Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher I do, mine. Her name was Mrs. White.
I don't remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a Good! The scrawl(潦草的笔迹) in that worried my mother, so one day when she met Mrs. White for one of those Parent—Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes. Why she never red-pencilled in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical errors.
Mrs. White said, “The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. I don't want to dampen that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait...” What my mother gave me was the gist of what she could remember. But I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence just like that.
And it occurs to me that if Mrs. White had used her red pea more precisely I probably wouldn't be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher—to restrain(限制) her red pen. To allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression flower—however faultily—like that.
I used to misspell “beautiful” a lot. I never coded quit remember that the “e” went before the “a”. It annoyed my teacher in high school endlessly. Eventfully the “e” s and “s” s that were wrong placed in “breadnut” settled into their right places. I am glad I didn't wait on them though. “Pretty” is easier to spell but it doesn't hold as much as you mean sometimes.
And thanks to Mrs. White I had no concerns about writing what I meant, even if I couldn't quite spell it out. Because life isn't pretty. It's beautiful.
24. What worried his mother when the author was in kindergarten
A. The author's unwillingness to go to school.
B. The teacher's terrible attitude to the author.
C. The teacher's ignorance of the author's mistakes.
D. The author's failure in exams and scrawl in homework.
25. What does the underlined word “dampen” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Reduce. B. Gain. C. Awaken. D. Inspire.
26. What can we learn from the fifth paragraph
A. The author preferred using the word “pretty”.
B. The teacher in high school disliked the author.
C. The author finally succeeded in spelling “beautiful” correctly.
D. The author owed all his own spelling problems to Mrs. White.
27. Which of the following can be used to describe Mrs. White
A. Generous and Kurt B. Enthusiastic and careful.
C. Honest and brave. D. Far-signed and tolerant.
C
In recent years, China has witnessed the growth of luxury(奢侈品) brands. In this market, Chinese consumers are now the Largest spenders. It's clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image. I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit—I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don't understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that's a scary thing.
What's interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn't lead to happiness. Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we don't suddenly become “”happy” people. In fact, a series of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, US, has shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those who invest it in material things. That's because experiences are more easily combined with a person's identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me.
Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through “things” are liked less by their peers. People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences.
It's natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is; create a look that isn't tied to a designer label. Convey your own message. Take some lessons from the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Ho was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style. You don't have to break the bank to send a message about who you are. Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look.
28. What can we infer from the first paragraph
A. The author enjoys buying funny brands herself.
B. The author agrees to overspend money on material things.
C The author is critical of youths tying their looks to designer labels.
D. The author finds it naturally far fashionists to follow fashion trends.
29. Leaf Van Boven's studies showed that ________.
A. people dislike those who lose luxuries
B. traveling changes a person's identity greatly
C. luxuries have a negative feet on people's happiness
D. experiences can bring people more happiness than luxuries
30. What is the author's advice on expressing oneself
A. Be selective about designer labels. B. Create your own personal unique style.
C. Choose simple and fashionable styles. D. Try styles like Mark Zuckerberg's.
31 The main purpose of the article is to ________.
A. prove bow luxury leads to an unpleasant life
B. tell bow to express yourself through appearance.
C. report on a series of studies about luxuries and happiness
D. persuade readers to invest in experiences instead of luxuries
D
Plants cannot run or hide, so they need other strategies to avoid being eaten. Some curl up their leaves, others produce chemicals to make themselves taste bad if they sense animals drooling on them, chewing them up or laying eggs on them—all signals of an attack. New research now shows some flora can feel a plant-eating animal well before it launches an attack, letting a plant prepare a preemptive(先发制人的) defense that even works against other pest species.
When ecologist John Orrock of the University of Wisconsin-Madison sprayed shirt slime—a liquid the animals release as they slide along—onto soil, nearby tomato plants appeared to notice. They increased their levels of an enzyme(酶), which is known to prevent plant-eating animals. “None of the plants were ever actually attacked.” Orrock says. “We just gave them cues that suggested an attack was coming, and that was enough to cause big changes in their chemistry. “
Initially Orrock found this defense worked against snails; in the latest study, his team measured the slimy warning's impact on another potential threat. The investigators found that hungry caterpillars(毛虫), which usually eat tomato leaves greedily, had no appetite for them after the plants were exposed to snail slime and activated their chemical resistance. This nonspecific defense may be a strategy that benefits the plants by further improving their overall possibilities of survival, says Orrock, who reported the results with his colleagues in March in Oecologia.
The finding that a snail's approach can cause a plant response that affects a different animal made Richard Karban curious, a plant communications expert, who was not involved in the study. “It is significant that the plants are responding before being damaged and that these cues are having such far-ranging effects,” Karban says. The research was comprehensive, he adds, but he wonders how the tomato plants felt chemicals m snail s lime that never actually touched them.
“That's the million-dollar question,” Orrock says. He hopes future research will make out the mechanisms that enable plants to sense these relatively distant cues.
32. Why did John Orrock spray a liquid onto soil near tomato plants
A. Because it gives them a warning.
B. Because it makes them grow better.
C. Because it keeps plant-eating animals away.
D. Because it informs plant-eating animals of danger.
33. Why is the example of “caterpillars” mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. To introduce another animal.
B. To confirm the result of the study.
C. To appeal to people to protect animals.
D. To analyze different resistance chemicals.
34. What does Richard Karban really want to know
A. What the finding of the research is.
B. What the chemicals in the snail slime are.
C. Whether the research is of practical valued.
D. How tomato plants become aware of danger.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Watchful Plants B. Greedy Animals
C. A Snail's Approach D. A Defense Attack

How to Study Effectively
With pressure and competition rising in education, students nowadays are eager to find the best methods or tools to improve their academic scores. So, questions like “What is the best study method ” or “How can I learn knowledge faster ” arise in their minds. 36
Play the role of a teacher
A useful way to remember lessons is to explain them aloud to yourself. Once you learn a study material, try to explain it to yourself or your friends as your teachers explain it to you. This will help you to clear your confusion related to the lesson 37 . Thus will not only help the details stick in your mind but help you to be well prepared for your exams.
38
Many students face a challenge like “Why can't I remember what I've studied ” 39 . A tired brain is a barrier to learning. Exercise before studying helps to lift your mood. In fact, physical activity helps wake you up so you feel ready when you sit down with your books.
Absorb information in smaller chunks (块)

Last but not the least, these tips on how to study effectively can only work if there is enough motivation and willpower to do well. You have to motivate yourself to reach the study goals.

B. You can call your parents for help
C. Start with your toughest assignments
D. It has a lot to do with the brain getting too tired

Kareem sighed as he counted his money again. He was still short of fifty dollars to buy the latest Speedster X bike. In order to save his pocket money to replace his old bike, he had been packing sandwiches to school the last three months.
“How can I get that fifty dollars ” he thought to himself. His mind was wondering when Mother's voice disturbed his thoughts. “Kareem, I just ran into Aunty Kim, our neighbour who just moved in next door. Her son, Shawn, will cycle to school next week. Could you show him the shortcut to school later It's Saturday anyway!” Hearing this, Kareem had no option but to obey it. He knew Mother had probably already volunteered his service to Aunty Kim. “Oh, here's a mail from your Grandma. Open it!” added Mother.
Kareem's grandmother lived abroad and she would send him photos and cards. He opened the envelope and pulled out a greeting card. Incredibly, a fifty dollar note slipped out as well! Kareem was wild with joy. Waving the note in the air, be shouted happily, “Enough money for my bike!”
At 2 p. m. Kareem met Shawn as arranged by their mothers. The sooner he finished this task, the sooner he could go to the bike shop. While the boys were cycling, a squirrel(松鼠) appeared behind a parked car and dashed across the road so suddenly that the boys knocked into each other and fell down heavily. Kareem said regretfully, “I forgot to warn you about the squirrel population here.” As Kareem was lifting up his broken bike, Shawn cried anxiously, “Oh, my poor bike! It's completely broken.”
