When you’re faced with challenges in life, you have two choices—you can either give in to the
challenge, or you can overcome it. Jasmine Mazard-Larry is a conqueror (征服者). The 17-year-old is
graduating from high school with a highly impressive GPA of 8.07.
Jasmine has faced several difficulties during her young life, one of which is struggling with hearing
loss. Worse still, four years ago her family lost everything in a serious house fire, leaving Jasmine
homeless for the first two years of high school. Jasmine had every reason to just give up and let her
situation beat her. Instead, she used her challenges to fuel her.
“She dealt with a really difficult situation, but she didn’t allow it to stop her from meeting her goals.
I think that was really extraordinary, and she was just very goal-driven from day one,” her principal,
Marlee Strawn, said.
Throughout her high school years, Jasmine has taken Advanced Placement (AP) courses, dual
credit courses, and the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education, all of which
contribute to her high GPA. Besides her academic achievements, Jasmine takes an active part in various
extracurricular activities, including those from the student government association, the student council,
speech and debate teams, the robotic club, and the art club.
So what is it that drives her “I use my little brother as my motivation,” Jasmine said. “Sometimes
it can be challenging, but when I look at him, I want to be a role model for him.”
Jasmine also encourages young people like her to fight hard against any difficulty that is
preventing their progress. “We all have our own story. There’s the good and the bad. But don’t ignore
the bad because it makes you who you are. In 20 or 10 years from now, you’re going to look back and
be like, ‘I did that. I overcame all of these challenges, and here I am today,’” she said.
24. How did Jasmine probably feel when she was in high school
A. Stressed but positive. B. Lonely but patient.
C. Grateful and confident. D. Worried and hopeless.

A. Her eagerness for great success.
B. Her fear of falling behind her brother.
C. Her intention to encourage young people.
D. Her desire to set an example to her brother.

Dolphins seem to make open-mouthed facial expressions most often when they see a playmate,
suggesting such expressions may be similar to human smiles.
While we often consider these as a smile, there has been little research on facial communication in
dolphins.
To find out more, Elisabetta Palagi at the University of Pisa, Italy, and her partners studied the
behaviour of 22 captive (被关起来的) bottlenose dolphins at two animal parks.
In 80 hours of footage (片段), the team observed a total of 1288 open-mouthed expressions during
social play periods. More than 90 percent of these events happened during play between dolphins, with
the rest happening during interactions (互动) between the dolphins and people.
The animals were more likely to show the open-mouthed expression when their faces were within
the playmates’ field of view—89 percent were shown in this context. When the playmate saw the
“smile”, they appeared to smile back 33 percent of the time.
“It is not easy to say if an open-mouthed expression in dolphins expresses a kind of feeling or is
used to simply communicate with others, or both,” says Palagi.
She says the study can’t make sure whether it is similar to smiling in humans. “We do not expect to
find out dolphins’ communication strategies during play with a single piece of research. However, we
hope to open a new line of research in which the visual factor is also considered.”
Luciana Moller at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, says open-mouthed behaviour in
dolphins happens in various situations, including aggressive (挑衅的 ) and social interactions. This
means it is a very special signal that has different meanings, so can’t necessarily be explained as a smile.
She points out that making sounds might have been a reason why the dolphins opened their mouths,
but the study didn’t look at any acoustic (声音的) recordings.
Another disadvantage is that it looked at a small number of dolphin groups in the captive situation,
so their behaviour may not show that in the wild.
“Free-living dolphins have much larger space to interact while playing, and many times are found
in waters with low visibility (可见度),” says Moller. “In these conditions, visual signals may not be as
useful as acoustic signals.”
28. What can we know about the open-mouthed expression in dolphins
A. It is similar to other animals’ smiles.
B. There has been much research on it.
C. Dolphins show it to people most often.
D. It is unsure why dolphins show such expression.

29. What can we know from the research
A. Dolphins’ open-mouthed expression shows a kind of feeling.
B. Dolphins’ open-mouthed behavior only happens when they play.
C. Open-mouthed behaviour in dolphins can’t be regarded just as a smile.
D. Depending on it to find out dolphins’ communication skills is highly accepted.
30. What is Moller’s attitude to the study
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Disappointed.
31. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To encourage people to interact with dolphins.
B. To find out the living environment of dolphins.
C. To introduce a new research on dolphins’ open-mouth expression
D. To show the similarity between dolphins’ open-mouth expression and human smiles.
D
Many of us are not happy with our physical appearance. We want to change ourselves, to be more
like a perfect image shown on magazine covers, TVs, movies... Indeed, there is a multibillion-dollar
industry built around people’s desire to look “better”.
I think we all have an idea that our society’s preference for body image is not completely healthy,
and it isn’t. There is plenty of research showing that poor body image is connected with depression (抑
郁) and eating disorders, especially among women.
Research also has shown that exercise can improve a person’s own body image, regardless of any
actual change in their body. One study showed that just 30 minutes of physical activity had a clear
positive effect on women’s body image. But why is this
A small study in the magazine Psychology of Sport and Exercise tested different possibilities. They
chose 75 college-age women who were dissatisfied with their physical appearance, as measured by
several previous questionnaires (问卷调查). The questionnaires measured how these women felt about
their appearance, weight, fat level, fitness, confidence in their ability to exercise, energy levels and
stress. They were also asked how much they enjoyed exercise. Then, half of the women exercised
actively for 30 minutes on an exercise bike, while the other half sat in a room and read magazines. Then
they all repeated the questionnaires, right away and again 20 minutes later.
The women who exercised felt thinner and stronger immediately, and still felt that way 20 minutes
after exercising. The authors suggest that these positive changes may last longer than 20 minutes, and
thus may help to explain why people who exercise regularly have better self-images regardless of any
actual change in their appearance. They call for further research examining different types of exercise
and increasing the post-exercise (运动后的) study time.
Though this is a small study, it does support previous findings. I think it’s safe to say that exercise
is clearly connected with improvements in body image, and there is little disadvantage. I already
recommend regular exercise to my patients who suffer from depression, and for those who also suffer
from poor self-image, this recommendation could be even more important.
32. What does the underlined phrase “a multibillion-dollar industry” probably refer to
A. The fashion industry.
B. The health and fitness industry.
C. The beauty and body care industry.
D. The TV and movie making industry.
33. What can we know from the passage
A. A good body image can prevent depression.
B. Exercise has a mental effect on body image.
C. Young women were satisfied with their physical image.
D. Women are more likely to have a good body image than men.

A. the questionnaire covers various subjects.
B. women were asked about types of exercises.

第二节(共 5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In a modern time when everyone is so busy with their routine and problems, we almost forget to
notice others. 36 So it is worthy of sparing some moments to notice them and pass a compliment
(称赞).
A compliment is a high dose (剂量) of positive words which helps make people feel good. Whether
you are going through a street, a park, a market or other places, you can pass words full of praise and
encouragement to even strangers because these positive words are what they want to hear. 37 Also,
they will feel good enough to get the attention of those around them.
If you appreciate people for their hard work, they will gather the courage to do their job more
skillfully. For example, a person may want to do something for his life but couldn’t do so because of a
lack of encouragement and positive support. 38 And the creativity of people greatly increases
through your positive comments.
39 When you tell strangers about themselves, praising them through your compliments, the
ego (自我 ) will gradually disappear and healthy interactions will appear. If you fail to communicate
with people or do not pass a compliment because of the ego, your relationship will stay distant.
When you start to praise and give positive words to people, you also get them back. Everyone
wants to be praised and seen by others. If you break your ego first and appreciate people and tell them
about their personalities, people also would like to do the same in return. 40
A. Then they will feel happy for your little act.
B. Everyone has their problems in today’s world.
C. You will develop a positive attitude towards life.
D. Compliments help make people close to each other.
E. People who are living around us may not always be there.
F. Through this, you will receive recognition of yourself, too.
G. With compliments, however, he will be encouraged to do what he wants to do.

After college graduation, I became an editor of our city evening paper and was promoted to the

One day, as I parked my car and walked towards the office, I noticed two boys who appeared to be
around eight years old, selling popcorn on the street corner. Curious, I approached them and requested
half a kilogram of popcorn. They prepared it for me within five minutes.
“How much is it ”I asked.
“It’s 30 rupees, sir,”they replied.
I then asked their names, and they answered, “Sahib, Asib.”
I asked Sahib why they weren’t in school and were selling popcorn instead. Sahib explained that
they were doing it to earn money for their schooling. However, Asib quickly interjected (插话), saying
they had no money left after covering food and medicine, not to mention schooling fees.
“Medicine for what You guys are looking well,” I said.
Asib replied, “Our mother has a kidney (肾) disease, so we need money to purchase medicine for
her treatment.”
When I asked about their father, Sahib sadly shared that he had passed away from cancer four years
before, leaving their mother to support them with two jobs.Knowing that they shouldered so heavy
burden (负担), I was deeply moved and struggled to find words. Before leaving, I asked whether they
would be there the next day, intending to buy some then. They assured me they would come.
“Take care, boys,” I said as I left.
The next day, I returned to the spot where I had met Sahib and Asib the day before, but they were
not selling popcorn as usual, standing there with a single bag of popcorn. I asked why and they
explained that they had been waiting for me but had to leave because their mother’s health had got
worse.
I could see in their eyes that their hearts broke because of sadness, so I decided to do something to

Hello, everyone!
I’d like to share a good habit that has greatly benefited my English learning with you.
It’s the habit of setting specific and achievable goals for each study session. By breaking down my
learning tasks and setting clear objectives, I can better focus and manage my time effectively. This habit

progress step by step. Moreover, it has helped me stay motivated and organized, leading to better
academic performance.
I encourage you to give it a try and experience the positive impact it can have on your studies.

第二节读后续写
One possible version:
Paragraph 1
I told them that they were too young to bear the heavy burden alone. With these words, I took out
2,000 rupees and handed the money to them. They were too shocked to say a word. I told them I would
try my best to help them go back to school and help their mother cure her disease. Hearing these words,
the boys were so touched that tears poured out of their eyes. They cried, “Thank you very much ...”
Having a sudden idea, I left them immediately and returned to my office.
Paragraph 2
At my office, I penned down this touching story and made the decision to share it with the public. I
appealed to fellow citizens to extend their support, emphasizing that with everyone's contribution of a
little love, the kids would not fear to lose their mother or face homelessness. They shouldn’t shoulder so
much burden at such an early age and great efforts should be made to help them go back to school. The
response to my appeal was overwhelming. With the collective efforts of the community, the mother’s
condition got better and better, and the children also saw their beloved teachers and classmates again. It
was the joint love that turned a story of hardship into a story of hope.

Text 10
W: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our zoo. I’d like to introduce some new kind of
animal— milu deer (麋鹿). This kind of deer can be found only in parks and zoos in our country
now. Generally speaking, a milu deer grows to a height of 1.2 meters. And a grown-up deer weighs
about150 to 200 kilograms. In summer, the deer eat grass. In autumn, they eat nuts and
fruits which fell from the trees of the forest. In winter, when there is very little other food, they
eat the dry leaves of the trees. The grown-up females give birth to their young in summer.

When the baby deer are strong enough to stand on their feet, they join their mothers. It’s very
difficult to catch them because they can smell danger from a long way away. Besides, they can hear
and see very well, too. The difference between a milu deer and other deer is that the coat of milu
deer is bright red in summer and gray in winter, and that their feet are bigger and their tails are
longer.
