I was standing in the checkout line behind a woman who seemed to be in her 60s.When it was her turn to pay,the cashier greeted her by name and asked her how she was doing.
The woman looked down, shook her head and said,“Not so good.My husband just lost his job and my son is up to his old tricks again. The truth is,I don’t know how I’m going to get through the holidays.” Then she gave the cashier food stamps(食品券).
Neither did I know how I could get through the days a year ago during my fresh year in the company.I didn’t know the rules,I was not familiar with the work, and I couldn’t feel the value of myself.I was even wondering whether I could get along,as my father was gone,my mother had no work and my brother was only 7.That feeling was exactly what the woman had said.Fortunately, things changed when I received my colleague’s card, from which I felt the encouragement, and sensed happiness falling upon me again.
So I really wanted to help but didn’t know how.Should I offer to pay for her groceries,or ask for her husband’s r?sum?(简历) As I walked into the parking lot,I spotted the woman returning her shopping cart.Suddenly I remembered something in my purse that I thought could help her.It wasn’t a handful of cash or an offer of a job for her husband, but maybe it would make her life better.
Then I approached the woman. My heart pounded as this was the first time that I had come with the idea to help a stranger.
“Excuse me,” I said,my voice trembling a bit.“I couldn’t help accidentally hearing what you said to the cashier. It sounds like you’re going through a really hard time right now.I’m so sorry.I’d like to give you something.”
I handed her the small card from my purse.

Linda,a high school girl, was feeling depressed after she had failed her mid-term exams. She didn’t answer her teachers’ questions actively in class like she used to.Instead, she began to lower her head and got absent-minded easily. Her friends and classmates were worried about her,but she didn’t feel like talking about it with them.Mrs Green, her English teacher, noticed her changes and decided to do something before it got worse.
One day,Mrs Green entered the classroom and asked her students to prepare for a surprise test. They waited anxiously at their desks for the test to begin.Mrs Green handed out the question papers, with the text facing down as usual. After she handed them all out,she asked her students to turn the page and begin. To everyone’s surprise, there were no questions, just a black dot in the center of the page.Mrs Green, seeing the expression on everyone’s face, told them the following:
“I want you to write what you see there.”
The students, confused, got started on the task.
At the end of the class,Mrs Green collected all the answer papers and started reading them aloud in front of all the students.Just as Mrs Green had expected, with no exception, all of them described the black dot, trying to explain its position in the middle of the sheet, etc.Mrs Green then picked out Linda’s paper and added,
“Linda,I like your idea.Would you please follow me to the office and talk about it?”

Unfortunately, her roommate,Zara, heard her crying. As soon as Jenny hung up the call,Zara started making fun of her.“Does baby miss her mommy in Phoenix?” Jenny wiped her tears and asked Zara whether she missed her parents and longed to go home.Zara replied coldly that she had put away such childish things and warned that she shouldn’t have behaved like a crybaby.Soon everyone in the dorm started calling Jenny “Crybaby”.The idea of quitting college and running home constantly occurred to Jenny. But somehow, she made it through.
One day,her dad called and asked her to come home for a long weekend. In the end,her father added that she could bring her roommate Zara home and he would soon send two return tickets.Jenny had never told her parents that Zara was far from friendly or supportive. She’d been too ashamed and eager to hide her complete misery(痛苦) from her family.

A 12-year-old boy saw something in a shop window that set his heart racing. It was a jewel box.But the price—five dollars—was far beyond Reuben Earle’s means. However,he opened the door and went inside.Standing proud and straight,he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding,“But I don’t have the money right now.Could you please hold it for me for some time?”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled.
“I will raise the five dollars and not tell anybody,” Reuben said to himself.
Hearing the sound of hammering from a side street,Reuben had an idea.People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails purchased in sacks (麻布袋) from a local factory.Sometimes the sacks were abandoned, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he found two sacks and sold to the man in charge of packing nails.
The boy’s hand tightly held the five-cent pieces as he ran home.Near his house stood the ancient barn(谷仓).Reuben found a soda tin and dropped his coins inside. Then he climbed into the top of the barn and hid the tin.
All summer long, despite housework at home,Reuben kept to his secret task.Often he was cold, tired and hungry, but the thought of the object in the shop window sustained(支撑) him.
Mother’s Day had come! He uncovered the tin can, poured the coins out and began to count. He needed 20 cents more.He had to find four more sacks and sell them before the day ended.
Towards evening Reuben arrived at the factory. The sack buyer was about to lock up.

He was anxiously waiting for the bus.Moments later, the bus pulled over, and Jake hopped in,assuming it was just going to be an ordinary ride to school.“Luckily,Mom gave me $6.Otherwise I’d have to walk all the way to school,” he thought.
The bus came to a stop, picking up Christel,a 56-year-old woman from the next stop. She was smelly and looked dirty. Some passengers frowned at her,but she was least bothered about them.Moments later, she trembled through the crowd toward an empty seat next to Jake.
“Ticket, please?!” the conductor said loudly, staring at her.Christel’s face slowly started to go red.“One second,I’m looking for my purse,” she replied.“I...uh...I don’t have money.I forgot to bring my purse,” Christel stammered(结结巴巴地说),embarrassed.
“Lady, this is not a charity ride that picks up beggars for free.I’m stopping the bus right now.Get out!” yelled the conductor as the crowd of passengers turned toward Christel all at once.
Jake witnessed everything and was disappointed at how the conductor treated the poor woman. Then he remembered he still had some change.“Here is your $3...Give her a ticket,” he said to the conductor, throwing the money into his hand.
“Thank you, sweetheart.I am forever grateful to you! What is your name, dear?” said Christel.
“I’m Jake. That’s okay.I just did what I should do,” replied Jake, taking Christel’s words of gratitude casually.
They talked about Jake’s school life.“I want to become a baseball player, but my school does not have such facilities.I don’t want to trouble my mom. She’s already working hard in the restaurant. My father passed away in an accident two years ago,” revealed Jake.

As I gathered my things,Liya passed my desk and said,“Teammates?” Since Liya and I shared the same interest in graphic novel(漫画小说),and we took Hindi language class together,we teamed up automatically.I was both relieved and excited to have my team. Then we got to the cafeteria and quickly threw out a bunch of ideas of what to do at our table.
I looked to our third friend Kash, with whom the three of us always do stuff together,“Kash,do you have ideas for us?” “Why would I give you guys ideas?” he said gloomily(阴沉地).“I’ll save that for my team...whoever that is.Now I see how I rank in the friendship lineup.” Kash replied in an angry tone.
I knew he was mad for a reason. If I were him,not only would I think that I ranked last in that group, but I’d also be panicking about what team I could join. But now,I was on the inside and Kash wasn’t.I felt like the only way to fix this would be three people on a team. So,as the teacher walked by our table,I asked for her permission. What surprised me was that she had intended to draw names to assign random groups, but didn’t get a chance to say it before lunch.
Awkward and frustrated,we were stuck in this dilemma.Having first teamed up without Kash didn’t mean we didn’t like him.I knew we—especially I—wouldn’t be able to enjoy any prize if our friend felt bad about being left out. So,I decided to do something to make it up for him and convince Kash he was an equal friend.

One spring morning many years ago,I had been searching for gold along Coho Creek on southeastern Alaska’s Kuprean of Island, and as I emerged from a forest of spruce(云杉) and hemlock tree,I froze in my tracks. No more than 20 paces in the bog(沼泽) was a huge Alaskan timber wolf—caught in one of Trapper George’s traps.
Old George had died the previous week of a heart attack,so the wolf was lucky.Confused and frightened at my approach, the wolf backed away. Then I noticed something else: It was a female, and her teats were full of milk.Somewhere there was a den of hungry pups(小狼) waiting for their mother.
From her appearance,I guessed that she had been trapped only a few days. That meant her pups were probably still alive. But I suspected that if I tried to release the wolf, she would turn aggressive and try to tear me to pieces.
So I decided to search for her pups instead and began to look for tracks that might lead me to her den.Fortunately, there were still a few remaining patches of snow. After several moments,I spotted pups’ marks on a trail.
The tracks led a half mile through the forest, then up a slope covered with many rocks.I finally spotted the den at the base of an enormous spruce. There wasn’t a sound inside.Wolf pups are shy and cautious, and I didn’t have much hope of inviting them outside, but I had to try.So I began imitating the high-pitched(声音很尖锐的) sound of a mother wolf calling her young. No response.A few moments later, after I tried another call, four tiny pups appeared. They couldn’t have been more than a few weeks old.

I was in about 40 feet of water all by myself.I knew I should not have gone alone, but I was rather competent and just took a chance. There was not much current, and the water was so warm, clear and attractive. When I got a cramp(抽筋),I realized at once how foolish I was.I was not too alarmed, but was completely doubled up with stomach cramps.I tried to remove my weight belt, but I was so doubled up that I could not get to the catch.I was sinking and began to feel more frightened, unable to move.I could see my watch and knew there was only a little more time on the oxygen tank before I would be out of air.I tried to massage(按摩) my stomach.I wasn’t wearing a wet suit, but couldn’t straighten out and couldn’t get to the cramped muscles with my hands.I thought,“I can’t go like this! I have things to do!” I just couldn’t die this way with no one to even know what happened to me.I called out in my mind,“Somebody, something, help me!”
I was not prepared for what happened.Suddenly I felt a push from behind me under the arm.I thought,“Oh no,sharks!” I felt real fear and desperation. But my arm was being lifted forcefully.Around into my field of vision came an eye—the most extraordinary eye I could ever imagine. It was smiling. It was the eye of a big dolphin.Looking into that eye,I knew I was safe.I was flooded with relief.I felt that the animal was comforting me as well as lifting me toward the surface. My stomach cramps went away and I relaxed with security.
At the surface it drew me all the way into shore. It took me into water so shallow that I began to be concerned that it might be beached, and I pushed it back a little deeper, where it waited, watching me,I guess to see if I was all right.

“What will we be singing for the contest this year?” a student from my high school choir asked eagerly.
I panicked this moment.“I was thinking,” I said,“maybe we’ll skip the contest and just work hard on the concerts this year.”
“NO!” the kids protested.
“We’ve got to go to the contest!”
“In Class A.”
“It’s a tradition!”
This was true.Medals lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But my section leaders had graduated or been forced to drop music classes, leaving me with young, inexperienced kids who couldn’t read music, couldn’t hold their parts, and could sing only some simple songs.
“Maybe we could enter Class B this year,” I suggested, knowing even that would be a near-impossible mission.“No!” the kids screamed.“Class A!”
I shook my head.“Class A is extremely difficult.”
“We can do it!” they shouted.“We can do it!”
“I’ll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a couple of weeks.
But that didn’t happen.Every day they begged;they pleaded;they insisted.Because I had to protect their self-esteem,I couldn’t tell them they weren’t good enough.
I struggled to make a decision. If I crushed their hope, would I crush their spirit On the other hand,if we entered Class A,would they be hurt by the judges’ comments Finally, one morning I stormed into class and declared we would sing for the contest and entered Class A.
Each morning they vocalized, learned musical terms, practiced signature changes, rehearsed concert music, and went over and over the songs.Their progress was so remarkable that even I began believing in their dream.

Alexander sang all the time.He sang in the shower,he sang while he did his homework, and he sang while he walked to school. He simply loved singing. One day during a break,he heard Kevin talking about the tryouts(选拔) for the City Choir(合唱团).
“Yeah,I’m attending the tryouts this weekend,” Kevin announced.“With my voice,I’m pretty much guaranteed a spot.I don’t even need any practice as I am so talented.Imagine they’ll want me to perform lots of solos(独唱),too.”
Everyone knew that Kevin had a fantastic singing voice.Normally,Alexander just ignored him,but he couldn’t help imagining himself as a member of the choir.Wouldn’t it be fun,he thought,to sing with other kids every day and have someone actually teach him about singing
On the tryout day,Alexander took a deep breath, walked into the building, registered at a large table, and then waited nervously in the hallway. The only one who didn’t look nervous was Kevin. And why should he be He has performed as a soloist many times.Alexander,on the other hand, had never taken a musical lesson in his life;much less had he performed for an audience.
After a while, the choir director,Mr Robeson, walked in and told the kids that they were to sing a song individually, sing as a group and answer some questions.Soon the individual test began. When Alexander stood on the stage,he tried to calm down and pretended he was singing in the shower. He felt satisfied when he was done,at least until Kevin’s turn came.As Kevin’s confident voice filled the room,Alexander realized that he would never sound that good.
Next,Mr Robeson put the kids into groups of four or five and asked them to sing together.Kevin’s group sang right before Alexander’s,and even with four other boys singing,Kevin’s voice was clear and distinct; it seemed to reach the farthest corners of the room.

Pam Bales left her car and stepped onto the snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire’s Mount Washington State Park. The hike up the lower part of Jewell was pleasant. At 8:30 am,still below the tree line, she took the first in a series of on-the-trail selfies.
Less than an hour later, she took another photo, after she’d climbed into colder air and deeper snows. She made her way across the snow-covered ridge toward Mount Washington. Then she noticed something:a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her. She’d been following faint tracks all day and hadn’t given them much thought, because so many people climb Jewell Trail. But these, she realized, had been made by a pair of trainers, not suitable for hiking on snow.
By 11 am,Bales was getting cold and decided to abandon her plan. The only thing to keep Bales on Gulfside Trail was the trainer tracks in the snow.As she fought the wind and heavy sleet(雨夹雪),the tracks made a hard left-hand turn off the trail.
Now she alarmed. She was sure the hiker could get through in the low visibility and was heading straight toward the challenging trails of the Great Gulf Wilderness.Bales stood there, stunned. The temperature and clouds were in a race to find their lowest point, and darkness was mere hours away. She turned to the left and called out,“Hello!” into the frozen fog.
Nothing. She called out again:“Is anybody out there Do you need help?”
The strong westerly winds carried her voice away. She blew into her rescue whistle. For a fleeting moment she thought she heard someone reply, but it was just the wind playing games with her mind. She stood listening, then turned and walked cautiously in the direction of the single set of tracks.Bales followed the tracks cautiously for 20 to 30 meters. She rounded a slight corner and saw a man sitting motionless.

One day,my father,my mother and I were on our way to Hubble’s store on the Main Street to get those things needed for the upcoming Christmas. As we passed Eaton’s department store,we stopped as usual to do a bit of window shopping.
“What a silly dress!” my mother suddenly pointed to a dress in the fancy window.“Who would need such a big red dress?”
Then, totally out of character,Father went to Mother and started dancing on the sidewalk as if they were at a dancing party.
“Dear,it is for dancing parties,” my father laughed.“I hope I could buy it for you as a Christmas gift.”
“Oh,stop that!” she ordered and her cheeks became redder than usual.Mother,of all people, was not the one to spend money on things that were not practical.“There are things we need more than this.”
As we continued down the street,Mother turned back many times.“My goodness! They should show something a person really needs!”
But my father liked buying something that my mother might not really need, whenever the budget allowed.Of course,he’d get a scolding, but it was all done with the best intention.
Like the time he brought home the electric stove years ago.In our old kitchen,Mother was still cooking year-round on a wooden stove. In summer, the kitchen would be so hot that even the houseflies wouldn’t come inside. One day,Dad surprised her with a fancy new electric stove. She protested, saying that the wooden stove cooked just fine, that the electric stove was too dear and that it would cost too much to run it.Since then she only used it on special occasions.
On Christmas Eve,we drove past the store again and found that the big red dress was gone!
“Who’d be fool enough to buy such a big red dress?” Mother whispered in disbelief as we drove away.

Friend or Foe
Last year,at day camp,my friend Ollie and I were on the same obstacle course(障碍赛) team and had a great time. This year,Scotty, the captain of Team Panda, insisted we pick sticks to decide which team we belonged to.
At the beginning,we just wished we’d be on the same team again. But to our disappointment,Ollie had picked a short stick for Team Grizzly, while I had a long stick for Team Panda. My heart sank as something were definitely going to be different.
We all played a name game together, and then were divided into two groups to make team flags.“Could you please pass that paint?” asked a boy named Ben,“We’re going to destroy the Grizzlies! Right,Arizona?”
“But Ollie,my best friend,is in Grizzly. How come I destroy him?” I asked myself shyly.
Then at lunchtime,I planned to sit with Ollie at the same table as last year, cracking each other up the way good friends do.“What are you doing Having lunch with our enemy is not OK!!!” claimed a girl in my team.Only then did I realize there was an invisible dividing line. All of the Grizzlies sat together, and all of the Pandas sat together.I had no other alternative but to say goodbye to Ollie and concentrate on my lunch.
That night I hardly fell asleep.Ben’s voice was saying “Destroy the Grizzlies!” on repeat.I was wondering if being a good team member meant I was supposed to put my friendship with Ollie aside. One of my best friends was a Grizzly, and it just didn’t seem fun to treat him as an enemy.
I woke up with zero energy for our first competition the next morning. We each had two tries to race through an obstacle course. My first try was a disaster! I did OK with the monkey bars, the tunnel, and the slide. But when I did the rope swing over the sandpit(沙坑),I went too slow and got stuck in the middle.I felt pretty frustrated.

Throughout life,we come across many people who impact us in a way.Their impact can be for a day or for a lifetime. It’s common not to recognize the impact someone has left on you until a certain moment. The person who left a great impact on me is my dad.
Three months after turning fourteen,my life was great.I was getting settled into a high school; my grades were already starting off greatly and I was making friends.
One day as I came home from school,I walked into the living room, finding my mom and dad talking. My parents turned to me and told me to sit down because there was something important they had to tell me.I soon found out that my dad’s liver was failing and that he needed an immediate transplant.I was shocked and confused because my dad seemed fine.He was working and never looked sick.My parents told me not to worry because everything would be fine.Four months had passed and my dad still had not received a new liver; he was progressively getting worse. His body seemed to be getting weaker, but he constantly said he was fine.
It was getting hard for my family and me.My dad had to quit his job, leaving my mom to be the only provider.I had to take on the responsibility of cleaning the house, cooking meals and checking on my dad while my mom was at work.I had to cut back on hanging with my friends because my dad was beginning to go in and out of the hospital. My focus for school was starting to slip.So were my grades. Two nights before my school spring break,my mom received a call from the hospital that my dad had been in a car accident and that he was in hospital.Surprisingly,my dad hadn’t received a scratch on him. Then next night my mom received a call from the doctor stating that there was a liver that matched my dad’s body and that he needed to get to the hospital immediately.

One of the most difficult realities about the teaching profession is that we seldom know if we have made a difference. When I become discouraged about my job,my students or myself,I often think back to one particular day of my teaching career.
My first year of teaching was almost over.I taught junior English at Milford High School on a one-year contract.I had a bright group of students and I was grateful for that. However,as the end of the school year drew to a close,my students continually asked if the regular teacher would return.I tried to respond with little emotion.Deep down, though,I was more bothered by leaving than I admitted.
Finally, the day came to give my last lesson.I passed the office before the bell rang and saw a couple of the students from my class, and I thought how difficult saying goodbye would be.They were a group with whom I could joke, have fun and share ideas.Teaching them was a pleasure, and we all had learned a lot that year. But,as successful students do,they were moving on to the twelfth grade, and I doubted whether they would remember much about me after a few more years of their academic careers and busy lives.
Just about this time I was on hall duty outside my classroom, and I noticed the crowds thin out and classroom doors shut.I looked in my room to find only two students in attendance. When I commented that it was awfully strange that their classmates were so late, they agreed and then quickly asked to get a drink outside. The hallway was awfully quiet.I walked down the hall several times to see if anyone was coming.Suddenly,I heard footsteps coming down the hall.I was annoyed that after such a great year with these kids,I would—on their last day with me—have to give them a lecture about responsibility.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
I sighed and then observed them coming peacefully towards me with something in their hands.
I stood alone outside my classroom with the roses, thinking about their touching words on the cards.
