At the age of 16, I lived with my parents at an institute 18 miles from Durban with no neighbors around. One day my father needed a ride to town for a meeting. Meanwhile, my mother gave a list of groceries and my father asked me to take care of several pending chores such as getting the car serviced. When I dropped my father off that morning, he said, “I will meet you here at 5:00 p.m., and we will go home together.”
After hurriedly completing my chores, I went straight to the nearest movie theater. I got so engrossed that I forgot the time. By the time I ran to the garage and got the car and hurried to where my father was waiting for me, it was almost 6:00 p.m. He anxiously asked me, “Why were you late ” I was so ashamed of telling him I was watching a movie that I said, “The car wasn’t ready, so I had to wait,” not realizing that he had already called the garage. When he caught me in the lie, he said, “There’s something wrong in the way I brought you up that didn’t give you the confidence to tell me the truth. In order to figure out where I went wrong with you, I’m going to walk home 18 miles and think about it.”
So, dressed in his suit and dress shoes, he began to walk home in the dark on mostly unpaved, unlit roads. I couldn’t leave him, so for five-and-a-half hours I drove behind him, watching my father go through this pain for a stupid lie that I uttered.
I decided then and there that I was never going to lie again. I often think about that episode and wonder, if he had punished me the way we punish our children, whether I would have learned a lesson at all. I don’t think so. I would have suffered the punishment and gone on doing the same thing. But this single action was so powerful that it is still as if it had happened yesterday.
4. Why did the author drive to the town
A. To get the car replaced. B. To attend a meeting.
C. To go for a ride. D. To give his father a lift.
5. How does his father respond to the writer’s lie
A. He gave comfort to the writer. B. He reconsidered his parenting.
C. He punished the writer immediately. D. He called the garage right away.
6. How did the author feel when he drove behind his father
A. Regretful. B. Annoyed. C. Shocked. D. Confused.
7. What lesson can parents learn from this father’s approach
A. Thinking in children’s shoes is important.
B. Taking no action on kids’ mistakes is helpful.
C. Non-violent actions are useful and powerful.
D. Spending more quality time is effective.
C
There are 6,909 languages actively being spoken in the world today, although only about six percent of them have more than a million speakers each. People in many different countries see the value of learning a foreign language to improve their international business relations. Because of this, the number of people who speak certain languages will continue to rise. There are some languages that currently dominate the globe.
With more than 1.3 billion people living in China today, it is no surprise that Chinese is the most commonly spoken language. Due to the size of China’s area and population, the country is able to sustain many unique and interesting languages. When speaking of languages, the term “Chinese” contains at least 15 dialects (方言) spoken in the country and elsewhere. While Spanish is not a commonly heard language in most parts of Africa, Asia, and the majority of Europe, that hasn’t stopped it from becoming the second most commonly spoken language. The spread of the Spanish language is rooted in colonization (殖民). English too, was a colonial language: British colonial efforts began in the 15th century and lasted until the early 20th century, including places as far flung as North America, India and Pakistan. Africa, and Australia. After World War Ⅱ, the United States led the world in both technological and medical innovation. Because of this, it was considered beneficial for students pursuing work in these fields to learn English. English is also a useful language for travelers to learn because it is spoken in so many parts of the globe.
Since the popularity of social media, the development of a Global Language Network can be mapped using book translations, Twitter, and Wikipedia. These social networks are only available to elites, people with access to both traditional and new media. Statistics of use from these social networks indicate that while English is definitely the center in the Global Language Network, other intermediate centers used by elites to communicate business and science information include German, French, and Spanish. Currently, languages such as Chinese, Arabic, and Hindi are vastly more popular than German or French, and it is likely that those languages will grow in use of traditional and new media.
8. What does the underlined word “dominate” mean
A. Rule. B. Follow. C. Improve. D. Weaken.
9. Which of the following does not contribute to the widespread use of Chinese
A. The large population of China. B. The various dialects of Chinese.
C The geographical size of China. D. Its influence in global colonization.
10 Why do many people choose to learn English as a foreign language
A. It promotes national tourism. B. It is helpful for them to seek jobs.
C. It is mainly used in local business. D. It allows them become online influencers.
11 What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. English will become less central in the future.
B. Social media is equally accessible to all people.
C. Hindi grows more important than Spanish in business.
D. Language use is changing due to social media use.
D
If you could time travel, would you visit the past or the future You could find your ancestors, descendants, or experience life when dinosaurs wandered your back garden. It sounds otherworldly, but scientists have looked into whether time travel is actually possible.
Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity changed understanding of space, time, mass and gravity. The key element of this theory is that time and space are linked together, and time doesn’t flow at a constant rate, meaning it speeds up or slows down, depending on where you are. For example, when you travel at high speeds, time decreases, which means, according to NASA, astronauts in space moving at high speeds age more slowly than those on Earth! So, if you wanted to travel to the future, you would need to move close to the speed of light. Then, while centuries pass on Earth, you’d experience a relatively short amount of time and could hypothetically (假设地) return home, where it would be the future!
Travelling backwards in time seems much more difficult. Theoretically, one way of going back is via a wormhole. That means, if space and time can be folded like paper, we could create a tunnel — a shortcut between points in time. The problem is that there is no evidence that wormholes exist. “It’s been shown mathematically that they can exist, but whether they exist physically is something else,” says Emma Osborne, an astrophysicist at the University of York. Also, theories show that wormholes would be so small that a person definitely couldn’t fit through one, and they would have such an intense gravitational field that they would collapse very quickly.
For now, it seems we’ll have to be content with science fiction and using telescopes to look back in time rather than travelling through it.
12. Why does the writer mention Einstein’s theory of relativity
A. To explain how time travel might work.
B. To stress the importance of time travel.
C. To describe Einstein’s contributions to science.
D. Ty encourage us to work out the theory.
13. Why do astronauts age more slowly than those on earth
A. Time flows at the same speed across the universe.
B. Moving faster slows the passage of time.
C. Speed and space are closely connected.
D. The speed of light prevents their aging.
14. Why does travelling backwards in time seem much more difficult
A. Wormholes move faster than the speed of light.
B. Scientists have not studied time travel to the past.
C. Wormholes lack scientific evidence of existence.
D. The speed of light only allows forward movement in time.
15. What is the author’s attitude regarding the possibility of time travel
A. Indifferent. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Positive.

Nearly two weeks after a devastating 7.8 magnitude Turkey-Syria earthquake, first responders are continuing to search and rescue survivors. Over 40,000 people lost their lives in the natural disaster, and that number is expected to climb. But people are staying strong and holding out hope as rescuers continue to find survivors among the rubble. And, as these survivors appear, the stories of their strength and courage are amazing.
In waiting to be rescued, many survivors are finding strength they didn’t know they had. This was true for 33-year-old Necla Camuz, who was trapped inside her home in Turkey’s Hatay province with her 10-day-old son, Yagiz, in her arms. She waited for over 90 hours before being rescued. To survive, she breastfed her baby, who had been resting on her chest at the time of the earthquake. Camuz, who did not eat or drink anything, occasionally pounded on the pipes that had saved her and her child, hoping to draw the attention of rescuers.
While Camuz was terrified that they would never be found, she looked to her infant as a source of strength. She added that she was happy that he was too young to remember what had happened. Eventually, Camuz heard the sound of barking dogs and, shortly after, they were rescued. When the rescue team asked how old her son was, she didn’t know how to respond. She knew he was 10 days old at the time of the earthquake, but wasn’t sure how many days she had been trapped.
This story has an even happier ending, as when she arrived at that hospital, Camuz was given the news that her husband and 3-year-old son had also survived. They had been in a separate room of the apartment when the earthquake struck and had been taken to a different hospital after sustaining injuries to their legs and feet. While the family has lost their home, they have now been reunited after this frightening experience.
Miracles are continuing to happen. Ten days after the earthquake, rescuer Mehmet Eryilma pulled a woman named Ela and her two children from the ruins of a collapsed apartment in Turkey’s Hatay province.
As always, these stories give hope that there are many people still waiting to be rescued. But once pulled from the ruins, there is a hard road ahead as people lost their homes, and many have also lost their families. If you are looking for a way to help, consider giving money to Global Giving’s earthquake fund.
16. How does the writer explain the destruction of the earthquake
A. By listing figures. B. By giving examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By describing the scene.
17. What can we infer about Necla Camuz’s experience during the earthquake
A. Her husband gave her hope when being trapped.
B. She was trapped with her baby for nearly three days.
C. She managed to signal rescuers by making sounds.
D. She calmly communicated with the rescuers throughout.
18. How can people help the survivors
A. By joining rescue teams.
B. By contributing to a disaster relief fund.
C. By visiting the affected areas to offer support.
D. By providing shelter for survivors.
19. What is the best title of the article
A. Rebuilding the Homes after the Earthquake.
B. The Night the Earth Didn’t Sleep.
C. Rescue Efforts in Finding Survivors.
D. Rising from the Ruins.
