For children, space is magical — a whole world is out there, with so many things to learn and stories to read. Here are some children’s books about space and the solar system.
Mae among the Stars by Stasia Burrington
This beautifully illustrated picture book is attractive to young kids. It was inspired by the first African American woman in space, Mae Jemison. It tells the story of Mae as a little girl, who always knew she had big dreams about space. This is a great addition to a young kid’s collection, as a reminder to hold tight to dreams and never give up.
Space by Libby Jackson
This beautifully illustrated book gives kids a look at 50 women from around the world who were involved in exploring space in some way, from the 19th century to the present day. This is a perfect gift for young kids who want to know more about some of the lesser-known scientific achievements related to space exploration.
Chasing Space by Leland Melvin
This is Melvin’s story about being a football player-turned-astronaut, along with his recovery from an injury that nearly left him deaf. Kids will love reading his story about how he faced challenges and advanced ahead, and he also includes DIY experiments for kids to try, and a section of full-color photographs.
System and Beyond by David A. Aguilar
The book is full of beautiful illustrations of space, and is perfect for kids of all ages, exploring various planets and the solar system. Unlike other kids’ space book, this is a National Geographic book written and illustrated by an award-winning astronomer and space artist. Aguilar is also the former Director of Science Information and Public Outreach at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Lindsey Stallworth, a high school student from Alabama, is on her way to a promising career in paleontology (古生物学) due to an unexpected discovery on family property. For years, she had been collecting fossils on their land in Monroe County, unaware of significant scientific value. However, her teacher at the Alabama School of Math and Science, Dr. Andrew Gentry, a paleontologist himself, took an interest when she showed him her collection.
“Upon examining the fossil shark teeth Lindsey presented, I quickly identified one and became eager to learn about its origin,” said Andrew.
Lindsey guided her teacher through the rural area where she had unearthed various relics including shark teeth. Before long, they encountered an especially significant find on the grounds: a large bone from a 34-million-year-old whale skeleton! This led the pair to launch the huge project of uncovering the rest of the bones. After two months of hard work, they’ve managed to find the animal’s skull (颅骨).
“Assuming the entire skeleton is present, it may require several years for us to have the entire animal back in the lab,” Andrew explained.
Lindsey secured a research scholarship to persist in her fossil-digging expeditions alongside her instructor. Her enthusiasm for the project was at an all-time high, though she had never imagined a childhood pastime would lead her down this road. “We would go out and pick up shark teeth and fossil shells, but we never knew anyone that could tell us anything about them,” she recalled. “We just thought they were cool.”
“The Research Fellows Program allows Lindsey to gain real-world experience in scientific research and even present that research at professional conferences,” Andrew said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a high school student to stand out when applying to college and maybe even discover a new career path.”
4. Why was Andrew fascinated by Lindsey’s finds
A. He had a personal interest in geography.
B. He recognized the significance of one fossil.
C. He was hoping to be financially independent.
D. He wanted to start a paleontology club at school.
5. What inspired Andrew and Lindsey to start a fossil uncovering project
A. A primitive whale’s bone. B. Some fossil shells.
C. An animal’s skull. D. Some shark teeth.
6. Which of the following best describes Andrew and Lindsey’s project
A. Risky but interesting. B. Dangerous but rewarding.
C. Demanding but motivating. D. Boring but groundbreaking.
7. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The unexpected joy of discovering fossils.
B. The additional benefits of applying to college.
C. Lindsey’s potential to become a high school teacher.
D. Lindsey’s unique opportunities for future development.

Today, poetry and science are often considered to be completely separate career paths. However, that wasn’t always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets. Similarly, the poet John Keats was also a licensed surgeon. The combination of these disciplines fell out of favor in the 1800s. Recently, however, there has been a reappearance of interest among scientists in expressing their research through poetry, such as lyrics and haiku, as alternative ways to inspire others with their findings.
“Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world,” says Sam Illingworth, a poet and a geoscientist who works at the University of Western Australia. Through workshops and a new science-poetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki, participated in one of Illingworth’s workshops where she and fellow scientists were tasked with writing haikus that highlighted water, a common theme in their research. “It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly easy to write the poem,” Mazon says. She plans to continue writing. “We do harm ourselves to think that scientists can’t be artistic and that art can’t be used to communicate scientific ideas,” Mazon says.
That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands-off PowerPoint slides. “Actually, when science communication involves writing and sharing poems, it invites a two-way dialogue between experts and nonexperts,” he says. Scientist-poet Manjula Silva, an educator at Imperial College London, agrees, noting that poetry simplifies complex scientific concepts into language that everyone can understand.
Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding with others. The distinction between scientists and poets is less than people might think. We’re all just people with hopefully really interesting things to say and to share.
8. What trend has been observed recently among scientists
A. A decline in interest in poetry and science. B. A preference for traditional research methods.
C. An increase in combining science and poetry. D. A focus on historical figures like Ada Lovelace.
9. How does Sam Illingworth bridge the gap between science and the public
A. By translating classic poetry into different languages.
B. By teaching at the University of Western Australia.
C. By advocating for more funding in geoscience research.
D By organizing workshops and publishing a science-poetry journal.
10. How did Stephany Mazon feel about the experience of writing a haiku in the workshop
A. It was challenging and difficult. B. It was enjoyable and straightforward.
C. It was a waste of time. D. It was too artistic for her taste.
11. What is one advantage of using poetry for science communication
A. It simplifies complex scientific ideas for a general audience.
B. It promotes academic research in universities.
C. It replaces traditional boring science textbooks.
D. It emphasizes the significance of public lectures.

Researchers in Japan say they will begin selling new devices that will help people cut down on the amount of salt they use to improve the taste of their food. The developers are from Japan’s Meiji University and drink company Kirin based in Tokyo.
One new device is an electric spoon, which sends a weak electric current to the tongue. The current is too weak to be felt. However, it makes salt taste one and a half times stronger. This means we can eat food with less salt, but still sense a salty taste.
The Electric Salt Spoon will sell in Japan for around $120 beginning in June. Meiji University professor Homei Miyashita developed the spoon and a similar device electric chopsticks. The chopsticks will likely go on sale next year.
The recent announcement marks the first time the technology has been used in a product for sale to the public. Last year, the effort gained a different sort of attention. It won the 2023 Ig Nobel Prize in nutrition. Organizers describe the prize as recognizing research that makes “people LAUGH, then THINK. ”
Miyashita and his laboratory have explored ways that technology can create human sensory experiences. They have also developed a lickable TV screen that can recreate the taste of food.
The beer producer Kirin is turning to healthcare products to expand its traditional business. A company spokesperson said the technology might be especially useful for Japanese people, whose traditional diet favors salty foods. The average adult in Japan consumes about 10 grams of salt per day. The World Health Organization recommends half that amount.
Eating foods with too much salt can increase the chances of having cardiovascular diseases, like high blood pressure and heart attacks. “To prevent these diseases, we need to reduce the amount of salt we take,” said Kirin researcher Ai Sato. Sato said it is hard to cut salt in the usual way because it would mean “eating bland food.”
12. What is the chief purpose of the new devices
A. To make food taste less tasty. B. To cook food more efficiently.
C. To help people reduce their salt intake. D. To replace traditional cooking devices.
13. What is the main idea of the third paragraph
A. The practical application of different electric devices. B. The price and availability of the electric devices.
C. The awards won by the Electric Salt Spoon. D. The importance of reducing salt intake.
14. Why might the technology be especially useful for Japanese people
A. They traditionally prefer salty foods. B. Their diet contains too much fat and sugar.
C. Japan produces a large amount of salt each year. D. Many Japanese suffer from cardiovascular diseases.
15. What does the underlined phrase “bland food ” in the last paragraph most probably mean
A. Food that is very salty. B. Food that is tasteless. C. Food that is not healthy. D. Food that is too bitter.

When you’re planning scheduled activities, knowing what to expect can help you feel mentally prepared for what’s to come. Nearing the doorway, Lucy took a deep breath. Standing in front of the door, she was afraid whether her mother would forgive her for her rudeness. But when she thought of her mother’s familiar face and the noodle seller’s kind advice, she decided to knock on the door bravely. Her mother opened the door but Lucy was so ashamed that she didn’t know what to say.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. Lucy couldn’t help crying and said “Sorry, mom, I know I have made a big mistake. I shouldn’t have quarreled with you. I shouldn’t have run away from home. Could you forgive me ” Lucy’s mother was moved, saying “Good girl, never mind, I also should make an apology to you for scolding at you angrily. I am very worried about you. ” Tears rolled down from both of their faces and they hugged each other tightly.
