“I have cancer.” Mom said and held me in a tight hug. I could feel her chest shaking as she tried not to cry but failed.
For all of my twenty-four years, my mom had been supportive. Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me. Now I knew it would have to flow the other way.
Mom didn’t stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer, she armed herself with a notebook and a penand a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts (白细胞数量) and medications (药物) with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school. “The not-knowing is the worst.” she said.
The operation was successful. The chemo (化疗) was the harder part. I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She rarely complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one. She joked that she could save money on nail polish and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish. “Cancer can take my hair, my nails, my health, my very life. But it can’t take my smile.” Mom said.
Mom learned to share her fears with me, and it formed an even deeper bond (纽带) between us. Yet I am certain there were fears she didn’t share because she was still protecting me—worries she only shared with Dad. Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer. Mom always said, “When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it, you take away some of its power.”
Mom was one of the lucky ones. She did beat her cancer, though not without scars. From her, I’ve learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it.
4. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean
A. There were other ways to treat cancer.
B. I should be the one being there for Mom.
C. Mom had to stay stronger to beat cancer.
D. Knowledge of cancer would be helpful.
5. Which of the following words can best describe Mom
A. Humorous and creative.
B. Caring and knowledgeable.
C. Honest and intelligent.
D. Optimistic and determined.
6. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about
A. The ways Mom faced fear.
B. The fear Mom shared with me.
C. The jokes Mom told me.
D. The bond Mom and I formed.
7. What lesson did the author learn from Mom
A. Luck counts in beating diseases.
B. Positive attitudes get one through hardship.
C. Complaint does no good to one’s health.
D. Sharing feelings helps reduce sufferings a lot.
C
Buying furniture is easier than ever. You can even order a new table and chairs online without ever leaving home. But did you ever think about how furniture is made The process begins with trees but now researchers have found a better way: growing it in a lab instead of a forest. Instead of cutting down trees and adding to deforestation, Velasquez-Garcia said, “If you want a table, then you should just grow a table.”
The research group found a way to actually grow plant tissue (组织) — wood and fiber — in a lab that is similar to the way cultured meat is grown. While there is still a long way to go to actually grow a table, the team was able to grow structures from cells from zinnia leaves.
Making furniture and other items from biomaterials could eliminate cutting down trees in forests. “The way we get these materials hasn’t changed in centuries and is very inefficient,” said Velasquez-Garcia. “This is a real chance to avoid all that inefficiency.”
There are other benefits to using lab wood too. Lab grown wood can be handled to take on any shape — like 3 D printing — so it may be possible to build a table without glue or screwing parts together.
Beckwith, a mechanical engineering PhD student, was inspired by a visit to a farm to try to make land-use more efficient and environmentally sound. “That got me thinking: Can we be more strategic (战略上的) about what we’re getting out of our process Can we get more yield for our inputs ” she told MIT News. “I wanted to find a more efficient way to use land and resources so that we could let more farmlands remain wild, or to remain lower production but allow for greater biodiversity.”
Today, the two largest uses of trees are to make wood products and paper. When new biomaterials become readily available, forests will lose their economic value and will be preserved for their environmental, health, and recreational value. These researchers, like Velasquez-Garcia, are speaking for the trees.
8. What does the author think of growing furniture according to Paragraph 1
A. It turns out to be convenient.
B. It’ll cut down daily expense.
C. It might have a bright future.
D. It’s as important as making furniture.
9. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Risk. B. Fancy. C. Remove. D. Delay.
10. What is the purpose of Beckwith’s growing furniture
A. To make large profits.
B. To keep biodiversity.
C. To increase production.
D. To use wild resources.
11. What’s the key to protecting forests
A. Wide use of new biomaterials.
B. Less use of wood products and paper.
C. Making effective forest laws.
D. Caring more for the environment.

Astronauts traveling in space meet forms of radiation(辐射)that are uncommon on Earth. Some of this radiation has been shown to be harmful to human health. It is linked to cancers and heart problems. Yet a new American study suggests the radiation does not shorten astronauts' lives.
Researchers studied nearly 60 years of health records and other data about male astronauts from the United States. They then compared this data with information about a group of men who are in good health, richer than most Americans and receive good health care-professional athletes. The study found that neither group has higher rates of dying at a young age. In fact, both groups generally live longer than other Americans.
Astronauts are usually well-educated, earn more money and are in better physical conditions than the average Americans Some earlier research has linked being an astronaut to a lower risk of early death, the researchers noted. The findings were reported in the medical journal Occupational&Environmental Medicine.
Much of the existing research on mortality rates(死亡率) in astronauts has not yet explored the mental and physical demands of this job. There also has not been a lot of research on whether astronauts show what is known as the "healthy worker effect". This effect leads people with employment of any kind to have fewer medical problems than people who are unable to work, said Robert Reynolds.
Reynolds said, "The challenge has always been to understand if astronauts are as healthy as they would be had they been otherwise comparably employed but had never gone to space at all. To do this, we need to find a group that is comparable on several important factors."
12. How did researchers carry out their study
A. By doing interviews. B. By analyzing some factors.
C. By comparing different data. D. By doing experiments in the lab.
13. What can we team from the text
A. All radiation is harmful to human health.
B. Athletes tend to be poorer than most Americans.
C. Healthy worker effect makes working people healthier.
D. Research has explored the mental and physical demands of being astronauts.
14 What can be inferred from Reynolds' words
A. They are determined to face the challenge.
B. The research is almost impossible to conduct.
C. Several important factors hold back the research.
D. Astronauts are healthier than they haven’t been astronauts.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Astronauts--Healthy or Otherwise
B. Astronauts Are as Healthy as Athletes
C. Radiation Affects Astronauts' Health
D. Astronauts--- Well-Educated and Well-Paid

第二节作文
Many wild animals are in danger of dying out, because the environment they are living in has changed greatly. For example, with the development of cities, the serious pollution affects their living areas, which have become narrower and narrower. Many of the wild animals, now are facing food crisis. At the same time, man is killing off species just for their fur skin, horns, teeth and meat.
To protect wild animals, first, people should raise the protection awareness. Second, measures of the following should be taken: pollution standards are made to keep down poisons in the air; killing wild animals is prohibited; national parks should be set up as wild life reserves.
Only when we take some measures can wild animals be preserved.
