When was the last time you used a telephone box I mean to make an actual phone call— not to shelter from the rain. Ages ago, right The last time I used a phone box for its intended purpose was...2006. I was conducting auditions(试镜) for my play in my tiny, old shared house in London. Hoping to impress some talented actors to come and work for me for nothing, I spread some throws over the sofas and lit candles to make it seem a bit more “young professional.”
As I rushed outdoors to empty the wastepaper baskets, the door swung shut behind me. Suddenly, I was locked outside. My mobile phone was inside, but luckily, there was a telephone box across the street. So, I called Directory Assistance, got put through to our landlady's managing agent, and had a spare key sent to me with just enough time to get back in before the actors arrived.
As it has been many years since I last used one, I should hardly be surprised that there are no longer any public telephones near my house. The last one standing has just been turned into a “mini community library”: any passer-by can “borrow” a book from its shelves and return it later, or replace it with another title from their own collection.
For a few months after the “library” opened, I didn't bother taking a look, as I had assumed that it would be stuffed full of cheap love stories. Then I noticed folks conducting spring cleans, dropping off boxes of voluminous books on various subjects there. And these books were free. This unbeatable price-point encouraged me to experiment with dozens of titles that I would never normally consider buying. And I've discovered some great books!
If I ever get trapped outside my house again, my local telephone box will, sadly, no longer be able to connect me with my keys. But it can certainly keep me entertained while I wait for my wife to rescue me.

A. It provides phone service for free. B. Anyone can contribute to its collection.
C. It is popular among young readers. D. Books must be returned within a month.
27. Why did the author start to use the “library”
A. He wanted to borrow some love stories. B. He was encouraged by a close neighbour.

Have you ever read a book and found that one of the characters is exactly your carbon copy And you relate to the character so well that you can't help but wonder if the author had somehow observed your own life Well, that is Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables for me.
There are many instances in the book where I particularly felt connected to little Anne, like the one where she does a performance at a school concert. Although she has gone up on stage several times before, this is the time she gets a taste of stage fright. The same thing happened to me during a poetry competition in high school. Never did I find the stage as intimidating as I did on that day. There's another situation where her friends don't miss home as much, while Anne is terribly homesick. I could imagine how Anne feels. I've always wondered how people can move out of a place where they've spent their entire childhood and not feel even a pinch of sorrow.
Whether it is the world of imagination that she loves to weave, or the experience of growing up as a lonely child, or the beautiful moments of daydreaming, or her fondness for nature, Anne is me, through and through. As I read through the chapters learning about her chattering nature as a kid that grew quieter during adolescence and the respect for her teachers, I saw myself in her.
I grew so close to Anne and her friendships, her school and her dear little Green Gables and its inhabitants, that I couldn't control my tears when I finished reading the last chapter. That's what books do. They give you the freedom to live inside their fictional world even when you' re aware that you' re only a reader who exists outside. And although your existence inside that fictional world is imaginary and temporary, you end up cherishing that experience for a lifetime.

A. Imaginative and nature-loving. B. Proud and dream-pursuing.
C. Creative but lonely-minded. D. Competitive but self-centered.

A. She was moved by Anne's tough experience.
B. She hated to part with her beloved characters.
C. She failed to understand the story in the book.
D. She was unhappy with the ending of the book.

Franz Boas's description of Inuit life in the 19th century illustrates the probable moral code of early humans. Here, norms were unwritten and rarely expressed clearly, but were well understood and taken to heart. Dishonest and violent behaviors were disapproved of; leadership, marriage, and interactions with other groups were loosely governed by traditions. Conflict was often resolved in musical battles. Because arguing angrily leads to chaos, it was strongly discouraged. With life in the unforgiving Northern Canada being so demanding, the Inuit's practical approach to morality made good sense.
The similarity of moral virtues across cultures is striking, even though the relative ranking of the virtues may vary with a social group's history and environment. Typically, cruelty and cheating are discouraged, while cooperation, humility, and courage are praised. These universal norms far pre-date the concept of any moralizing religion or written law. Instead, they are rooted in the similarity of basic human needs and our shared mechanisms for learning and problem-solving. Our social instincts include the intense desire to belong. The approval of others is rewarding, while their disapproval is strongly disliked. These social emotions prepare our brains to shape our behavior according to the norms and values of our family and our community. More generally, social instincts motivate us to learn how to behave in a socially complex world.
The mechanism involves a repurposed reward system originally used to develop habits important for self-care. Our brains use the system to acquire behavioral patterns regarding safe routes home, efficient food gathering, and dangers to avoid. Good habits save time, energy, and sometimes your life.
Good social habits do something similar in a social context. We learn to tell the truth, even when lying is self-serving; we help a grandparent even when it is inconvenient. We acquire what we call a sense of right and wrong.
Social benefits are accompanied by social demands: we must get along, but not put up with too much. Hence, self-discipline is advantageous. In humans, a greatly enlarged brain boosts self-control, just as it boosts problem-solving skills in the social as well as the physical world. These abilities are strengthened by our capacity for language, which allows social practices to develop in extremely unobvious ways.
32. What factor primarily influenced the Inuit's practical approach to morality
A. The need for strict social order. B. The influence of external cultures.
C. The challenging living conditions. D. The desire for individual freedom.
33. What can we learn from this passage
A. Inconveniences are the cause of telling lies.
B. Moral virtues are surprisingly similar worldwide.
C. Language capacity is limited by self-control.
D. Written laws have great influence on virtues.
34. According to the passage, what leads to the consistency(一致性) of moral virtues across different cultures
A. A uniform global history that influences all societies equally.
B. The universal adoption of a single moral code by all cultures.
C. The innate human responses to similar needs and challenges.
D. The widespread influence of a few dominant cultural norms.
35. Which would be the best title for this passage
A. Virtues: Bridges Across Cultures B. The Values of Self-discipline
C. Brains: Walls Against Chaos D. The Roots of Morality
第二节 (共 5 小题; 每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What is moderation Basically, it means eating only as much food as your body needs. You should feel satisfied at the end of a meal, but not too full. 36 But it doesn't mean saying goodbye to the foods you love.
Take your time. It's important to slow down and think about food as something nutritious rather than just something to eat in between meetings. 37 It actually takes a few minutes for your brain to tell your body that it has had enough food, so eat slowly and stop eating before you feel full.
Eat with others whenever possible. Eating alone, especially in front of the TV or computer, often leads to mindless overeating. And be careful about the foods you keep at hand. It's more challenging to eat in moderation if you have unhealthy snacks at the ready, like cookies. 38
Control emotional eating. 39 Many of us also turn to food to deal with unpleasant emotions such as sadness, loneliness, or boredom. But by learning healthier ways to manage emotions, you can regain control over the food you eat and your feelings.
40 A healthy breakfast can start your metabolism(新陈代谢), while eating small, healthy meals keeps your energy up all day. Avoid eating late at night. Try to eat dinner earlier and fast for14-16 hours until breakfast the next morning. Studies suggest that eating only when you' re most active and giving your digestive system a long break each day may help to regulate weight.
A. Eat properly throughout the day.
B. We don't always eat just to satisfy hunger.
C. Don't swallow a meal on the way to work.
D. Most of us need to double the amount we eat.
E. Instead, surround yourself with healthy choices.
F. For many of us, moderation means eating less than we do now.
G. That won't lead to cheating or giving up on your new eating plan.

The other day, I was driving home, a little upset because I hated working at the weekend. On the way, I decided to grab some veggies in the nearby greengrocer’ s. Since there was still thin ice on the road, I took a glance at the rear mirror to make sure no pedestrians or vehicles came close, and slowly steered the wheel to the right. Then out of any of my expectancy my car bumped into an electric bike, giving out a harsh metallic clash. I collected myself and saw out of the window screen a boy lean on one side of the bike, one foot off the ground.
All of a sudden, a familiar scene flashed across my mind.
When I was in high school, I had fun riding my bike along the country road on sweltering and boring afternoons during summer holidays. Sometimes I carried my little brother to the only grocery store in the neighborhood where we could buy our favorite ice cream. Once we had an argument about what to buy. Seeing him leave the store in a temper, I jumped on the bike and tried to talk him into going back. Suddenly, he gave me a push and I inclined towards the middle of the road when a motorbike came in my face. I fell on the ground before I could see anything clearly. Luckily, I didn't get hurt but still couldn't rise to my feet. The motorist, a middle-aged man, ignoring his torn jeans, immediately checked on me, “Are you okay Your leg Your foot ”
“I am all right, but...” I stared at him, terrified because I was sure he would ask for “big” sum of money for damage. Instead, he just let me go despite his wife's protests. Guilty as I was, I was happy that I was spared. I was really grateful to the man for forgiving a silly kid who had made such a big mistake involuntarily.
