John has been a devoted hockey (冰球) enthusiast. In the past around two decades back, John, a part of the local junior league team, The Rapid, was an influential ice hockey competitor in his hometown, even with a considerable group of admirers. However, a knee injury in his teenage years ended his hopes of a career on the ice.
Years passed, and John grew into a successful businessman, but his love for hockey never disappeared. One day, he stumbled upon an opportunity to review his childhood passion. The Rapid was organizing a charity (慈善) game to raise money for the town’s youth sports program. John reached out to the team’s manager, Mr Smith, with a special request. He wanted to suit up and play as the goaltender (守门员) for one period of the game, just for the fun of it and to encourage the younger players. Mr Smith was delighted and quickly arranged for John to join the team for the day.
The news that John would take part in the game spread like wildfire in the town, and the stadium was packed with excited supporters. On the big day, John put on his old, a bit worn but still cherished hockey equipment (装备). He stepped onto the ice, feeling a rush of emotions that he hadn’t felt in decades. The crowd burst into cheers as he faced the first shot, and with each save, the energy grew. After the game, John surprised everyone by donating his game-worn equipment and a generous check to the local youth sports program. “I may not have been able to become a professional,” he said, “but I’m happy to give back and help these kids chase their dreams.”
People were deeply moved by John’s selflessness in supporting the next generation. It was a reminder that even when our own dreams seem out of reach we can still make a difference to the lives of others.

The conditions for some of extreme fires in recent years have become between 3 and 20 times globally. Record-breaking fires burned in Canada and turned skies far away in New York orange and grey. The largest recorded fires in the European Union killed 19 people in Greece, and fires in western Amazonia brought dirt y air to local towns. And we just went through a super destructive wildfire season in Athens, Greece, in August 2024.
A major report shows that the amount of carbon emissions (碳排放) from wildfires between 2023 and 2024 was 8.2 billion tons of CO2. Forest wildfires would release more carbon emissions, pose a higher risk to people, and take longer to recover.
There is no single definition of what fire can be an extreme fire. It could be measured by burned area, intensity, or how unusual they are. “At 200 square kilometres, this year’s fires in Greece are much smaller than the 900 square kilometres burned last fire season, but it would count as an extreme fire, because of its closeness to and potential damage to people,” said author Dr Joe McNorton.
When this big wildfire tears through Athens, scientists in Europe are racing to understand why extreme fires like this are becoming more common. They find climate change is the key factor. Warmer temperatures dry out forests, which make a fire more likely to spread. It can also cause more plants to grow, which provides more fuel (燃料) for the fire. Humans also influence fires, like starting them themselves, breaking up the landscape, or how well they fight them.
Dr Joe says the report will both guide preparations for wildfires, and help the world understand the simple fact that fires will keep getting worse until fossil fuels are replaced with renewable energy sources. To tackle the problem, leaders should consider protecting forest boundaries, reducing the amount of natural fuel fire, imposing fire bans on high-risk days, and investing more in early warning prediction systems.
8. How is paragraph 1 developed
A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By discussing solutions. D. By explaining causes.
9. Why was the fire in Greece considered as an extreme fire
A. It burned a very large area. B. It brought harmful effects.
C. It had much carbon emissions. D. It lasted a long period of time.
10. What mainly causes extreme fires
A. Size of forests. B. Human behavior. C. Location of fires. D. Climate warming.
11. What does the underlined word “tackle” in the last paragraph mean
A. Apply for. B. Bring about. C. Deal with. D. Focus on.

Spanish scientist Pilar Bosch has found a way to use bacteria (细菌) to repair 18th-century paintings. Bosch, a microbiologist, said that she got the idea for the method while considering possibilities for a paper toward her doctoral degree. During this process, she discovered someone else’s paper that suggested bacteria can be used to repair artworks.
At around the same time, Bosch learned that her mother, Pilar Roig, was struggling to find a good method for repairing 18th-century paintings. The paintings, by Spanish artist Antonio Palomino, sat in Santos Juanes—one of the oldest churches in the city of Valencia. Pilar Roig noted how difficult the repair process at the church was. One reason was the glue (胶水) used to remove the paintings from the walls in the 1960s. The glue was nearly impossible to remove completely.
“My mother had a very difficult problem to solve and I found a paper about bacteria used to clean paintings on walls in Italy,” Bosch said. Bosch added she decided to write her doctoral paper on the same subject. Today, she gets to work with her mother on the church repair. They are using the bacteria method to remove glue from artworks. The $4.46 million project is being financed by local organizations.
To repair they feed small amounts of the glue that was made from animal collagen (胶原蛋白) to the bacteria. After a time, the bacteria begin to naturally produce enzymes (酶) to break down the glue. The mother-daughter team then mixes the bacteria with a natural algae-based substance, called a gel (凝胶), and places it onto the paintings. After about three hours, the gel mixture is removed, leaving the paintings glue-free.
Bosch’s mother, now 75, noted that in the past, people working on repairing artworks had to use traditional cleaning methods that took hours and damaged the painting. Bosch is now training other scientists to use a different kind of bacteria to clear walls of painted graffiti.
12. How did Bosch find the way to repair old paintings
A. Her mother inspired her. B. Her doctor instructed her.
C. She tested it out by many experiments. D. She found it when preparing her paper.
13. What made it difficult to repair the old paintings
A. Not having enough money. B. The history of the churches.
C. The glue that was once used. D. Experience of past failures.
14. What is paragraph 4 centered on
A. The process of cleaning the paintings.
B. The necessity of repa ring the paintings.
C. The challenges facing the mother-daughter team.
D. The materials that are used to clean the paintings.
15. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Bacteria Removal Process Is Widely Used in Spain.
B. Spanish Scientist Uses Bacteria to Repair Artworks.
C. Old Artworks Are Likely to Be Repaired with Bacteria.
D. Spanish Mother-Daughter Team Discovered A Painting.

Walter Carr never dreamed his 20-mile journey would end up changing his life. Walter Carr is a young man from Alabama who faced a tough situation on the night before his first day at a new job. He had just been hired by Bellhop, a moving company, and was eager to make a great impression.
However, things took an unexpected turn when his car broke down, leaving him in trouble. The job site was located 20 miles away in Pelham, and Walter, without any other choice, made a bold (大胆的) decision.
Walter was determined not to miss his first day, no matter what. Instead of calling in to explain his situation or simply giving up, he decided to walk the entire 20 miles to his new workplace.
It was a challenging choice, but Walter’s mindset was clear: He had a job to do, and he wasn’t going to let anything stand in his way. With a quick sleep to prepare himself, he set out around midnight, walking the dark, empty streets to reach his destination.
After a few hours, he crossed paths with a police officer who was patrolling(巡逻) the area. Curious about what Walter was doing out on foot so early in the morning, the officer stopped him to ask. When Walter explained his situation, the officer was moved by his determination. Instead of just sending him on his way, the officer decided to help. He bought Walter breakfast and then offered him a ride for the rest of the journey. By the time they reached Pelham, it was still early.
Walter and the officer arrived at the home of the Lamey family, who were scheduled for a move that day. The officer introduced Walter to the Lameys, explaining how he had met this “nice kid” who had walked 20 miles just to get to work. Jenny Hayden Lamey, the homeowner, was immediately impressed by Walter’s determination and perseverance (毅力).

Explore The Beauty Of Chinese
I am writing to express my interest in becoming your Chinese language practice partner. As a native Chinese speaker, I am confident in my fluency and would be delighted to help you improve your Mandarin skills.
I believe that we can benefit each other in this language exchange. While I can assist you with your Chinese, I am also eager to enhance my English proficiency, particularly in conversational skills. I propose that we meet twice a week, with each session lasting for about an hour. This frequency should provide enough opportunity for practice without being too overwhelming.
I look forward to hearing from you and discussing the details of our language exchange. Thank you for considering my proposal.

【答案】参考范文:
She invited him inside, suggesting he take a rest before the rest of his workmates arrived. But Walter politely declined. He was there to work, and that’s exactly what he intended to do. When the rest of the moving team eventually showed up, they were equally impressed by Walter’s story. His determination to get to work against such difficulties had already set him apart as someone truly exceptional. Word of Walter’s story soon spread, reaching Luke Marklin, the CEO of Bellhops.
Moved by Walter’s story, the CEO Luke Marklin decided to meet with him personally. He wanted to recognize the young man’s incredible commitment and determination. During their meeting, Marklin commended Walter for his perseverance. Then, in a surprising and generous gesture, Marklin handed Walter the keys to his own personal vehicle, a 2014 SUV. “I’d like to give you this car right here,” Marklin said. Walter was stunned — the gift of a car was more than he could have imagined. His hard work and determination had not only paid off but had done so in a way that was beyond his wildest dreams. The story of Walter is a powerful reminder of what can happen when someone refuses to give up in the face of adversity.
