Dolphins seem to make open-mouthed facial expressions most often while they are visible to a playmate, suggesting such displays may be similar to human smiles.
While we often regard these as a smile, there has been little research on facial communication in dolphins.
To find out more, Elisabetta Palagi at the University of Pisa, Italy, and her colleagues analyzed the behaviour of 22 bottlenose dolphins at two wildlife parks in Italy and France.
In 80 hours of observation, the team noticed a total of 1288 open-mouthed expressions during social play sessions. More than 90 per cent of these events occurred during play between dolphins, with the rest happening during interactions between the dolphins and people.
The animals were more likely to assume the open-mouth expression when their face was within the playmate’s field of view-89 per cent were displayed in this context. When the playmate saw the “smile”, they appeared to smile back 33 per cent of the time.
Palagi says the study can’t say conclusively whether it is comparable with smiling in humans. “We do not claim to clarify dolphin communication strategies during play with a single piece of research. However, we hope to open a new line of research in which the visual component is also taken into consideration.”
Luciana Moller at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, says open-mouthed behaviour in dolphins occurs in a range of contexts, including aggressive and social interactions. This means it is a very versatile(多功能的) signal, so it can’t necessarily be interpreted as a smile.
She points out that making sounds might have been a factor in the dolphins opening their mouths, but the study didn’t look at any related recordings.
28. Why does Palagi analyze the dolphins’ behaviour
A. To prove humans’ assumptions. B. To explore how dolphins kill time.
C. To study dolphins’ facial expressions. D. To find out the facial features of dolphins.
29. According to the data in the text, a dolphin’s open-mouth expression might be .
A. a sign of playfulness B. a sense of cooperation
C. an intention to take action D. a way to show unhappiness

A. Optimistic. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Curious.
31. Where can readers most probably read the text
A. In a coursebook. B. In Breaking News online.

Think back to the last time you wrote down a quick note or made a grocery list. Chances are, it wasn’t with pen and paper. Over the past decade, keyboards and screens have quietly replaced handwriting in our daily routines, from classrooms to office meetings. Some schools around the world have even stopped teaching handwriting altogether.
Yet, research shows that putting pen to paper offers cognitive(认知的) benefits that digital tools can’t.
Through surveys with 205 young adults in the U. S. and Europe, Naomi Susan Baron, professor of linguistics at American University in Washington D. C, found that many students report more focus, steadier concentration, and better memory when producing a text by holding a writing instrument rather than pressing keys on a keyboard.
Adults also benefit from the labor-intensive nature of handwriting. A study involving 42 adults learning Arabic found that participants who learned letters by writing them down by hand were quicker to recognize them, had an easier time naming them, and. were better at sounding the newly learned letters out compared with people who were asked to learn the new characters by typing them.
To better understand how our senses influence our cognition, we can think of our brain as a road system, says Audrey van der Meer, a professor of neuropsychology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Brain networks in children are like faint and winding paths in a forest, she says. With practice and experience, these paths can become motorways that connect different parts of the brain to transport information fast and efficiently.
Researchers are encouraging the drills of handwriting skills. In Norway, many schools stopped teaching hand writing, instead guiding pupils to write and read on an iPad, a trend Audrey van der Meer hopes to change through her research.
32. What does the author want to emphasize in the first paragraph
A. Dull routines in daily life. B. Effects of science and technology.
C. Ignorance of handwriting. D. Replacement of school equipment.
33. How does the author draw the conclusion
A. By giving examples. B. By conducting surveys.
C. By making remarks. D. By analyzing causes.
34. Which of the following might Audrey van der Meer agree with
A. Rebuilding road systems. B. Weighing the risks of iPads.
C. Improving cognitive efficiency. D. Promoting the use of handwriting.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. The importance of handwriting in digital age.
B. The potential for assessing modern technology.
C. The situations researchers are concerned about.
D. The comparisons of handwriting and digital · devices.

It was a cold December, and things were tough. My father had died five years earlier. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community. We relied on social assistance to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were secondhand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through. Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because the bottoms were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those days, and it didn’t look like we’d be in our current house much longer. Rent was 25 dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be evicted(驱逐) right after Christmas on the first of January.
The holidays were fast approaching, and we received 25 dollars for Christmas from social services. It was four days before Christmas. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while longer. Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots— boots with no cardboard at the bottom. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, Pierre Paris boots, and they cost 23 dollars. The big day for getting my boots came on the afternoon of the day of Christmas Eve. I was very excited as I hurried up the road to catch the bus into town. It was only a half-mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized that at our house, we had no lights, no decorations and no money for Christmas goodies. I also knew we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas dinner. But at least there would be French toast.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As I continued walking, I began to feel a strange sense of guilt. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store.

第二节(共1题,满分25分)
A possible version
As I continued walking, I began to feel a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots, while Mum was probably home in tears, thinking of ways to explain why there were no presents. As I arrived at the stop, the bus came and the door opened. I stood there for what seemed an eternity, until eventually the driver asked, “Are you getting on this bus or not ” I finally blurted out, “No thanks, sir. I’ve changed my mind.” The bus drove off without me, and I stood alone in a daze, feeling as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. My mind was made up, and I realized what I had to do.
Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store. Into the store I went, brimming with happiness and excitement. I spent every cent of my hard-earned money, buying a turkey, ham and all the Christmas decorations. Once I had all those groceries piled on our porch, I knocked on the door. When Mum opened the door, she just stood there, dumbfounded. Holding back the tears, I exclaimed, “Merry Christmas, Mother!” That day I got enough hugs and kisses from Mum to last two lifetimes. To see my mother’s prayers answered more than made up for the boots I never got. It was a Merry Christmas for us after all!

A social study found that over 60 percent of China’s university students show an interest in starting up their own businesses, and they are more willing to do so in China’s small cities. After surveying 2,797 students from 100 China’s universities, the study said over 42 percent in the survey think they will have better chances of development by engaging in setting up businesses at school while 28.32 percent saw it as a way of self-realization. The third reason was economic gain. Students learn about how to start businesses mainly through activities organized by schools, at 22.58 percent, or student organizations, at 17.15 percent. Big cities have fallen from favor among students due to the rising cost of living as well as heavy traffic jams, while small cities have become favorites for setting up businesses as a result of rapid growth and improving basic public facilities. While 49.6 percent of respondents preferred small cities,32.5 percent are determined to stay in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, because they think it’s easy to get first-hand information and seize the opportunities in big cities.
