On 1 August, 2023, a new rule went into effect in the United States. It bans the sale of most incandescent (白炽的) light bulbs in the country. What, you may wonder, is the problem with those light bulbs
Incandescent light bulbs are in fact the most commonly used ones. They create light by heating a metal wire. These older-style light bulbs have been in use since the late 1800s, but they’re not great lights. Over 90 percent of the electricity (电) used by the bulbs goes into making heat rather than light.
Since 2005, countries around the world have started to ban incandescent bulbs. They’ve also encouraged people to switch to newer styles of bulbs because they use far less power.
According to the new law, light bulbs on the U. S. market must meet a certain standard. It must be able to create 45 or more lumens (流明) with 1 watt (瓦) . The higher the lumens, the brighter the bulb is. Most incandescent bulbs can only create about 15 lumens with 1 watt, so they don’t meet the new standard.
Currently, the best replacements (替代品) for incandescent bulbs are LED lights. An LED bulb can create about 75 lumens with 1 watt of electricity. And they can last 25 or more times longer than incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs can also be made to give off many different colours of light
In fact, many Americans were already aware of LED lights’ advantages and started using them. Now the new rule will further promote their usage. The U. S. Department of Energy says it will save Americans about $ 3 billion every year.
Besides, over the next 30 years, LED bulbs are expected to help prevent a huge amount of pollution in the U. S. That will be an important step in dealing with global warming.
Not everyone is happy about the new rue, though. Some people believe the government shouldn’t be telling people what kind of light bulbs they can buy.
56. When did these older-style light bulbs come into use according to the passage
A. On 1 August, 2023. B. Since the late 1800s.
C. Since 2005. D. Over the next 30 years.
57. The underlined word “promote” in paragraph 6 means ____________.
A. push for B. ask for C. look for D. care for
58. What can we learn from the passage
A. All Americans are happy about the new rule to use the LED bulbs.
B. The LED bulbs not only have a long life, but also save money.
C. Most incandescent bulbs can meet the new standard.
D. The lower the lumens, the brighter the bulb is.
59. The underlined word “that” in the reading refers to ____________.
A. LED bulbs B. pollution C. to help stop pollution D. the new rule
60. The best title of this passage may be ____________.
A. LED Bulbs—the best B. A new rule dealing with global warming
C. What kind of light bulbs we should use D. Making the change to LED light bulbs
