The Zhongyuan Festival, also known as Ullambana Festival among Buddhists( 佛教徒), falls on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, on Aug 12 this year.
Since ancient times, the Chinese have believed that the gates of hell open on that day and so people hold many activities to honor the ghosts. Therefore, the festival is also called the Ghost Festival.
There are two other festivals in China to honor gone family members: Qingming Festival and the Double Ninth Festival. In both, living young people pay respect to their dead ancestors. Zhongyuan Festival is different from these, because the dead are believed to visit the living.
Buddhists believe that by offering things on that day, dead parents and relatives can be saved from bad situations in the after life. The Ullambana Festival of Buddhism has two meanings. One is to ask people to provide for Buddhist monks(僧侣). The other is to encourage people to do more good deeds to release gone family members from fault and support family love and care.
The Ullambana Festival is related to the legend of Mulian Saves His Mother.

Under the instruction, Mulian filled the Ullambana bowl with fruits and vegetarian food to his mother on July 15. His hungry mother finally got the food.To show his thanks to the Buddha, Mulian held a giving activity every year to release the hungry ghosts from the disaster of being hanged by their feet.

The Romans lived in Britain between 43AD and 410AD 65 their influence is still felt today and not just in physical ruins. The Romans left us 66 , including some common English words.
During the Roman Empire, Latin, an ancient language, was 67 in many parts of Britain. Although the Romans wrote in traditional Latin, they have conversations in impolite Latin---spoken, everyday language that was used between soldiers and in business. Because of business, words that are kept often relate to food and drink, such as “wine”, which came from the Latin"vinum". Others relate to houses such as “kitchen”, came from the verb “cook”, and “wall”, which at first meant a stake or post outside a fort.
Settlements and roads in Roman times were large. The word “street”, used generally and being used for specific names of streets, at first came from “strata” which meant paved road. On a 68 note, research from the field of language shows many well-known place names in the UK have their Latin start. 69 , the Romans used “castrum”to refer to a city, which developed into the common place ending---chester, ---caster or--- cester. Consider Manchester. It is an earlier Roman fort which was known as Mamuciam. Other places with Roman start include Lancaster and Leicester.
A strong influence on English which came from the Romans is the use of the Roman letters. Manuscripts of Old English texts have shown a form unalike 70 English today. Differences include some letters, such as two symbols called“ash”and “eth”. Nowadays you are more likely to see these symbols in a guide to pronunciation.
So, even though 1,600 years have passed, the Romans live on.

In my grandfather’s house stood a big clock. Meals in that dining room were a time for three generations. The table was always spread with delicious food. And that clock stood like an old family friend, watching over the laughter and stories.
As a child, the old clock attracted me. I watched and listened to it during meals, amazed at how at different times, that clock would ring three times, six times or more. Year after year, the clock chimed, a part of my memories and my heart.
Even more wonderful to me was my grandfather’s regular practice. He would wind that clock with a special key each day. That key was magic to me. It kept the clock ticking and chiming. I remember watching my grandfather take the key and open the hidden door in the old clock. He put the key into the clock and wound. He never let that clock wind down and stop. When we grandkids got a little older, he showed us how to open the door and let us each take a turn winding the key.
After my beloved grandfather died, it was several days after the funeral before I remembered the clock! The tears flowed freely when I entered the dining room. The clock stood there but seemed smaller. It was not so attractive without my grandfather’s touch.
Years later, my grandmother gave me the clock and the key. The old house was quiet, no laughter over the dinner table, no ticking of the clock. The hands on the clock were frozen, stopped at the moment when my grandfather had stopped winding it. I took the key and opened the clock door. All of a sudden, I was a child again, watching my grandfather with his silver-white hair and twinkling blue eyes. He was there, winking at me, at the secret of the clock’s magic, at the key that held so much power. Then I slowly inserted the key and wound the clock. It sprang to life. Tick- tock, tick-tock, life and chimes were breathed into the dining room, into the house and into my heart. In the movement of the hands of the clock, my grandfather lived again.

Star-worshiping
Star-worshiping is becoming a kind of fashion, especially among teenagers. Many people regard it as a waste of time. But I hold a different idea that star-worshiping can bring us something positive.
Teenagers may just admire their idols for their handsome or beautiful appearances. But more attention should be paid to how hard-working they were in their road to success. Everyone tries his or her best to "Build a Rome", however, Rome wasn't built in a day. Most of them will just give up when they have some setbacks, few will choose to fight on and fewer can make it to the top.
In general, when we are frustrated, we can follow our idols' examples to fight with those difficulties. We'd better make our hearts full of courage instead of fear.
