My husband and I used to live in the city, but we often faced a lot of problems there. There was a lot of late-night noise. It was difficult to find parking. And the rent of the apartment was high.
Finally, my husband and I decided to move to the suburbs (郊区) outside Boston. We started looking for our new home. It turned out that many other people were also moving to the suburbs and it wasn’t easy to find a nice house there. Finally, we went to see a small and dark house. It needed a lot of work. But it was well built and it was on a street where we could walk to Starbucks, restaurants and bus stops. Well, before I knew it, we had made an offer and the house became ours.
On our first night in the house I cried for five hours. I thought we had made the wrong choice and I wanted to go back to the city. The house was smelly and old. And many families and old people lived around it. But after thinking of the problems we had when we were living in the city, I calmed down. Besides, our new home wasn’t that bad, after all. I had a driveway of my own. There were three big bedrooms and a backyard for my dog. Oh, how lovely the sound of nothing was. I changed the house inch by inch and it became a very comfortable home.
We have been in our house for over two years until now and it’s the best move we have ever made. While I’m glad I can drive into the city in 15 minutes and enjoy all it has offered, I’m always happy to return home.
4. The writer and her husband moved to the suburbs because they ________.
A. no longer liked living in the city B. couldn’t afford the rent in the city
C. wanted to buy a small house D. found work there
5. On the first night in the house, the writer ________.
A. was too excited B. felt scared living there
C. regretted moving there at first D. was moved to tears by its quietness
6. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 show about the house
A. It was lovely. B. It was really quiet.
C. It had nothing in it. D. It had beautiful sound.
7. We can learn from the passage that the writer ________.
A. hates driving to the city B. is afraid of returning home
C. loves living in the suburbs now D. cannot wait to go back to the city

Children spend more time messaging each other on phones and websites than talking in Person, a survey has revealed. Text messages and social networking sites have become the common mode of youngsters aged 8 to 14.
A survey of modern childhood found that many youngsters are conscious that they are spending too much time on their computers and enjoy themselves the most when playing outside. But the lure of electronic products proves too strong for a quarter, while a fifth say their parents don’t like them playing outside because they are worried about strangers and injuries.
The “iGeneration report” suggested that youngsters are increasingly health-conscious and skeptical (特怀疑态度的) of commercialization, including gender-based labelling on toys and pop videos released by singers. More than half of those questioned care about eating healthily and one in 10 lectures their own parents about the food they are eating or buying, 42 percent of those questioned own a smart phone, with 36 percent admitting spending more time communicating with friends via instant messaging, such as texts or networking websites, than talking in person. Only one child in 100 said that being happy, having a loving family and being clever were taken as the most crucial (决定性的) elements in their lives.
Cary Cooper, the professor of organizational psychology and health at Lancaster University, said social media were contributing to youngsters becoming more independent. They had a sense of individuality due to exposure to a range of media.
The survey follows major state backed research which found that youngsters are turning their back on drink, drugs and smoking. It found a dramatic drop in the number of secondary school students trying and regularly using drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Some analysts said that thanks to the rise of social media, millions of teenagers are spending their time at home in their rooms rather than out on the streets.
8. Why can’t 25 percent of the children get away from electronic products
A. They are not allowed to hang out long.
B. They are protected from strangers and injuries.
C. They enjoy themselves most when playing outside.
D. They can’t resist the temptation of the products.
9. The survey of modern childhood found that many youngsters.
A. are fans of the pop videos released by singers
B. message each other more rather than chat in person
C. are doubtful about possessing the latest smart phones
D. pay no attention to their lifestyle nowadays
10. The attitude of Cary Cooper towards social media is.
A. objective B. negative
C. supportive D. unclear
11. The last paragraph is written to show.
A. the benefits of social media
B. the drop of taking drugs in youngsters

About 15 years ago, when my children were still in elementary school, I was very active in the Parent Teacher Association. At one of the monthly meetings the topic of discussion was the new curriculum (课程) that the state of Michigan was presenting. Many concerns were voiced at that meeting, and one of them was my own. My concern was that the children were being taught things that were once taught at a much later age.
Let’s face it: children today have to learn and adapt to a more technological society, one where if you’re not a peak performer you’re just not well received. Some say that the children of today have it so much easier than 10—20 years ago. They’re given so much more, not having to work for their toys and little extras. They sit all day long in front of a computer playing games… How hard can that be
I, for one, think that today’s child is missing out on so many wonderful experiences because of technology. What type of people skills are they learning They can thumb type faster than any other generation before them, but they can’t pick up the phone and have a really deep conversation.
There is an elementary school not far behind my home and I used to see children on the playground every day. Weekdays and weekends, there would be children playing, shouting with joy. But now I don’t see many children there after school, nor on the weekend. Has the playground gone from our children’s life
I know many teachers, some of whom are my friends, may throw a shoe at me when I say play doesn’t always need to have a purpose. And it doesn’t always have to have a teaching module included. To compete in today’s world, the children have to be experts at multitasking, and on top of their game at all times. I, for one, think this is a shame.
12. Why was the author concerned
A. The children didn’t learn much at school.
B. The parents’ opinions were not valued by schools.
C. The new curriculum was too advanced for the children.
D. The children were not interested in the new curriculum.
13. What should children learn according to the author
A. How to adapt to a technological society. B. How to communicate with others.
C. How to work for toys and extras. D. How to make a telephone call.
14. Which of the following would the author agree with
A. Children’s play should be well designed.
B. Play and learning should go hand in hand.
C. The multitasking ability is more important than play.
D. Children should be allowed to play purposelessly.
15. What does the underlined part “throw a shoe at” mean in the last paragraph
A. Disagree with. B. Laugh at. C. Accept. D. Hit.

In a house far from the city lived John and his mother. John’s only hobby was wandering in the nearby picturesque forest. In its center was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. Lovely animals such as deer or rabbits were playing around and cute birds were singing in trees. Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he desired to become a great artist and present all the breath-taking scenes to the world.
John studied in the local primary school. Life was not easy for John and his mom after his father died. Knowing what hard work his mother did to make ends meet, John really didn’t want his mother to worry. His mother knew the significance of education in life but she was against his dream of becoming an artist. “The profession of artist can’t aid a person in meeting his daily expenses,” she would say. But as each day passed, John’s dream became more passionate.
Due to the living circumstances, even buying some new colors would be a luxury. John only used the worn drawing file and limited colors for his daily practice. Though lacking fine painting materials, he never gave up drawing. He spent a significant amount of time staying in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinct gift for art, he drew beautifully.
One day John read about a competition being held in the town, whose deadline was only two days away. He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he was in a dilemma (两难境地) as for the competition he needed special paints and some brushes. He didn’t have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew her prejudice against art.
That evening his mom returned from work and handed him a few paper notes, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was enough for his desired materials! John’s face lit up.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Great Moments in the Sports Meet
Last Friday and Saturday, our school held its annual sports meet on the playground. It was a huge success, with students participating in various sports, including running, high jump, and long jump.
One unforgettable moment was the 4×100m relay race when our class broke the school record. The cheers from the crowd were overwhelming. Despite losing last year, the team’s hard work and dedication this year paid off, demonstrating the true spirit of teamwork.
Overall, the sports meet was a reminder that sports are not just about winning or losing, but about teamwork, perseverance, and respect. It was inspiring to see everyone come together and celebrate the joy of sports.

【答案】 Early the next morning, John secretly left home with the money. Hastily, he bought paper and pens for painting, and then dashed to the completion. After signing up for it, he was given the task. It was his time. He was deeply absorbed in his work, forgetting everything around him. After finishing his task, he went home, with birds singing for him. Every day, he looked forward to the result happily and anxiously, though he felt hungry. It seemed that the time stopped.
A week later, a phone call came to John’s home. Hearing what the man said, his mother felt puzzled, not knowing how his son had done it, because she knew it needed money. As soon as John arrived home, his mother told him the news, and waited for his explanation. Knowing the truth, her eyes welled up with tears. Hugging her son tightly, she apologized to him. But he was happy, not only because he had got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire, but also he was awarded a lot of money because of his work.
