It all started this morning when Arty arrived at school a little late. When he finally walked into the classroom, he wasn’t smiling as usual. He just slipped into his chair quietly and put his head down. I could tell something was different but I wasn’t sure what.
As soon as the bell rang for break, I asked, “Hey, Arty, are you OK ” He sighed and shook his head, saying, “It’s just been one of those mornings, Harold. Everything’s gone wrong.” Arty told me how his alarm didn’t go off, so he woke up late. Then, he spilt his breakfast all over his school uniform and had to change, which made him even later. To top it all off, he forgot to do his homework, and by the time he got to school, he felt like the whole day was ruined.
I’m glad I asked Arty if he was OK. I listened carefully and then said, “Arty, we all have tough mornings sometimes, but it doesn’t mean the rest of your day has to be bad. Let’s make the most of the break and see if we can turn things around.” And you know what We did. We played handball, shared some laughs, and by lunchtime, Arty was back to his cheerful self, telling funny stories like he always does.
R U OK Day on September 12 is all about checking in with your family and friends and learning how you can talk to them if you think they might be worried, stressed, upset, or just not feeling themselves. The theme for 2024 is Ask RU OK Any Day. That means that we shouldn’t just wait for one day of the year to check in, but we can and should ask R U OK any day.
So, remember, even if your day starts off rough like Arthur’s, it doesn’t have to stay that way. There’s always time to turn things around, especially when you’ve got good friends by your side.
4. What made Harold feel different this morning
A. Arty was late as usual. B. Arty came to school last.
C. Arty was acting strangely. D. Arty forgot to turn off the alarm.
5. What did Arty think was the worst thing this morning
A. He woke up late. B. He dirtied his uniform.
C. He messed up breakfast. D. He failed to do homework.
6. What can we infer about Harold’s “R U OK ” from the third paragraph
A. It works well on Arty. B. It has become a holiday.
C. It leads to care and love. D. It happens during breaks.
7. What can be the best title of this text
A. Bad Things Always Turn Around B. Make R U OK an Any Day Question
C. Make R U OK Day Known to People D. Keep an Eye on Family and Friends
C
Have you ever worried about how people feel about you after hanging out with them for the first time If you have, you are not the only one. It turns out that, after meeting someone new, most people like the other person more than they think the other person likes them back. It seems that when we meet new people, we suffer from an illusion called the liking gap: We imagine that others like us less than we like them back, even though this is often not the case.
The first study that discovered the liking gap was done with adults. Researchers invited college students to come to a research laboratory where they chatted with another person they did not know. Afterwards, they were asked separately how much they liked this other person and how much they thought the other person liked them back.
The researchers found that most students said they liked the other person, but thought the other person liked them less. The length of the conversation did not matter. Even more surprising was that the liking gap stuck around for a while even after the people got to know each other. Even after 6 months, students still experienced a liking gap, and it was only after 9 months that the liking gap no longer existed.
Do researchers also find liking gaps in real life Researchers asked a new group of college students the same questions. The students talked to each other, but this time, they did not know they were part of a study. They were told they were taking part in a workshop on how to talk to strangers better. Even in this situation, students thought that the person they were talking to liked them less than they liked them back. Finally, the liking gap is not just a trick the mind plays on us when we are talking to one person. Another study showed that the liking gap still exists even in a group.
8. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “illusion” in paragraph 1
A. A false feeling. B. A serious disease.
C. A terrible memory. D. A severe loneliness.
9. What does the second paragraph focus on
A. How the study was done. B. What the study found.
C. Why liking gap appears. D. Who took part in the study.
10. What can we learn about liking gap from paragraph 3
A. It makes a talk difficult. B. It improves relationships.
C. It may last for a long time. D. It is common among adults.
11. What might be talked about following the text
A. The causes of liking gap. B. The liking gap in groups.
C. Ways to handle liking gap. D. Tricks the mind plays on us.

Kids and science seem to be made for each other!
The basic science is a combination of thought and experiment called the scientific method. It’s where you start with an idea, create a way to prove or disprove your idea, and show what you learned based on facts. Learning to follow this process helps you think logically (逻辑地) and carefully. These important thinking skills can be used in many areas of study. To give a child practice with these thinking skills is like giving vitamins (维生素) to a developing mind.
One of the greatest things we can teach our children is to love learning. Learning science is a great way to do so. Children are easy to be interested in science. Because much of science is hands on, it attracts most children. Nothing makes a child sit up and take notice like the “WOW!” of a great science showing.
Science opens doors to many subjects at school. Building love for science can be helpful in other areas of study. For example, one cannot love science for very long without becoming good at its language — math! So science encourages children to study math. An interest in science is an interest in how things were once understood compared to how they are understood now. Thus studying science lends itself easily to studying history. And after you do an experiment, you need to write a lab report. Therefore, writing becomes an important part of science.
Science is the basic thing for much of our life. The science of farming shows how our food is produced; biomedical science keeps us healthy; even our beds these days are designed according to scientific facts. We almost eat, sleep and breathe with the help of science! When we prepare the next generation (一代) of voters, creators, and policy makers, it is important to make sure they are not only comfortable but also good at science.
12. According to Paragraph 2, what does learning the scientific method mean to kids
A. Refusing any ideas that are not logical. B. Helping them develop thinking skills.
C. Learning many areas of study. D. Learning to do experiments.
13. Which of the following statements would the author agree with
A. Science is too difficult for children. B. Children usually consider science boring.
C. Science could make children love learning. D. Children who can’t think carefully shouldn’t learn science.
14. If a child works hard at science at school he/she ________.
A. usually loses interest in other activities B. usually has no time for other subjects
C. is usually bad at such subjects like history D. is likely to learn many other subjects well
15. What is the text mainly about
A. Why science is important. B. Why kids should learn science.
C. What kids should learn at school. D. How kids can make use of science.

I had wanted to run a marathon for more than twenty years. In 1983, I graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Exercise Physiology (运动生理学) and went to work for a cardiac rehabilitation clinic. Unfortunately,I developed a bad habit of drinking. Ironically (讽刺的是), I gave patients suggestions on the importance of taking care of one’s health by day, while I myself drank every night. For the next several years, every patient I met naturally thought that I was the picture of health and a marathoner. After all, haven’t all exercise physiologists completed at least one
When I finally gave up the bad habit of drinking, I had no excuses or limitations. I made up my mind to go for it. Over six months, I went for a long run (between 15 and 25 miles) every Saturday morning. On weekdays, I went for shorter hill climbs and weight training.
One Saturday morning, as I approached the final part of my run, out of nowhere a pothole suddenly appeared, dropping me to the ground. I heard a “pop” from my left knee. In a second, six months of training went up in smoke after I broke my knee.
The thought of missing the marathon in five days concerned me far more than my physical injury. I had not just given the marathon a small place in my life; it had become my life. Now my dream was gone.
The good news was that after a complete examination, nothing appeared to be a life-long damage. The doctor told me that as soon as the swelling went down, I could do whatever I felt I could stand.
Though I had to miss this big marathon, I could take part in the Long Beach Marathon, a smaller one next month. It was only three and a half weeks away. I managed to go on working out to keep my fitness without affecting my left knee. The swelling in my knee went down at last. After about two and a half weeks, I asked the doctor’s permission to start running again. He gave it.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After finishing a few miles, I returned to my office with new confidence.

【答案】范文
After finishing a few miles, I returned to my office with new confidence. Again, I had the hope of being able to finish my first marathon. In the first week, I was back up to 10 miles. The Long Beach Marathon was now only days away. At a time when I should have been reducing my training, I was training more. Trainers recommend runners to run at least 20 miles or more before the race. Fortunately, I had already completed mine, so I was confident that my marathon will be completed successfully.
By the time race day arrived, I was fit and ready to run the race. I completed the race in just under four hours, running the first 18 miles faster than I had ever run before. As I crossed the finish line, the loudspeakers announced my name and hometown to the crowd of cheering audience. I immediately broke down in tears. I could finally relax; I had completed the Long Beach Marathon. Over the next few years, I completed three more marathons. The power to overcome great difficulties to achieve goals made me do everything better in life.
