The Mona Lisa is Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of a woman. This week, the painting gave away a secret. Scientists used X-rays to scrutinize a small part of the more than 500-year-old painting. The researchers discovered a method Leonardo used in the work. They discovered an oil paint used for the Mona Lisa was a special, new paint mixture.
The research suggests that the Italian artist may have been in an experimental state when he set to work on the painting early in the 16th century
“He was someone who loved to experiment and each of his paintings is completely different,” said Victor Gonzalez, the study’s lead writer. “In this case, it’s interesting to see that indeed there is a special method for the ground coat of the Mona Lisa,” he said.
The researchers found a mixture in Leonardo’s first coat of paint. The discovery proved that da Vinci most likely used lead oxide (铅氧化物) to thicken and help dry his paint.
The scientists looked into its structure (结构). The machine works at close to the speed of light, allowing researchers to look deeper into the paint structure.
Dutch artist Rembrandt may have used a similar mixture when he was painting in the 17th century. Gonzalez and other researchers have found the same material in his work, too.
Leonardo is thought to have used lead oxide, which has an orange color. “What you will get is an oil that has a very nice golden color,” Gonzalez said. “It flows more like honey (蜜).”
But the Mona Lisa—said by the Louvre to be a picture of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a silk businessman—and other works by Leonardo still have other secrets to tell. “There are plenty, plenty more things to discover,” Conzalez said.
8. What does the underlined word “scrutinize” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Create. B. Improve. C. Remove. D. Examine.
9. What does Victor Gonzalez think of da Vinci’s method of creation
A. It is traditional. B. It is common.
C. It is simple. D. It is pioneering.
10. Why did da Vinci use the mixture to create his painting
A. To improve the paint. B. To prevent the paint from drying.
C. To make the painting colorful. D. To keep the painting in good condition.
11. What can we learn about the Mona Lisa from the last paragraph
A. It needs further research. B. It was painted with special oils.
C. Many secrets are to be covered by it. D. Action will be taken to protect it.
D
A team of scientists is studying the sound of the forest in Ecuador, a country in South America, to learn how artificial intelligence (AI) could follow animal life in recovering environments.
Jorg Muller is a field expert on birds in Germany. He turned to bioacoustics (生物声学), which uses sound to learn more about animal life and the environments in which they live. The tool has been used by scientists for some time. But more recently, researchers are using it with computer learning to study large amounts of data (资料) more quickly.
Muller and his team recorded wildlife sounds at sites in Ecuador’s Choco area. The environments they recorded included areas that were once used for agriculture and old-growth forests. They first had experts listen to the recordings and tell the sounds of different animals. Then, they examined the sound quality to measure the environment. Finally, they ran two weeks of recordings through an AI computer program trained to understand 75 different bird calls.
The program was able to pick out the calls on which it was trained. However, scientists wondered if the program could correctly identify (识别) the number of different kinds of plants and animals in each environment.
Though the AI program could only identify one-fourth of the bird calls that experts could, it was still able to correctly measure biodiversity (生物多样性) levels in each environment.
The study said the scientists’ results show that the AI program is a powerful tool to measure the recovery of animal communities in tropical (热带的) forests.
There are still areas for improvement, including the lack of animal sounds on which to train AI models. And the method can only catch animals that use sound to communicate.
12. What can be learned about bioacoustics
A. It can be used to catch animals. B. It depends on animals’ sounds.
C. It is newly invented by scientists. D. It is popular in researching animals.
13. Which word can best describe the AI program
A. Imperfect. B. Affordable. C. Trouble-making. D. Outdated.
14. What should the researchers do to get better results
A. Improve computer technology. B. Get more information about plants.
C. Collect more animal sounds. D. Enlarge the area of forest for research.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. AI Is a Powerful Tool to Protect Wildlife.
B Researchers Find Wildlife Recover Slowly.
C. Scientists Try Listening to Learn about Wildlife.
D. Computer Trained Can Recognize Animal Sounds.

Valentina Dominguez, a nine-year-old from Plano, Texas, was excited when her “best friend”, Beatrice, traveled 5,880 miles to reunite (重聚) with her. This story makes people feel the kindness of human beings, which fills the whole world with warmth.
Beatrice, Valentina’s “best friend”, is actually an American Girl Doll, who Valentina accidentally left behind on an airplane from Tokyo, Japan. The family did not discover the mistake until they returned home and regretted it very much.
Valentina had been traveling with her parents, Rudy and Celeste, and her doll, Beatrice, back from a vacation in Bali, Indonesia. There, they enjoyed a good trip. The family stopped over in Tokyo and then got on the airplane for home. Along the way, they felt satisfied with the success of their trip. They were still in the pleasure of traveling. The white beach and the huge sea continuously appeared in their minds.
When they arrived in Texas, they searched through their bags, but couldn’t find the doll. That’s when they realized that they hadn’t seen Beatrice since they were on the airplane. Valentina’s family was shocked at losing the doll. Her father explained that, “Beatrice was a big part of our lives for the past three or four years. I am feeling sad because Valentina is very sad.”
The family made a call to the airport and airline, and when they weren’t able to track down Beatrice, they turned to social media.
First Officer James Danen, an American Airline pilot who happened to live only miles from the Dominguez family, saw the post and reached out to Turkish Airlines’ Lost and Found in Tokyo’ s Haneda Airport, where he found the missing doll.
Since Danen’s flight routes (路线) often included Tokyo, he realized that he could help out Valentina. “It’s my nature. I like helping people... I was really glad I could do something nice for somebody,” he explained.

A few days later, Danen was going to fly to Tokyo. He was glad to finally have the chance to help Valentina. He made a careful plan. Before the plane took off, he contacted a friend in Tokyo, asking him to take the doll out and wait for him. Immediately after his flight finished, he met his friend and picked up the doll. He also bought chocolates and other gifts and packed them with the doll. Then, he flew the plane back to the United States.
During a break from work, Danen came to Valentina’s home. When Danen showed up at Valentina’s door and handed her the doll, chocolates and other gifts, Valentina was too joyful to believe her eyes. “Was she well behaved on the flight ” Valentina asked. “Yes. Very well behaved,” Danen answered. Valentina and Beatrice were excited to be united again. “Beatrice means a lot to me,” Valentina shared. “She brings me happiness and she’s my best friend. When she was missing, I felt like my heart was broken.”
