Le’ Ann Solmonson, a professional counselor (顾问) in Nacogdoches, Texas, has seen families fall into a pattern as children reach adolescence (青春期): The youth want more autonomy and begin to push against their parents’ rules. In response, the parents tighten their control or give punishment, only to have the adolescent push back harder and break more rules. Thus conflicts happen.
“Adolescents’ goal is to figure out ‘Who am I Where do I fit in ’ and begin that separation from their parents. Some of that development leads to trying out new things,” says Solmonson. “These are natural things that can fuel disagreements.”
In counseling, Solmonson often asks a teen and his or her parents to name a small conflict they struggle with. She invites the teen to explain his or her views about the disagreement. Then, she encourages the parents to give their views and repeat what their child said. Usually, the parents immediately jump to why the teen’s take is wrong. If this happens, Solmonson will remind them that she wants to hear what they think of their child’s view is, not whether it’s right or wrong. She also gives the adolescent the same assignment: Paraphrase (转述) your parents’ position without giving an opinion on what was said. The aim, she explains, is to develop understanding toward the other party’s viewpoint.
Parents often need to work on how they respond t to their teen when what they see as a mistake occurs. Cooperating with the teen to find out what led to the situation and what they need to solve it will prevent them furthering the conflict, Solmonson stresses. Instead of responding in anger, she coaches parents to use supportive statements like “That must have been so stressful. How can we prevent that happening again ”
Moreover, Solmonson often stresses that if parents want respect during disagreements with their child, they’ll need to show it themselves. If a teen answers disrespectfully, Solmonson coaches parents to respond by saying, “I’m going to give you a do-over. Do you need a minute to think about how to say that ” rather than blowing up in anger.
4. What do children expect to do when turning adolescents
A. Become more independent. B. Control their anger.
C. Prevent parent-child conflicts. D. Set new boundaries.
5. What is parents’ common response to Solmonson’s question in counseling
A. Summarizing their experience. B. Pointing out the child’s risk-taking behaviors.
C. Explaining the wrongness of the child’s views. D. Offering their opinions about disagreements.
6. What is Solmonson’s advice for parents when their teen makes a mistake
A. Deal with it on their own. B. Give immediate punishment.
C. Ignore it without discussion. D. Work together for its cause.
7. What can we know from the last paragraph
A. It is necessary for parents to blow up angrily. B. Teens often disrespect their parents.
C. Parents should model respect for their teens. D. Disagreements are hard to solve.

Think of a typical college physics course: notetaking, homework struggles and studying for difficult exams. Now imagine access to a tutor (导师) who answers questions at any hour, never tires and never judges. Might you learn more The AI-supported tutor is surprisingly more effective. That’s the unexpected conclusion from a Harvard study examining learning outcomes for students in a large physics course.
The study was led by lecturer Gregory Kestin and Kelly Miller, who analyzed learning outcomes of 194 students registered in fall 2023 in Kestin’s Physical Sciences 2 course. Before the study, the team created instructions for the AI tutor to follow for each lesson so it’d behave like an experienced instructor.
The students were divided into two groups, each of whom experienced two lessons in continual weeks. During the first week, Group 1 participated in an instructor-guided active learning classroom lesson, while Group 2 engaged with an AI-supported lesson at home that followed a research-informed design; conditions were changed oppositely the following week.
“We went into the study curious about whether our AI tutor could be as effective as in-person instructors,” Kestin said. “I certainly didn’t expect students to find the AI-powered lesson more engaging. But that’s exactly what happened: Not only did the AI tutor seem to help students learn more materials, the students also self-reported more engagement when working with AI.”
The researchers found that learning gains for students in the AI-tutored group were about double those for students in the in-class group. The researchers believe students’ ability to get personalized feedback (反馈) and self pace with the AI tutor are advantages. “In various in-class settings, students with a strong background in the material may be less engaged, and they’re sometimes bored,” Miller said. “Students without the background sometimes struggle to keep up. So the fact that this AI tutor can be supportive of that difference is probably the biggest thing.”
“However AI could also hurt learning if we’ re not careful,” Kestin said. “AI tutors shouldn’t ‘think’ for students, but rather help them build critical thinking skills. AI tutors shouldn’t replace in-person instruction, but help all students better prepare for it.”
8. What were the participants required to do in the study
A. Make a choice between two courses. B. Instruct the AI tutor in learning skills.
C. Report their partners’ feelings. D. Study with different tutors in turn.
9. What did Kestin most probably think of their findings
A. Valueless. B. Doubtful. C. Confusing. D. Surprising.
10. What might probably lead to students’ less engagement in class according to the text
A. Inexperienced in-class instructors. B. Knowing the materials well in advance.
C. Feeling bored with AI’s questions. D. Their struggles with the teacher.
11. What can we learn from what Kestin said
A. There exists the potential misuse of AI. B. Researchers are more positive about AI.
C. AI tutors should develop critical thinking. D. In-person instruction benefits students more.
D
Children are taught that the polite thing to do is always say “please”. Today’s babies are even taught it using sign language. But how often do you really say “please” in everyday conversations A new research published in Social Psychology Quarterly found people used the word “please” when making a request only 7% of the time.
“We definitely were surprised by the results,” says Tanya Stivers, a professor of sociology at University of California at Los Angeles and one of the authors of the study. “Having such a low number feels counterintuitive.”
Using conversation analysis, the study investigated when and where people use “please” in everyday requests. Not only do people use “please” less than 10% of the time when making requests, but they also tend to use it most when they expect a “no” response is forthcoming. Most interestingly, requests phrased with “please” are no more likely to work than other polite requests. Why Because the word “please” is being used as a way to convince the other person into agreeing with a request they might otherwise be unwilling to do. This small talk can leave the person being asked feeling uncomfortable.
“We found that using ‘please’ often indicates that you’re requesting something you shouldn’t be,” Stivers says. According to the study, people are most likely to use “please” when asking someone to stop doing what they’ re doing and do what the asker wants instead, or when making a request they think the other person isn’t going to like.
“What people are really trying to say by saying ‘please’ often is that they’ re polite people,” Stivers says. “Sometimes, it doesn’t mean you’ re not being polite just because you’ re not saying ‘please’. There’ re many other phrases we use when making requests to show politeness.” These include things like, “Would you mind... ”, “Would it be OK... ” and “How about... ”
It is so funny that we socialize children to do this thing we adults don’t do, but teaching kids to say “please” isn’t bad. Just ensure you’re also including other polite phrases. “If someone is trying to be more polite, I’d recommend adding other polite phrases first, before adding in more ‘please’,” says Stivers.
12. What does the underlined word “counterintuitive” in paragraph 2 mean
A. The same as the fact. B. Contrary to common sense.
C. Reasonable to accept. D. Difficult to disagree with.
13. Why does “please” probably fail to work as effectively as expected
A. It makes one feel forced. B. It is said in a rude manner.
C. It leaves the asker stressed. D. It gives one a sense of mistrust.
14. What is probably Tanya Stivers’s opinion about being polite
A. It asks people to make requests. B. It means saying “please” more.
C. It ought to be done smartly. D. It is a result of societal change.
15. What might be the best title for the text
A. Polite Phrases Now Have Got New Meanings.
B. Polite Phrases Are Used More Often in Daily Life.
C. Many Other Polite Phrases Are Replacing “Please”.
D. “Please” May Soon Become a Thing of the Past.

At first glance (扫视), a name seems a basic part of one’s identity; yet its power in shaping identity is undeniable. “____16____ So it serves as the very basis of one’s self-conception, especially in relation to others,” said Professor David Zhu from Arizona State University. It carries more weight than imagined, from how we relate to the world around us to our personal development.
____17____ In one example, the names Elizabeth and Misty were studied. Those called Elizabeth came across as warm and competent, while Mistys were seen as low on both of these traits (特性). Such viewpoints may lead to real-world consequences, potentially affecting everything from job applications to dating.
Interestingly, names may also shape our personalities. ____18____ Zhu’s research found that CEOs with unique names often pursued more distinctive business strategies. “CEOs with a unique name tend to develop a self-conception of being different from peers (同辈), motivating them to pursue untraditional strategies,” Zhu explained.
Names may also lead to life choices. People with unique names were viewed as better suited to creative jobs, according to Psychology Today. They discovered Chinese film directors with distinctive names received higher ratings for their work. This suggests that accepting the uniqueness of names could potentially unlock creative potential. ____19____ People with more common names may experience greater social acceptance and likability in the short term.
As both unique names and common names have their advantages, perhaps finding the middle road is a solution when naming a child. ____20____ But meanwhile, also call the child by a special and unique nickname. Anyway, your name is your story — make it a great one!
A. Names may influence how others view us.
B. Actually, common names also have their advantages.
C. Choosing the best name is of importance, according to Zhu.
D People with unique names might develop a stronger sense of individuality.
E. A name is used to identify an individual and communicate with the individual.
F. Zhu recommends giving a child a more common name to get social acceptance.
G. Whether your name is common or rare, it is an important part of your identity.

It was a normal Sunday morning. I might have been nine years old. The sun shone through my curtains, gently waking me up. Then I heard my mom’s voice from downstairs.
“Emily! Breakfast is ready!”
I quickly got dressed and raced down the stairs, the smell of pancakes guiding me to the kitchen. My little brother, Tommy, was already at the table, staring at the pancakes.
“Morning, sleepyhead,” Dad said with a smile as I sat down.
As we ate, Mom mentioned, “Your Aunt Sarah is coming over later. She’s bringing some old photo albums (相册).”
I sighed secretly. Photo albums meant hours of sitting still when the adults recalled the good old days, talking about grandmothers and grandfathers. But little did I know this Sunday would be different.
After breakfast, I determined to make the most of my free time before Aunt Sarah arrived. I headed to the backyard, where our tree house stood tall and was inviting. As I climbed up, I noticed something odd — a small key hanging from one of the branches.
Out of curiosity, I called out to Tommy. He climbed up the ladder, his eyes widening at the sight of the key. “Whoa! Where did that come from ”
“I don’t know,” I replied, carefully taking it down. “But I think we should investigate.”
For the next hour, we searched the backyard, looking for anything the key might open. We checked old toy boxes, the garden shed and even the loose boards on the fence. Nothing seemed to fit. Just as we were about to give up, we heard Aunt Sarah’s car pull into the driveway. Disappointed but still interested, we headed inside.
“There are my favorite niece and nephew!” Aunt Sarah cheered, enveloping us with a warm hug. She set down a large, dusty box on the coffee table. To our surprise, the box wasn’t filled with photo albums, but with all sorts of trinkets (小饰品).

Dear Chris,
I’m Li Hua. Next Friday, our class will take part in the school English song chorus competition. The competition will be held in the school hall at 3 p.m. Each class is required to sing two English songs within 10 minutes. We have been preparing for this for a long time.
However, we still hope that we can improve our performance further. So I’m writing to seek your advice. I wonder if you can give us some suggestions on how we can better coordinate our voices, because good voice coordination is crucial for a chorus. Also, we are not sure what we can do to make our performance more attractive on stage.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
As Aunt Sarah began to explain each item, I couldn’t help but notice an old, wooden box at the bottom. It was intricately carved with patterns that seemed to dance in the light. The wood was smooth to the touch, as if it had been handled many times over the years. I felt a strange connection to it, as if it held secrets waiting to be uncovered. Aunt Sarah noticed my fascination and smiled. “That box,” she said, her voice filled with nostalgia, “has been in our family for generations. It’s said to contain treasures beyond measure, but it’s been locked away for as long as anyone can remember.”
Aunt Sarah’s jaw dropped as I put the key into the lock. With a soft click, the box opened, revealing a collection of items that seemed io glow with an inner light. There were coins from far-off lands, a tiny, intricately painted doll, and a small, leather-bound book. As we examined each item, Aunt Sarah shared stories of our ancestors, of adventures and love, of struggles and triumphs. The items in the box were not just trinkets; they were pieces of our family’s history, tangible connections to the past. Tommy and I listened, captivated, as Aunt Sarah’s words brought the stories to life. That Sunday, we didn’t just look at old photos; we stepped into the stories of our family, and the key we found unlocked not just a box, but a world of memories and traditions that would stay with us forever.
