Stand Up and Exercise,Everybody!
For an active school day, it's essential to exercise between classes. And what I recommend is an
effective sport: jumping jacks.
To do a jumping jack, you have to jump to a position with the legs spread wide and the hands
touching overhead, then return to a pose with the feet together and the arms at the sides. It is a simple
and fantastic way to get the heart pumping and the muscles moving.
So, let's all stand up and add some jumping jacks to our break times!

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I won first prize! On
hearing such unexpected news, I froze.I could feel the heart pounding in my chest. Did I really make
it Never in my life did I expect to take the lead in an English writing contest! A few days later,
striding onto the podium of the award presentation with my chest puffing out in pride, I couldn't
conceal my smile. After receiving my prize, I nodded to everyone in thanks. Wild cheers and
thunderous applause erupted from the audience.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. Seeing my coming, my teacher raised
his head, gave me a thumbs up and praised, “Well done!” I could sense a flash of delight in his eyes.
Tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes, I couldn't help hugging my teacher tightly, crying,“Without
your encouragement and support, I couldn't have won the prize!” “No, you deserve it, for your
efforts and perseverance like Revere's fabled horse. Keep in mind that be brave to pursue your
dreams and never give up!”my teacher replied. It was my teacher's words that enabled me to
approach my own talent and gain confidence.

【原文】The education system in Australia consists of a total of 12 years. Primary schools and high
schools are based on the age of the student, so that every room has the same age group, with a
student hardly ever having to repeat a year. The students with problems in their studies may be put
into special classes. Most of the children start primary school at the age of 5. Then the student goes
for secondary school at the age of 12 or 13. Well, the subject of the education system is too broad.
Today I’d like to focus on the school system in Australia. The school system in Australia does
3
depend on whether you go to a private or a public school. In the state, there are a lot of private
schools, and generally they’re single-sex high schools. The public high schools are generally mixed.
All of the private high schools insist that you wear their school uniforms, and that might mean a
school tie and a school jacket. However, the public high schools often give you a choice of whether
you want to wear a uniform or not. The school classes generally start anywhere between 8: 30 and 9
o’clock in the morning, and run until 3: 30 in the afternoon, and they’re followed by after-school
activities like sports and music and theater. The school year generally starts in the beginning of
February, after the summer vacation. The summer vacation lasts about six weeks, and it’s around the
Christmas period.

Wang Fang, a Suzhou native, has given her heart and soul to Kunqu Opera. Wang, who has twice won the Plum Performance Award — China’s top award for theater and opera performances — started to learn the traditional art form in 1977.
Born with a melodic voice, Wang loved to sing and dance when she was little. She performed frequently, and was recruited by the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe(剧团)when she was in middle school. However, her parents refused the troupe’s invitation, insisting that she should concentrate on her studies and not drop out of school. After members of the troupe visited the parents repeatedly and showed great sincerity, Wang’s parents finally agreed.
Learning the traditional art form was never easy. She started to learn how to pronounce words, sing them lyrically and make gestures gently. As an actress playing martial artists roles at first, she had to spend extra time practicing kung fu movements. Years later, Wang used the word “unimaginable” to describe how hard the days were when she first learned Kunqu. She was soaked in sweat when practicing movements in summer, while in winter she often had chilblains(冻疮)on her hands when training in shabby classrooms with broken windows. “But I was young and determined at the time. No matter how difficult, I always got up early the next morning to practice,” Wang recalls.
Wang says she did not love Kunqu at first, but in her early 20s, when she watched the show Peony Pavilion performed by Zhang Jiqing, a master of the art form, it clicked. “I was shocked,” Wang says. “Her every movement was full of elegance and delicacy. Each of her lines and songs was perfect. I was overwhelmed(难以禁受)by the beauty of Kunqu for the first time in my life, and it has stayed with me since.” Now, Wang has herself become a master of Kunqu. Her performances have impressed generations of audiences and helped to promote the art form among young people.
24. Why did Wang’s parents turn down the troupe’s invitation at first
A. They didn’t think Wang had artistic talent.
B. They saw no future in learning Kunqu Opera.
C. They didn’t want Wang to ignore her studies.
D. They regarded members of the troupe as insincere.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us
A. Wang has made great efforts to learn Kunqu well.
B. Artists should be given more attention and care.
C. Traditional culture needs to be further promoted.
D. Wang has played a key role in the development of Kunqu.
26. What changed Wang’s attitude towards Kunqu Opera
A. Winning the Plum Performance Award. B. Joining the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe.
C. Watching Zhang’s masterly performance. D. Being greatly admired by the audiences.
27. What does Wang’s story show us
A. It is never too late to learn. B. Rome was not built in a day.
C. Doing is better than saying. D. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

What comes into your mind when you think of British food Probably fish and chips, or a Sunday dinner of meat and two vegetables. But is British food really so uninteresting Even though Britain has a reputation for less-than-impressive cuisine(菜肴), it is producing more top class chefs (主厨)who appear frequently on our television screens and whose recipe books frequently top the best seller lists.
It’s thanks to these TV chefs rather than any advertising campaign(广告宣传活动) that Britons are turning away from meat-and-two-veg and ready-made meals and becoming more adventurous in their cooking habits. It is recently reported that the number of those sticking to a traditional diet is slowly declining and around half of Britain’s consumers would like to change or improve their cooking in some way. There has been a rise in the number of students applying for food courses at UK universities and colleges. It seems that TV programmes have helped change what people think about cooking.
According to a new study from market analysts, 1 in 5 Britons say that watching cookery programmes on TV has encouraged them to try different food. Almost one third say they now use a wider variety of ingredients (配料) than they used to, and just under 1 in 4 say they now buy better quality ingredients than before. One in four adults say that TV chefs have made them much more confident about expanding their cookery knowledge and skills, and young people are also getting more interested in cooking. The UK’s obsession (痴迷) with food is reflected through television scheduling. Cookery shows and documentaries about food are broadcast more often than before. With an increasing number of male chefs on TV, it’s no longer “uncool” for boys to like cooking.
28. What do people usually think of British food
A. It is simple and plain. B. It is rich in nutrition.
C. It lacks authentic tastes. D. It deserves a high reputation.
29. Which best describes cookery programmes on British TV
A. Authoritative. B. Creative. C. Profitable. D. Influential.
30. Which is the percentage of the people using more various ingredients now
A. 20%. B. 24%. C. 25%. D. 33%.
31. What might the author continue talking about
A. The art of cooking in other countries.
B. Male chefs on TV programmes.
C. Table manners in the UK.
D. Studies of big eaters.
D
The world’s animal populations have decreased by more than two-thirds since 1970, according to a recent research from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The London group provided information on 32,000 wildlife populations which included more than 5,000 species(物种). The researchers found that population sizes had declined by 69 percent on average. They said the loss of forests, human exploitation(开发)of the environment, pollution, and climate change were great causes of the loss. Land-use change is still the biggest threat to wildlife. However, the researchers added, “if we cannot limit warming to 1.5°C, climate change is likely to become the dominant cause of biodiversity loss in the coming years.”
Wildlife populations in Latin American and the Caribbean Sea area were greatly affected. The research showed a 94 percent drop in those areas in over 50 years. Wildlife populations in river and lake habitats decreased the most. Freshwater populations have declined by an average of 83 percent since 1970. For example, one population of pink river dolphins in the Amazon River area of Brazil fell by 65 percent between 1994 and 2016.
These findings are a red flag that warns of a larger system failure on the horizon. Even one species’ population decline can affect other species, eventually impacting the ecosystem’s ability to function. Humans depend on a stable climate, predictable weather patterns, and productive farmland and fisheries to thrive(蓬勃发展), but the current trends are severe enough to threaten many life-sustaining systems.
Our future depends on reversing(扭转)the loss of nature just as much as it depends on addressing climate change. And you can’t solve one without solving the other. Everyone has a role in reversing these trends, from individuals to companies to governments. If nothing changes, animal populations will undoubtedly continue to fall, driving wildlife to extinction and threatening the integrity of the ecosystems on which we all depend.
32.What is the greatest threat to wildlife populations currently
A. Illegal hunting. B. Land-use change.
C. Global warming. D. Environmental pollution.
33. How does the author explain the decline of freshwater wildlife in paragraph 3
A. By listing figures. B. By analyzing the causes.
C. By making a comparison. D. By referring to a concept.
34. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. Climate change threatens many wild animals.
B. Farmland is the basis of life-sustaining systems.
C. Species diversity is important to maintain a stable ecosystem.
D. Extreme weather events have become more frequent.
35. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To explain the difficulty of restoring ecosystems.
B. To show people’s efforts in reversing the loss of nature.
C. To present the increasing trend of climate change.
D. To call on people to take action to protect nature.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
With gas prices rising and airport security lines snaking longer than ever, why not book your next domestic vacation on a train Compared to other alternatives, it’s comfortable and relaxing. Here is some advice on how to make a trip by rail as pleasant as possible.
Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very quickly. 36 But no matter when you travel, it’s a good idea to make your reservations at least 90 days in advance.
Use a travel agent. Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel agent and letting him double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations. A good one can sometimes find you discounted(打折) tickets. 37 Then you won’t have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.
Bring a blanket. When you’re riding on trains, you won’t be provided with a blanket(毯子) for free, even if your trip is an overnight one. 38 In the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make them quite cold.
Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only three times a week, so missing yours can be a disaster. 39 Note: The times listed on the schedules are departure times, not arrival times.
Have fun. 40 Read a book, knit, do a crossword puzzle, or simply watch the world unfold outside the window. To calculate your speed as you do, divide 3,600 (the number of seconds in an hour) by the number of seconds it takes you to travel one mile (the distance between two mileposts). If it takes the train 53 seconds to travel one mile, you’re going 67.92 mph.
A. Train trips aren’t for impatient types.
B. You’ll have views from both sides of the train.
C. The temperature on rail cars is often hard to control.
D. That’s particularly true during busy summer months.
E. You might have to wait longer than 24 hours to catch the next one.
F. Chances are the cost will be a lot less than the cost of one bedroom.
G. He may also book you in a sleeping car that’s right next to the diner.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot(有机会成功)at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.
