When Ariel Rojas rode her bike to Bay Wildlife Reserve in Queens, New York, last November, she planned to go hiking and bird-watching. A mile into her walk, she suddenly spotted a beautiful swan struggling near the water’s edge. Ariel, 30, who had worked at the Wild Bird Recovery Center in Manhattan knew that swans were likely to view her as a predator and attack her but as she approached this one, it didn’t move.
She was certain that the bird needed medical attention, so she covered her jacket over the bird’s head to keep it calm, gently picked it up but then a thought struck her: What should I do next The nearest Wild Bird Recovery Center was across the East River and clear on the other side of town. How was she going to carry a 17-pound swan on her bike all that way Luckily, some strangers driving by offered her, her bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station. On the subway, no one seemed to be particularly bothered by the feathered passenger. “One guy,” said Ariel, “was sitting right in front of me on his phone. I don’t know if he even noticed there was a swan in front of him.”
Rojas called the center on the way, and Tristan Higgin, an animal-care manager, picked her up at the subway station and drove bird, bike, and Rojas to the facility. There, staff members determined that the swan might have heavy metal poisoning, caused by taking in weights used on fishing lines. The staff got the swan back up on her feet, She even made friends at the center—another injured swan. Sadly, even with all that loving care, the swan didn’t pick up. Two months after Rojas came to her aid, she passed away. It’s a disappointing ending, but the real story is just how far some people are willing to go to save a swan in the big city. In all, Rojas traveled two hours by foot, car, and subway while dragging her bike.

A. A potential volunteer, B. A likely audience. C. A potential killer. D. A likely helper.

6. Which of the following can best describe Rojas
A. Kind-hearted and imaginative. B. Caring and helpful.
C. Strong-minded and energetic. D. Positive and creative. i
7. What may be the best title of the passage

After waking up, you may feel frustrated that you cannot recall the dreams you had last night. Artificial intelligence (AI) may be able to help.
Previously, there have been AI models that can turn text into images. They can do this by learning from a large amount of data from both tests and images. This time, researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AIsystem called Stable Diffusion to re-create images based on people’s brain scans, reported Science magazine.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, US which consisted of brain scans from four participants as they each viewed a set of 10,000 photos The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI功能性磁共振成像).
The AI then learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the fMRI data — when a part of the brain is activated, more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain activities with the photos. Through this method, AI learned how human brains would react when seeing different photos.
Finally, the researchers tested the Al on additional brain scans from the same participants when they viewed photos of a toy bear, airplane, clock and train. If the person looked at an airplane, for example, the Al would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text-to-image” model and make the image clearer by feeding itself the keyword “airplane”, The final images were “convincing” with about 80 percent of accuracy, according to the researchers.
The new study created a novel approach that incorporates texts and images to “decipher (解码) the brain”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, US, told Science magazine. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined thoughts and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals perceive reality.
8. What do we know about Stable Diffusion
A. It can help train people’s minds.
B. It can fully present people’s dreams.
C. It was created to draw people’s brains.
D. It can produce pictures from people’s thoughts.
9. How did the Al system learn about human brain activity
A. By recording brain scans from participants.
B. By analyzing descriptions of human thoughts
C. By studying patterns of blood flow in the brain.
D. By examining 10,000 photos about human brains.
10. What does the underlined word “blurry” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Unclear. B. Striking. C. Factual. D. Unusual.
11. What is the potential use of this technology according to scientists
A. To help understand our dreams. B. To improve text-to-image models.
C. To create more accurate brain scans. D. To learn how animals view the world.
D
With digital learning gaining popularity, some students choose to learn from home using computers and the internet. They used websites and digital books instead of paper ones. But are they learning as well as they think
Studies show that reading on paper is easier to understand than reading on a screen. Anne Mangen, a literacy professor at the University of Stavanger in Norway, says reading on paper is calm and attracts our attention, unlike the reading on a screen.
Experts say that while screens are good for quick news, complex texts are better on paper. They help us remember details better. A study by Lauren Singer Trakhman found that students understood the main ideas whether they read on paper or a screen, but they missed small details on screens. Reading on screens might make us read faster but not as deeply. Our brains might be getting used to quick information from digital media and not thinking carefully about what we read.
Some research shows that our brains react differently to paper and screens. Reading on paper can make us feel more and understand the space around us better.
So what can we do We shouldn't stop using screens, but we should think about what we read on them. Singer Trakhman says she uses her Kindle for fun but turns to paper for serious reading. To remember what we read on screens, we can try writing down the main points by hand. It might help us remember better than typing. And sometimes, turning off our devices and reading a real book can be very nice.
12. What does Anne Mangen think of reading on paper
A. It is better for reading quick news. B. It brings peaceful reading experience.
C. It provides a new adventure for readers. D. It helps to improve communication abilities.
13. Why might students miss details when reading on screens
A. Screens make the text harder to read.
B. The text on screens is usually less detailed.
C. Students tend to read quickly and not think deeply.
D. Screens make it difficult to understand the main ideas.
14 What can be inferred from Lauren Singer Trakhman's reading habits
A She hardly uses screens in daily reading.
B. She likes using Kindle for all types of reading.
C. She thinks Kindles are suitable for serious reading.
D. She prefers to use paper for challenging literature.
15. Which is the best title for this passage
A. The Advantages Digital Learning Brings B. Reading on Paper vs. Reading on Screens
C. How Reading on Paper Shapes Students D. The Importance of Online Learning at Home

Angry and sad, Tom went to his grandfather and told him the whole story with tears. “Mike is really a bad boy. I won’t want to see him again,” he threw these wards. “I hate him very much. I promise that if I treated him as my friend again, I would be a dog.”
Grandfather clapped him on the head and comforted him in a gentle voice, “Honey, I can feel your sorrow in my heart, but please allow me to tell you a story of mine. When I was a young boy like you, I always hated others, too. But as I grow older, I have realized the fact that hate itself can only make you tired. It doesn’t hurt your enemy but only hurt yourself.”
As the boy listened carefully, the grandfather went on, “Dear Tom, can you guess there are always two tigers in my heart They are quite different. One is good and kind, who always makes me get on well with everything around. But the other is bad and unfriendly, who is full of anger. Even the smallest thing will lead to his anger and bad temper. He tends to fight with everyone without any reason. He has no ability to think carefully, because he always fills himself with hate. It is difficult for me to live with these two tigers inside my heart and they both try to control me.”
The boy looked into his grandfather’s eyes curiously and asked, “Which tiger on earth always controls you, grandfather The former or the latter ”
The old man answered slowly in a serious voice, “The one that I feed. I always choose to feed the good and kind tiger but try to starve the bad and unfriendly one to death. So as you can see, I never hate others and I have many friends now.”

【答案】范文一:
Dear Jim.
I understand quite well what you’re going through. It’s not unusual for us teenagers to have difficulty getting along well with parents.
Take it easy! But remember it’s significant to learn to control your anger. After all, those who easily get irritated are less likely to become a good listener and communicator. Thus, when your parents criticize your weekend arrangements, don’t explode but explain tenderly and patiently. Besides, don’t forget to tell them how much you love them.
Hope you’ll find these suggestions helpful.
