They got ready for parties and shared countless laughs as freshmen in the dormitories of the University of Maryland. They bonded over being black women at a university where,in 1971,only 4% of the students was black.Friends called the tight-knit group of women Sugar Hill, and the name sustained.
But that wasn't the end of the friend group. For the past 50 years, the women have met at least once a year for dinners, sleepovers and vacations. The 16 women of the Sugar Hill Sisterhood,as they now call themselves, have leaned on one another through decades of milestones:weddings and graduations, baby showers and funerals.“There's no challenge too big for the sisterhood,”says Everene Turner,a member of the team,"I could call in the troops in a minute."
While many people have friendships that span decades, the women of Sugar Hill are something of a case study in what it takes to maintain them.Although the bond among them was forged during college, they've worked hard to stay connected and nurture their relationships.A group chat helps them stay in touch daily,as do phone calls, video chats and remote group activities like a 90-day fitness challenge. They are committed to their annual reunions and have maintained unwavering support for one another.
In the late 1970s,one of the group members,Dawkins whose boyfriend died in a car accident, was mourning the loss when another Sugar Hill sister persuaded Dawkins to live with her. They stayed roommates for the next few years.Dawkins says,"Time and friends are two things that become more valuable the older you get."
Their group name has become part of their identity and now extends to family members. The friends support one another's children and grandchildren, and the children of the sisterhood also spend time together."It's a great feeling knowing that we've passed the Sugar Hill legacy to our offspring and they are passing it down to their offspring."Jonetta says. And before Dawkins got married in 1985,Jonetta's husband joked to her fiance that his commitment would extend beyond Dawkins,“Just make sure you want to do this——you're marrying her,but you're marrying 15 other sisters as well."

When we're angry,we often look for ways to blow off steam—a vent(发泄)session with a friend,a long run,or even a few rounds of boxing are common options. But,according to new research, this actually isn't the best way to cope with anger. These activities can have the opposite effect.
A study published in Clinical Psychology Review shows that mindfulness activities, such as yoga, mediation, and deep breathing, are much more effective in reducing anger.Sophie Kjervik,an expert at Virginia Commonwealth University, led the study at Ohio State University. She was inspired by the rise in popularity of rage rooms, which promote smashing things as a way to cope with anger.“I wanted to disprove the theory of expressing anger as a way of coping with it,"she said.
Kjervik and her team analyzed over 150 studies involving 10,189 participants of different backgrounds. The analysis was guided by the Schachter-Singer two-factor theory, which states that emotions are guided by physiological arousal(激活)and cognitive assessment.
Kjervik wanted to see how arousal levels affect people's abilities to cope with anger. The team analyzed activities that increased arousal, such as hitting a bag, jogging, cycling, and swimming, versus arousal-decreasing activities.
They discovered that mindfulness activities like deep breathing,relaxation,meditation,slow-flow
yoga, progressive muscle relaxation, and taking a timeout all decreased anger levels.
"I think it's really important to break the myth that if you're angry you should blow off steam—get it off your chest,"says Brad Bushman,a professor at Ohio State University.“Venting anger might sound like a good idea, but there's not a shred of scientific evidence to support catharsis( 宣 泄 )theory. To reduce anger,it is better to engage in activities that decrease arousal levels."
While these findings might contradict popular instincts, the best approach is to use the same strategies we adopt to combat stress."Progressive muscle relaxation and general relaxation might be as effective as mindfulness and meditation,"Kjervik says."The same strategies that work for stress also work for anger."
28.What was the main purpose of Sophie Kj rvik's study
A.To promote the Schachter-Singer two-factor theory.
B.To compare different physical activities in reducing anger.
英语试题卷 ·第4页(共9页)
C.To challenge the idea that expressing anger can manage anger.
D.To confirm the function of rage rooms in coping with anger. 29.Which is correct according to the discovery of the study
A.Rage rooms work in releasing anger.
B.Reducing arousal helps to alleviate anger.
C.Arousal plays the role as an anger extinguisher.
D.Deep breathing and meditation can boost arousal.
30.What is Brad Bushman's attitude towards catharsis theory
A.Supportive. B.Neutral. C.Indifferent. D.Skeptical.
31.What might be the best title for the passage
A.Venting Anger:the Broken Myth for Anger Management
B.Mindfulness Activities:an Alternative to Reducing Anger
C.Arousal Increase:Mindfulness Activities Outperforming Venting
D.Managing Emotions:Physical Activities as an Effective Approach D
Vast plains of solar panels can help nature more than clean energy:As populations of crucial pollinators(虫媒)decline, developers have been seeding the grounds of their solar arrays(阵列)with native wildflowers. Now a five-year study published in Environmental Research Letters, confirms that this approach boosts the pollinators' abundance and diversity ——with spillover benefits for surrounding farms.
From 2018 through 2022,Argonne National Laboratory landscape ecologist Leroy J.Walston and his colleagues regularly visited two such arrays covering hectares(公顷) each in southern Minnesota. The scientists recorded the number and kinds of pollinators the wildflowers attracted and found populations of bees, beetles, butterflies, moths, and more had increased on-site ——even as they continued declining elsewhere in the U.S.
Humans' pesticide use, greenhouse gas emissions and habitat destruction have caused mass pollinator die-offs.Monarch butterfly numbers, for example, have decreased by 80 percent nationwide in the past two decades, and according to the Center for Biological Diversity's 2017 report, nearly one in four native bee species is endangered and at increasing risk of extinction.Further big losses would be disastrous for ecosystems and agriculture:75 percent of North American plant species rely on pollinators.
The federal government's energy goals require several million hectares for solar energy, with more than 80 percent of the projects planned for former agricultural land;seeding it this way could help save endangered pollinators.
During their study,Walston and his team watched goldenrod soldier beetles boom as their namesake flower, goldenrod bloomed around the arrays. As other flowers bloomed,a symphony of insects appeared. Native bees saw the most stunning growth, with their population increasing 20 times by the study's end. Monarch butterflies also increased in number and fluttered their dotted wings across the sites.Twice as many bees visited soybean fields close to the solar sites as fields farther away, making the nearby plots' gains comparable to those of neighboring land enrolled in conservation programs.
The approach's efficacy in other parts of the country—such as the desert Southwest—remains to be seen.Nevertheless,as Walston says,at least in the Midwest,"if you plant it,yeah, they'll come."
32.What does the 5-year study focus on
A.The number of pollinators. B.The influence of solar panels on insects.
C.The effect of wildflower seeding project. D.The exploitation of alternative clean energy.
33.What is paragraph 3 mainly about

A.To highlight the ecological crisis.
B.To illustrate a mutually beneficial relationship.
C.To prove the success of conservation programs. D.To indicate the outcome the wildflower planting.
35.What does the underlined word "efficacy "in paragraph 5most probably mean

In today's fast-paced digital world,electronic waste,or e-waste,has become a significant environmental concern.According to the Global E-waste Statistics Partnership(GESP),a record 53.6 million tonnes of e-waste was produced globally in 2019,increasing 21%in just five years.By 2050,the volume of e-waste could top 120 million tonnes annually. 36
The improper disposal of it poses serious threats to the environment and human health because of the presence of harmful materials such as lead and mercury. 37 It is due to their rapidly developing bodies, including their respiratory(呼吸的),immune and central nervous systems.
Luckily, many countries are turning to tackle the e-waste challenges. They commit to specializing in refurbishing( 翻 新 )electronics, making them available to consumers at a lower cost. 38 By doing so,valuable materials such as gold, silver, and copper can be extracted from electronic devices, reducing the need for mining new resources.
Meanwhile, individuals can also contribute to e-waste disposal by being mindful of their electronic consumption. 39 Support electronic manufacturers committed to green technologies aiming for a sustainable cycle of production.Additionally,to ensure the safe and secure disposal of all sensitive information, prioritizing data security in e-waste disposal is necessary.
40 Do remember to reduce the environmental impacts of electronic products and share a greener and more sustainable future.
A.It is every small action that counts.
B.Prevention and management are needed.
C.Recycling efforts have also become a key component.
D.This includes buying quality products that last longer.
E.Children and pregnant women are especially vulnerable.

"My doctor is making me take walks for my health, but I don't like it,"Henry grumbled( 抱怨 ) . "It's supposed to be autumn, but it feels like the dead of winter."He pulled his scarf up over his mouth and nose and walked past them.
"He's bad-tempered!"Tyler said in a low voice."Henry is just lonely. His wife died right after we lost your grandmother."
Suddenly,a gust of wind blew off both men's hats. The hats flew toward the duck pond, and Henry's went in.Tyler ran down the hill and grabbed Grandpa Charlie's hat off the grass and fished Henry's out of the water. He ran back up the hill, holding out Henry's hat."It's wet.Just throw it away.I'll have to buy a new hat,"Henry said coldly, walking past Tyler.

第二节
Tyler stared at his grandpa's red hat and came up with a plan.If waving could bring Grandpa joy, maybe it could make Henry's day too.Tyler thought to himself. Then he asked Grandpa Charlie if he could give the red hat to Henry since his was wet.Grandpa Charlie readily agreed and immediately,Tyler dashed to catch up with Henry.“Grandpa wants you to have his hat.”Tyler said sincerely, presenting the red hat to Henry, who stared at Tyler for a moment. Then he shrugged, took the hat,and put it on."Tell him thanks,"Henry said, walking away.
A car passed, and the people inside waved at Henry.Soon, another car passed and honked.Henry was confused. When the people in the third car waved at him,he hesitated for a moment and waved back, puzzlement still lingering in his mind. Not until a cheerful voice shouted,"Good morning, grandpa in red hat!"did he realized what was going on.He laughed aloud and decided to do something."Maybe I'll take more walks,"he said casually as he caught up with Grandpa Charlie and Tyler, his voice softer.“It's not so bad out here, especially with good company."Tyler and Grandpa Charlie exchanged a knowing glance, delighted to see Henry's spirits visibly rise. They continued the walk, the cold air no longer feeling so chilly,as the warmth of kindness and connection filled the day.
