The red-crowned crane (丹顶鹤) is a national first-class protected wildlife. However, due to environmental and ecological damage, the number of red-crowned cranes had been dangerously declining when Zhao Shiwei joined the Zhaoquan River Management Station in1992. Artificial breeding (繁殖) of red-crowned cranes became an important part of Zhao’s work.
3 red-crowned crane birds hatched(孵化) at the station through his artificial program in 1996. But despite tasting success, Zhao and his team encountered hardships the following year. In1997, not a single red-crowned crane bird hatched. And in 1998, only one red-crowned crane chick hatched through artificial breeding, but it died soon after.
In 1999, the station rescued 7 injured red-crowned cranes from the wild, which brought a crucial ray of hope for the program. That drove Zhao and his colleagues to check temperature control devices, go through a huge amount of data, and seek advice from experts, hoping to achieve a breakthrough in artificial breeding. They tried every possible method, even consulting technicians from nearby chicken farms. Finally, the artificial breeding program improved a lot. Later, a record of 85 red-crowned crane birds hatched at the station through a combination of artificial and natural breeding methods. Over the past 30 years, Zhao has always been personally involved in the hatching process. “This part is the most crucial; there cannot be the slightest error,” he said.
Later, Zhao realized that with the number of artificially bred red-crowned cranes increasing, the bond between the cranes and humans was growing stronger. “But they are the spirits of nature and hence should return to nature,” Zhao said. Therefore, Zhao provided outdoor training to artificially bred red-crowned cranes in the reserve in order to increase the number of wild red- crowned cranes. Up to now, Zhao and his team have bred and released more than 200 red-crowned cranes after ensuring they will be able to survive in nature.
24. What does the author imply about the red-crowned cranes in the first two paragraphs
A. They face the danger of extinction.
B. They top all other wildlife in value.
C. Their artificial breeding started in 1992.
D. Their number stopped declining in 1996.
25. What was the turning point in the artificial breeding program
A. Rescuing 7 wild cranes. B. Hiring some wildlife experts.
C. Raising sufficient funds. D. Purchasing advanced devices.
26. Why did Zhao train cranes outdoors
A. To give tourists chances to admire cranes.
B. To improve cranes’ survival skills in the wild.
C. To increase the number of artificially-bred cranes.
D. To strengthen the bond between cranes and humans.
27. What can we learn from Zhao’s work
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Well begun is half done.
C. Continuous efforts pay off. D. Opportunities lie in preparation.

As China’s cities grow, they are also sinking. An estimated 16 percent of the country’s major cities are losing more than 10 millimeters of height per year and nearly half are losing more than 3 millimeters per year, according to a new study published in the journal Science.
“Land subsidence (下沉) is a problem that almost exists everywhere,” said Robert Nicholls, a climate scientist and civil engineer at the University of East Anglia who reviewed the paper, “To my knowledge, this study is the first to measure land subsidence across many urban areas using state-of-the-art radar (雷达) data from satellites. I believe the majority of the adaptation strategies that we have, and the plans to fight climate change, are inaccurate, just because they did not include land subsidence. Land subsidence is an unheeded problem. It hasn’t been studied the way, for example, sea level rise has been studied.”
The new study was based on satellite radar measurements of how much the ground surface in 82 major cities, accounting for three-quarters of the urban population, moved up or down between 2015 and 2022. The researchers compared these measurements to data on potential contributing factors. Subsidence in these cities is caused in part by the pure weight of buildings, the study found. Groundwater extraction (开采) underneath the cities also plays a role, as do oil drilling and coal mining. These activities leave empty space underground where soil and rocks can press together or collapse.
Being below sea level doesn’t mean a city is automatically destroyed. Much of the Netherlands is below sea level and sinking, but the country has been extensively engineered to prevent flooding in places and to accommodate it in others. Shanghai is already limiting groundwater extraction and is sinking more slowly than other cities. In Japan, groundwater management over the years has proved successful. “It’s difficult to stop subsidence entirely,” Dr. Nicholls said, “You’ve got to live with what’s left.”
28. What do the figures in paragraph 1 imply
A. Cities grow at an alarming speed. B. Cities face fierce climate change.
C. Land subsidence is under control. D. Land subsidence is an urgent issue.
29. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “unheeded” in paragraph 2
A. Ignored. B. Identified. C. Undefined. D. Overestimated.
30. What may contribute to land subsidence in cities according to the passage
A. Energy extraction. B. Overuse of farmland.
C. Population expansion. D. Uneven distribution of water.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. City planning calls for joint efforts.
B. Groundwater is to blame for land sinking.
C. Measures can be taken to ease subsidence.
D. Flooding prevention deserves further research.

If you recently had trouble figuring out if an image of a person is real or generated through artificial intelligence (AI), you’re not alone. A new study from University of Waterloo researchers found that people had more difficulty than was expected distinguishing who is a real person and who is artificially generated.
The Waterloo study saw 260 participants provided with 20 unlabeled pictures: 10 of which were of real people obtained from Google searches, and the other 10 generated by Stable Diffusion or DALL-E, two commonly used AI programs that generate images.
Participants were asked to label each image as real or AI-generated and explain why they made their decision. Only 61% of participants could tell the difference between AI-generated people and real ones, far below the 85% threshold (门槛) that researchers expected. “People are not as adept at making the distinction as they think they are,” said Andreea Pocol, a PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of Waterloo.
Participants paid attention to details such as fingers, teeth, and eyes as possible indicators when looking for AI-generated content - but their assessments weren’t always correct. Pocol noted that the nature of the study allowed participants to compare photos in detail, while most Internet users look at images in passing. “People who are just doomscrolling (滚动) or don’t have time won’t pick up on these clues, ” Pocol said.
Pocol added that the extremely rapid rate at which AI technology is developing makes it particularly difficult to understand the potential for malicious or illegal action posed by AI-generated images. The pace of academic research and legislation (立法) isn’t often able to keep up: AI-generated images have become even more realistic since the study began in late 2022.
“Disinformation isn’t new, but the tools of disinformation have been constantly shifting and progressing,” Pocol said. “It may get to a point where people, no matter how trained they are, will still struggle to differentiate real images from fakes. That’s why we need to develop tools to identify and oppose this.”
32. What does the underlined word “adept” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Expert. B. Quick. C. Alarmed. D. Puzzled.
33. What decreased the accuracy of the result of the experiment
A. Ignoring facial expressions. B. Drawing a conclusion in a hurry.
C. Lacking professional guidance. D. Failing to distinguish the details.
34. What’s Pocol’s advice on dealing with disinformation
A. Providing people with related training. B. Banning the spread of fake information.
C. Doing some field research in person. D. Developing practical tools to identify it.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. Methods of distinguishing disinformation.
B. Threats caused by AI-generated images.
C. Difficulties in telling AI-generated images.
D. Differences between artificial and real images.

Ava, a fifth-grader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To persuade her parents, she penned an essay, demonstrating she was mature enough for a cell phone. Her parents, impressed, gave her an old phone.
“Ava,” her dad said seriously, “a cell phone isn’t just for fun and games. It’s a significant responsibility. You must keep your phone secure. You must silence it in public spaces. You must...” He listed all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah’s mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but Sarah’s pleading words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the movie might actually be enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah’s mom instructed the girls to silence their phones out of respect for others. As the movie’s tension built, Ava found herself growing increasingly uncomfortable. “I need to go to the bathroom,” Ava whispered to Sarah.
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah’s mom to fetch the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. “I can’t find my phone!” she shrieked, patting down all of her pockets. Panic-stricken, Ava searched her bag, yet her phone seemed to have vanished. Ava got into the car, her stomach in knots.
“Are you going to tell your parents ” Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent, her mind racing with the consequences. She could envision her parents’ disappointed faces and harsh words. She feared that this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a phone altogether.
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and trudged home, her heart heavy with what had happened.

1. 续写词数应为150 个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The moment Ava walked in, her parents greeted her with a smile. She knew she had to tell them about the lost phone, but words stuck in her throat. Recalling the trust they had put in her with the phone, Ava felt a pang of distress as she prepared to confess. “I…I’ve lost my phone.” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. Her father’s brow furrowed. “Did it perhaps fall from your pocket during the movie Or could it have… ” Her mother inquired anxiously. When Ava admitted that, in her panic, she had forgotten to go back and search properly or ask for help, her parents exchanged a silent glance. “Accidents happen.” Her father assured her. “We’ll figure this out together.”
Then her parents drove her back to the cinema. They went to the reception desk and asked the cinema staff for help. It turned out that someone had turned the phone in to the front desk. They took the phone back. With a voice choked by emotion, Ava apologized to her father, “I know I messed up, Dad.” Placing a hand on her shoulder, her father told Ava that maturity wasn’t just about having a phone or not, but about how she handled situations, especially when they went wrong. “It comes along with a sense of responsibility. Remember to be responsible for your phone!” Her mother added, putting the phone back into Ava’s hand. As she held the device, she felt the familiar weight, a weight more significant than before.

W: Yeah. Here’s his address. Please take it with you. And please give him these medicines when you see him there.
Text 3
M: Jane, would you mind turning down the music
W: Why I thought you would like to listen to some music while working.
M: Yeah, but, you know, jazz and classical are not really my thing. I prefer folk.
Text 4
W: When does the school year start in Japan
M: In April. Do you start in September
W: No, in my country we start one month earlier than Japan.
M: That’s next month!
Text 5
M: Wow, you wear a long coat.
W: Well, my mom said I ought to get a really warm coat, so I tried on this long one, but my sister said the short one was more fashionable and so did the shop assistant.
M: But you bought the long one in the end.
W: Yeah.
Text 6
M: Have you finished your English homework
W: Yes. I spent forty minutes on it last night.
M: I didn’t start it until nine thirty last night, and finished it at ten five.
W: What did you do before that
M: I had to do my physics exercises first.
W: But we have no physics lesson today.
M: That’s true. I’m weak in physics, so I have to follow our teacher’s advice.
W: You are really a good boy. No wonder you are making progress in physics.
Text 7
M: Hey, Susan, how’s it going
W: Terrible. I’m really unhappy at Pat, the house owner. When I came home yesterday, the front door was wide open; the cat was hiding in the closet, and there was Pat. He came to change the pipe, but he didn’t even tell me that he was coming. He does this all the time. Last month, one day I was throwing a dinner party for eight people. When I went out for a minute to buy some wine, Pat came to repair the broken light in my bedroom. I nearly had a heart attack when I walked in and found him there.
M: At least he fixed the light.

M: That’s because the school doesn’t want the athletes to jump after eating. The jumping events take place after the throwing events. And the long distance race takes place before jumping events.
W: And after lunch
M: Actually, the school doesn’t want any events to take place in that time. But they can practice for the next event.
W: Do you mean the 100m race
M: Yes. It seems to be the most exciting event, so it takes place at the end of the day, which is over around 5:00 pm.

W: Don’t tell me you didn’t go to Garden House.
M: Why would I go there
W: For Liz’s birthday cake! I left you a voice message this morning!
M: But you said Matt would go to the bakery! And why did you come here without me I was waiting outside your apartment for an hour!
W: No! I said I’d have lunch with Matt, and we’d come straight here from the restaurant. So I asked you to help get the cake after work.
M: No, you did not! And why didn’t you answer my calls
W: My cellphone is dead! I said in the message that you could call Matt’s number if you wanted to find me. Now please tell me you did bring the gift we got for Liz.
M: What gift I’m sure you didn’t say anything about a gift in the message.
W: I told you that yesterday!
Text 10
W: Hi, everyone. I’d like to welcome you aboard our train trip through high desert scenery. Our trip today lasts one and a half hours and the train climbs uphill for the first forty-five minutes and then makes its way down to a town called Oldsville. In the twentieth century, oil was discovered here and an important industry developed. It didn’t last long, however, and tourism is the biggest industry these days. There’s a lot to see in the town. On the journey you won’t see any animals during the daytime because it’s too hot, but you should look out for beautiful desert plants right next to the track, although at this height there are no trees.
At one point, we go over an old wooden bridge. People get worried because it’s noisy, but it’s quite safe. There’s no river under the bridge, but you can see some large colorful rocks—they’re fantastic. We don’t make any stops on the trip because all the stations were closed long ago. At the far end of our train there’s a small store selling souvenirs that you can’t buy anywhere else. The other things which we sell during your ride are drinks. Unfortunately, the machine selling there is broken, so once we’re underway I’ll be walking down the train with everything in a basket. So stop me if you want anything.
