creators said they added in bits of contemporary culture to make it lively and more relatable to today’s audiences. The primary inspiration for the performance also was a figure of fun — an ancient pottery (陶器) statue of a comedian beating a drum. The 56-centimeter-tall statue is characterized by his wide smile and a lively position — he holds a flat drum with one arm and a drumstick in the opposite hand, and he raises a leg in a noticeable movement.
The museum’s purpose in hosting the play was to cooperate with other cultural and educational institutions to bring old cultural objects to life. The show was meant to help more people learn not only about the clay figure itself, but also about ancient Chinese art and culture. “The music and many other kinds of Baixi performing arts have been put into the plot.”
Yang, a professor at the Communication University of China, says producing the play inspired great creativity among her cooperators and the production was an exploratory effort of the museum to bring about the various presentation of their collections. While they asked for help from researchers at the National Museum of China for historical details, they also added elements of imagination and, especially, pop culture, such as rap and the giant panda craze, to enrich the dialogue and singing and to help people relate to the show.
25.What does “a national treasure” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A.A pottery statue. B.An Internet video. C.A panda. D.A performance.
26.Why was the dialogue put into the play
A.To attract younger audiences. B.To make a deeper conversation.
C.To conduct a simpler discussion. D.To achieve a better understanding.
27.What does Professor Yang think of the show
A.It gets a museum famous again. B.It is a popular talent play.
C.It results from a creative exploration. D.It is short of imaginative ideas.
28.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.Ancient History Enters University Courses
B.Cultural Objects Carry Various Musical Elements

The first formal count of polar bears in waters between the United States and Russia indicates they’re doing better than some of their cousins elsewhere.
Polar bears are listed as a threatened species because of reduced sea ice due to climate change. But university and federal researchers estimate a healthy population of nearly 3,000 animals in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska’s northwest coast, according to a study published in Scientific Reports.
“In the short term, it's absolutely good news,” said lead author Eric Regehr. In the long term, it doesn’t mean the Chukchi Sea bear population will not be affected. “Polar bears need ice to hunt seals, and the ice is likely to decline until the problem of climate change is addressed,” Regehr said. “Polar bears spend most of their lives on sea ice. Less sea ice means less productive time to hunt ice seals, more time on shore and longer swims.”
The study shows there is variation around the world in the effects of sea ice loss on polar bears. “Some subpopulations are already declining while others are still doing OK,” Regehr said.
Fewer cubs (幼熊) were surviving into their second year and adult males weighed less and had smaller skulls (头骨). Researcher Steven Amstrup said the trends were consistent with changes in nutritional status likely associated with declines in Sea ice.
A more recent study by researcher Karyn Rode found that Chukchi bears spend more time on shore and have almost 30 fewer days to hunt seals on ice than 20 years ago. However, that doesn’t appear to have affected the population. Polar bears have an amazing ability to build fat reserves, and the Chukchi’s copious seal population apparently allows bears to compensate for the loss of hunting time.
29.What news is reported at the beginning of the text
A.Polar bears are severely affected by sea ice loss.
B.Polar bears have been listed as a threatened species.
C.A large polar bear population has been found in the Chukchi Sea.
D.The melting of Arctic sea ice may lead to severe climate change.
30.What might Regehr think of the Chukchi bears
A.They might be found in other areas.
B.They might be endangered in the near future.
C.They might help scientists fight climate change.
D.They might decrease in numbers in the distant future.
31.Which of the following is the effect of sea ice loss on polar bears
A.They have to stay in water.
B.They have to live in groups.
C.They are becoming lazier than before.
D.They are suffering from changes in their nutrition.
32.What does the underlined word “copious” in the last paragraph mean
A.Decreasing. B.Plentiful. C.Diverse. D.Adult.

Poems for high schoolersIf
The poem is written by Rudyard Kipling. In this poem, a father talks of several values and advises his son to live with moderation and constraint (克制) to continuously maintain calm and avoid overreacting. The poem is full of positivity for personal growth in difficult times. Anyone struggling with a lack of desire in life can still benefit from it.The Laughing Heart

The Laughing Heart, which focuses on risk and making decisions in life, is attractive to youth as it serves as an encouragement to them to stand up for themselves in difficult times.Fifth Grade Autobiography
Through the poem, Rita Dove discusses the good memories of her most significant life influences as a child. By using language and pictures, she recalls how great and significant her family is as she looks at a photograph. Based on Dove’s poetry, an excellent activity would be to ask children to select a photo that’s significant to them and write their own Fifth Grade Autobiography. The Rose That Grew From Concrete
The poem is about achieving our life goals despite the challenges we experience along the road. In this poem, Tupac Shakur compares himself to a neglected rose who went from being a marginalized (被边缘化的) teenager to one of the most influential singers the world has ever known. 第二节七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,共12.5分)
It’s safe to say that with the many stressors that make up our day-to-day lives, we could all use a little more light and a little more calm. Enter “saving the day” — a mood-boosting idea. 36 You just need to find some peace amidst the chaos. If you spend the whole day working, you can do one thing that reclaims the day as your own.
Saving the day can be any activity and doesn’t have to be time-consuming. By doing something that you love, you’re not only making the day have some space of your own but also improving your mood. Similarly, it can help you cope with stress and nurture your well-being. 37 As therapists put it, “saving the day” has serious mental health benefits.
38 Bad days will exist whether or not you “save the day”. But if you do something that adds some relief and clarity and joy to your day, it can not only make the day a little better but help you connect with yourself, too. “Could I end the day on the note that’s like, ‘Oh, well, it wasn’t a good day, but I took care of myself ’” said Danica Harris, a somatic therapist, “This idea improves trust and safety with the self. ”
Saving the day can help prepare you for hard times, too. 39 And since life isn’t easy, such days will inevitably happen. If you have a bad day but do two things to “save the day”, you may go to bed feeling like it wasn’t a great day. But you’ll also know that you did everything you could to make it OK. By contrast, if you are going to bed and you’ve done nothing for yourself, you could feel like it was a bad day. The lack of self-care can lead to self-criticism and a sense of failure. 40
In conclusion, saving the day is a powerful tool for managing stress and enhancing mental health. It’s a reminder that even on the most challenging days, there’s always something you can do to make a positive impact on your well-being.
A.This concept is simple.
B.It seems like a groundbreaking concept.
C.It can also help you find a sense of fulfillment.
D.Saving the day allows you to establish trust in yourself.
E.Saving the day can be of great benefit to physical and mental health.
F.Remember that taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity.
G.In other words, it can help you become more ready to handle future bad days.

In a small village in the Philippines, there lived a family of five. The parents, Juan and Maria, had three children: two boys and a girl. They lived in a small house made of bamboo, surrounded by many trees and the sound of the nearby river.
Juan and Maria lived a happy life with their three children: Miguel, Jose and Ana. The eldest son, Miguel, was a hardworking young man who helped his father with the farm work. He was responsible and always took care of his younger brother and sister. The couple always told their children that they were happy as long as the family was together. Though Jose and Ana were too young to understand that, Miguel, who treasured a photo of his family, bore that in mind.
One day, while the family was having dinner, they heard a loud knock on the door. It was the village chief, who had come to deliver some bad news: The village was in danger of being flooded due to heavy rain, and they needed to evacuate (撤离) immediately.
Juan and Maria quickly gathered their children and some essentials, and they set off towards the evacuation center. Before leaving for the center, Miguel took the precious family photo in a hurry. The journey was long and full of danger, with the rain pouring down heavily and the wind beating them violently. The children were scared and tired, but Juan and Maria held their hands to reassure them, telling them that everything was going to be alright.
When they finally reached the evacuation center, they were greeted by other families who had also been forced to leave their homes. The center was crowded and uncomfortable, but the family was grateful to have a roof over their heads and some food to eat.
Days turned into weeks, and Juan and Maria grew restless. They missed their home and their farm, and they were worried about what would happen to their crops. Several weeks later, the day came when the floodwaters slowly receded (消退).

67.The Low-carbon Lifestyle Around Me
“Low-carbon lifestyle ” is a concept aiming to lower the carbon dioxide emission in living as much as possible. At present, this lifestyle is being accepted in my family.
My father used to drive his car to and from work, but things were different in the last spring Festival, during which he had enough time to experience the low-carbon lifestyle. We visited our relatives and friends by bicycle during the festival, which is good to our health and for the environment. Besides, I remember to turn off the light when I leave my room. I often use things that can be recycled. For example, I use both sides of the paper.
I think it’s our duty to live a low-carbon life. Let’s put it into action as soon as possible.
