Possible Version:
Dear Mrs. Greenland,
How are you Hello from Li Hua. I am writing to thank you for your care during my stay in
Liverpool.
Everything is OK for me in China. With the new term approaching, I’m now busy preparing for
school. I never knew what to expect because it was my first time to be abroad alone. Luckily, you helped
me overcome homesickness, language barriers and culture shocks. The joyful moments, especially my
17th birthday party you prepared, will stick in my mind forever.
Thanks again! Attached are my gifts. Hopefully, you will like them.
Yours,
Li Hua
Possible Version:
“How about we exchange ” Coach Clark pointed at my lunch box, smiling. I lowered my head and
nodded. She quickly pressed a sandwich into my hand and reached for my taco. “Wow, Amazing! Try my
sandwich!” I took a small bite carefully. “Not bad.” I frowned and whispered. Coach Clarke laughed to
tears, “Forget it. Eat your taco instead.” As I chewed one and Coach Clarke the other, she kept praising
my taco. I knew everyone in the cafeteria could hear. I knew she did it on purpose.
Thanks to Clarke, after that day fewer kids laughed at me about my tacos. Instead, my mother’s
hand-made tacos became popular. Sometimes I invited Clark to have lunch together. One day as we
chatted over lunch, I told her how I wished to kick that mean girl. “Sofia, learn to defeat her in English,
math and everything, with your head.” That year I beat that girl in all subjects. What a blessing to meet
Clark, who was there in time to help me and taught me that my head was more powerful than my foot!

{#{QQABIQQAggCAAgAAABhCEwVgCAIQkgCACYgOQAAMMAABCQFABAA=}#}
Nov. 4 “The Cost of Bragging About Stress”
merely…but…
to doubt your competence”。
构成递进关系,选项 E中的“not just”与 “more troubling” 恰好构成递进关系,故 E项合乎题
Reader’s Digest “Let’s Say Yes!” Oct.24

“登机,上飞机”。
46.B. 解析: A. 尝试,品尝;B. 避免,回避;C. 制作(食物);D. 上菜,上饭。根据
作者提出的准则,作者自己面对以前不喜欢吃的食物,也得要说“Yes”,所以这里是指“以前

48. C. 解析:A.

52.C. 解析:A.

W:Well, good teachers excel at recognizing students’ issues and encouraging them to overcome
those issues.
M: I agree. I want to be a teacher like Mrs. March. I would try to find the students who need

video recently that stood out in the 100 Reasons to Love Beijing short video competition. “100
Reasons to Love Beijing is not just a short video competition but also a platform for sharing stories
and conveying emotions,” says Xu Hejian, director of the Beijing Information Office. After a final

Let’s explore the splendid botanic gardens of the world.
Royal Botanic Garden, London, England
The Royal Botanic Garden is thought to be the largest one in the world, a 121-hectare site on the
edge of London, home to the world’s biggest collection of living plants and more than 8.5 million
preserved plant specimens (标本 ). Its mission is to protect plants for the future of all life on Earth.
Designed by artist Wolfgang Buttress, it features a thousand LEDs that light up and create a musical
piece!
Jardim Botanico do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The garden stands as a symbol of Brazil’s rich diversity of wildlife, containing over 6,000 species
of tropical plants and trees. 40 percent of the site is farmed; the rest is Atlantic Forest spreading up the
mountains. It is home to Capuchin monkeys, along with over 140 species of birds, including toucans
and white-necked hawks.
Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier, France

Decades ago, my friend Caetlin received an unusual assignment from the poet Robert L. Hass, her
then undergraduate literature professor. He instructed each student to memorize at least ten poems—not
for any exam, he claimed, but to prepare them for their unavoidable future living alone. At some point,
Caetlin recalled him saying, “you’re going to be alone, and poetry is going to be all you have.”
The task was strange, because memorizing a poem feels curiously old-fashioned in an era when
few of us encounter poetry at all. When I was in graduate school, working toward a degree in English
literature, I mostly concentrated on prose (散文). It was only in my 40s that I began to change my ways.
It happened on a flight to Seattle. For hours, I read nothing but a poem. Sometimes I spoke its lines
aloud; sometimes I went through the whole poem, and sometimes I repeated a single part over and over,

and by the time my plane landed, I had all 40 lines in my head. The boredom of simple repetition
reduces the real charm a poem has. Thus, memorizing a great poem always feels like a crime. But as
you run your hands through the book, the lines at last come together again, and the text transforms back
into a treasure, often a more valuable one than it was before.
In other words, poetry comes down by becoming a part of those who read it. It can do so only
because it is so specific and entirely different from us, expanding our own sense of what we are when
we read poems.
Some of the poems I’ve memorized are already fading, and that’s fine. I know that if I spend a little
time with them, they’ll sing in me again. I won’t promise you that memorizing poetry will make your
life better, but it will make you more: more in touch with language, with other minds, maybe with what
you might yet become.
24.What did Robert L. Hass suggest students do
A. Write original poetry.
B. Study poetry for exams.
C. Read more classical prose works.
D. Memorize poems for future loneliness.
25.Why does the author say that memorizing a poem begins as a crime
A. It feels boring and outdated.
B. It takes away poems’ beauty.
C. It is difficult and requires a lot of time.
D. It is strange to read poems on the plane.
26. What can be inferred about the author’s relationship with poetry
A. The author prefers prose to poems.
B. The author shows no interest in poems.
C. The author finds value in memorizing poems.
D. The author memorizes poems to win an award.
27.What is the author’s attitude towards memorizing poetry in the last paragraph
A. Skeptical. B. Appreciative. C. Indifferent. D. Critical.

Automating (自动化) food is unlike automating anything else. Food is fundamental to life, so how
it’s accessed, prepared and consumed can change societies fundamentally. Automated kitchens aren’t
sci-fi visions from Star Trek. The technology is real and global. Right now, robots are used to fry
chicken, create pizzas, mix cocktails and much more. AI can invent recipes based on whatever a kitchen
has in store.
The benefits of AI kitchens include enabling chefs to be more creative, as well as removing
repetitive, boring tasks such as washing the dishes or standing for hours. Not having to cook means
being able to spend more time with family or focus on more urgent tasks. For personalized eating, AI
can provide countless special diets on demand.
However, there are also risks to human well-being. Cooking can be relaxing and provides
opportunities for many things: gratitude, creativity, communication, adventure, independence,
confidence and more, all of which may be lost if no one needs to cook. Family relationships could be
affected if parents and children are no longer working together in the kitchen—a safe space to chat, in
contrast to what can feel like an interrogation (盘问) at the dining table. The kitchen is also the science
lab of the home, so science education could suffer.
Can food technology really change society Yes, just consider the significant impact of the
microwave oven (微波炉). With that technology, it was suddenly possible to make a quick meal for just
one person, which can be a benefit but also a social destroyer. Concerns about the technology include
worse nutrition and health risks. Less obviously, that convenience can also transform eating from a
collective, cultural and creative event into a practical act of survival.
Instead of working at your desk over a reheated lunch, you might have to walk out and talk to
people, as well as enjoy a break from work. There’s something to be said for living more slowly in a
society that’s increasingly busy and socially isolated.
28.What can we learn about AI cooking in paragraph 3
A. AI cooking could benefit human health.
B. Science education could be negatively affected.
C. Creativity and independence could be developed.
D. AI cooking could promote parent-child relationship.

30.What does the author suggest people do in modern society
A. Walk out for longer hours. B. Rely heavily on AI kitchens.

About one in 10 people worldwide die from stroke (中风), the third leading cause of death globally
after heart disease and COVID-19. The number of people who have had a stroke has been rising in the
U.S. and worldwide. While stroke victims are living longer and surviving more than such victims before,
they’re also getting younger.
A new study in the Lancet Neurology reveals more people worldwide are surviving after a stroke,
with no increases and even some decreases in strokes among adults over 70—but increases in strokes in
younger adults, particularly those under 55.
Among more than 5.2 million adults surveyed in the May CDC report from 2011-2022, those with
a stroke increased from 2.7 percent in 2011-2013 to 2.9 percent in 2020-2022. Although older age is a
known risk factor for stroke, prevalence (患病率) did not actually go up in adults aged 65 and older.
The age group with the largest growth was 45 to 64, accounting for a 16 percent increase. Among
adults aged 18-44, stroke occurrence also rose by a relative 15 percent. In plain terms, younger adults
still make up a very small proportion of overall strokes, but rates are climbing quickly in these younger
groups with no increases seen in older adults.

Growing risk factors range from climbing rates of obesity (肥胖 ) to hotter temperatures from
climate change, but the single biggest risk factor is the same across every region in the world: high
blood pressure, responsible for a little over half of all strokes, the Lancet study found. Fortunately, of all
the risk factors for stroke, hypertension is also one of the easiest to monitor and change. A healthy blood
pressure is anything below 120/80, which can be achieved through both lifestyle changes and
medicines.
Richard Temes, a neurologist at Northwell Health in New York, says the first step for individuals is
understanding their risk, whether from lifestyle or family history. Changing one aspect of lifestyle can
have a chain effect.
32.What can be known from Paragraph 1
A. COVID-19 is the deadliest disease globally.
B. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the U.S.
C. There is a tendency for younger adults to develop stroke.
D. People suffering from stroke live longer than those who don’t.
33.How are Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4 developed
A. By listing relevant figures.
B. By explaining cause and effect.
C. By providing supporting reasons.
D. By comparing the similarities and differences.
34.What does the underlined word “hypertension” mean in paragraph 5
A. Mental pressure. B. Body temperature.
C. High blood pressure. D. Heart disease.
35.Which could serve as the best title for this text
A. Stroke: A Disease on the Rise
B. Stroke: AYounger Trend Worldwide
C. Healthy Lifestyle: Key Factor to Avoid Stroke

In many workplaces, it’s not unusual to hear people talk about how stressed they are. 36
When they tell you they’re too busy or stressed, they are often signaling they’re very important, in high
demand, and irreplaceable to their teams or business units.
In a recent study, researchers coined this behavior as “stress bragging (吹嘘)”. This term perfectly
reflects the double functions of this form of communication. 37 Stress bragging allows
individuals to highlight their importance while hiding it in a coat of vulnerability (脆弱).
Yet, while stress bragging might offer a short-term boost to one’s image, it has far-reaching
negative consequences not only for the people bragging but also for others. Bragging about stress
signals to others that you might be having difficulty managing your responsibilities. 38
Moreover, while expressing stress could theoretically arouse sympathy, bragging about it can make you
seem self-centered.
39 Perhaps more troubling, it spills over to affect those around them. When people hear
others bragging about their stress, their own levels of stress can increase as well. This is known as the
stress infection effect and occurs when you are observing someone else’s stress and it causes a similar
emotional response in you.
So, if stress bragging is so harmful, why are we never bored to do it The answer lies in the
complex relationship between self-promotion and vulnerability. Stress bragging is a way to show one’s
devotion and importance without leaving a bad impression of self-importance. 40
A. This, in turn, can lead others to doubt your competence.
B. They are conveying a desire for help with their stressful work.
C. It’s not merely a cry for help but bears a touch of self-promotion.
D. This is because it makes your stress seem far more vital than others’.
E. Stress bragging doesn’t just negatively affect the people engaging in it.
F. For some, it’s a way to highlight their contributions to the organization.
G. Only by managing stress well can we create more supportive workplaces.

“Kick” that girl with head
Mama used to pack two tacos(墨西哥玉米卷) for my school lunch each day. But each morning I
would say, “Mama, can I please have some lunch money or a sandwich instead ” The reply was always
the same: “Why You already have these yummy tacos.”
It wasn’t that the tacos weren’t good; it was that some kids called Mexican Americans beaners, so
the last thing I needed was to stand out like a big stupid sign. I started going to the very end of the
cafeteria, to turn my back, wolf down my tacos in three minutes and then run out.
On a cold winter day, I started eating my second taco rather slowly. “Hey, you! What’s that ” A
towering girl pointed at the bag ill-intentionally with her fat finger. I was shocked. She grabbed the bag
from my hand. “Taco head!” She yelled. In seconds I was surrounded by kids shouting “Taco head!
Taco head!” I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me whole. Worse still, my taco flew open and
spilt all over my white sweater. I wanted to kick her hard, but I dare not. This nightmare went on until
Coach Clarke, the girls’ PE teacher, stopped them and ordered everybody back to their seats. “Sofia,”
she said, “don’t pay attention to them. They’re just mean and silly.” She took me to the teachers’ room
and helped me clean up.
The next morning, Coach Clarke stopped me in the hall. “Sofia, how about we eating lunch
together in the cafeteria ” I nodded, not knowing how to refuse such a kindness. When the lunch bell
rang, I found Coach Clarke sitting in the middle of the cafeteria. She looked up and waved me over.
“Here, Sofia,” she pulled out the chair beside her. “I was saving this chair for you.” I sat down, feeling
sick, nervous.
