Maureen Stanko always felt her son, Nick, had so much to give. Nick is 20 and is on the autism spectrum (自闭症) and despite her knowing he had so much to give, what he would do after graduation kept his mom up at night. In Pennsylvania, where they live, students with disabilities can stay in school until they are 22 years old. Stanko says she’s heard from many parents of kids with disabilities that they worry about their kids’ futures.
Stanko brought the worry to Nick’s doctor, Tyler Kammerle, who told her he had a goal of opening a restaurant to employ people with disabilities. They teamed up with philanthropist (慈善家) Kathy Opperman to make that dream a reality.
They opened the So Much To Give Inclusive Cafe in Cedars, Pennsylvania in January 2023. They employ 63 people — 80% of employees have a disability — and they work as greeters, food runners, chefs, dishwashers and servers.
Stanko didn’t know if Nick would be able to work at the cafe. But he goes beyond her expectations and helps out at the cafe before it opens, setting up the tables before diners arrive. “I actually brought him here on Wednesday because his school was closed and he set this entire room up without me saying a word,” she said. “And the level of pride in him was just incredible.”
Stanko didn’t stop at the cafe. Her dream was to create a space to teach people with disabilities. So, across the street, she opened up the Inspiration Studio, where they teach music, life skills, crafts and other classes for people with disabilities.
Stanko says she couldn’t have done it all without her team and the donors who helped make both of the spaces possible. “I did originally think that So Much To Give was all about Nick and others with different abilities,” she said. “But what I’ve learned through this whole process is that it’s not just about Nick and other people with disabilities. Everybody has so much to give.”
4. What was Maureen Stanko’s initial concern for her son Nick
A. His disease diagnosis. B. His future after graduation.
C. Finding a good doctor for him. D. Figuring out his personality.
5. How did Nick feel about working at the cafe
A. Stressed. B. Challenging. C. Pleasant. D. Realistic.
6. Why did Stanko open up the Inspiration Studio for individuals with disabilities
A. To create opportunities of work for them.
B. To enhance the educational environment.
C. To allow them to get mental health services.
D. To support them in their learning journey.
7. What did Stanko learn through the process
A. The importance of having a backup plan.
B. The limitations of people with disabilities.
C. The necessity of more funding for such projects.
D. The universal potential in everyone to contribute.
C
Solar stills (蒸馏器) provide a clever and simple means of cleaning dirty or salty water, but they work at a rather slow rate. A new material has been shown to boost their performance, and it's made from fruit waste which would otherwise be thrown away.
In its most basic form, a conventional solar still contains undrinkable water that is set beneath a cover. The water evaporates (蒸发) as it’s heated by the sun, condensing (凝结) on the inside surface of the cover. That condensation — which is pure, clean water — drops down the cover and is collected in a separate container for drinking.
In order to warm the dirty salty water at a faster rate, scientists have developed materials that float on its surface, turning sunlight into heat. And while those materials have been made from a number of different substances, they commonly use carbon obtained from coal. Seeking a less costly and more eco-friendly alternative, Prof. Edison and colleagues at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University looked to something that does’t have to be mined and is free for the taking — fruit waste. More specifically, the scientists tried out coconut peels, orange peels and banana peels.
In the process, the fruit waste was heated at 850℃ for a few hours, and mixed with a kind of chemical substance. Doing so transformed the fruit waste into a new material which has a very high light-to-heat transforming efficiency.
When tested, this new material proved to be very potent at transforming sunlight into heat then. And because the material is full of holes, the water steam is able to rise right through it, then condensing on the inside of the still's cover.
Prof. Edison and his team found material obtained from the coconut peels worked best, as it transformed sunlight to heat with an efficiency rate of 94%. They are now developing the technology further, and are seeking industry partners to help with its commercialization.
8. What is the paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The basic working principle of solar stills. B. The advantages of conventional solar stills.
C. The new materials of building a solar still. D. The different ways of cleaning dirty water.
9. Why did Prof. Edison and his colleagues try out fruit waste as an alternative
A. To solve the problem of environmental pollution.
B. To find out more eco-friendly materials.
C. To expand the applied range of the solar still.
D. To make solar stills much easier and less costly.
10What does the underlined word “potent” mean in paragraph 5
A. Convincing. B. Representative. C. Effective. D. Durable.
11. What is the best title of the text
A. Transforming sunlight into heat through high-tech
B. Turning fruit waste into water-cleaning material
C. Solar stills are the best way to get drinking water
D. New technology helps solar stills reach the customers
D
Who doesn’t love a warm, delicious and satisfying meal Food is what keeps human bodies full of nutrients and it provides the energy needed to go through life. But there is more to eating than just survival. People often use food to bond (建立密切联系) with others through shared meals, food gifts and at celebrations. As the Better Health Channel reports, food is used by people in all countries and cultures around the world as a way to come together and enjoy.
Gathering together with friends and family, or even with strangers, nourishes (滋养) more than our bodies. And what’s interesting is that it’s not necessarily the actual food that makes the meal so important. The social interaction of the meal setting encourages people to pay attention to each other and to connect, Life Magazine reports.
So how can people include these important “bonding through food” practices into their lives Some suggest going out to eat with friends, family members or coworkers bi-monthly or even weekly. Going out to eat or sharing meals with others creates much deeper and more meaningful interactions when compared to other joint activities like watching a movie or TV together.
Research conducted by the University of Oxford showed that people who eat socially are more well adjusted in social and emotional settings and are more likely to feel better about themselves. And although many people eat their meals alone, 76 percent of the people questioned think sharing a meal is a good way to bring people closer.
So why is it that eating with others feels good A study conducted by the University of Chicago concludes that it is all about trust. According the research, food helps develop trust since eating the same food together with someone else suggests that both parties are willing to bring the same thing into their body. It’s only natural that trust and cooperation are likely to develop as a result of this bonding experience.
12What is the purpose of sharing meals beyond survival
ATo provide energy for the body. B. To bring people together socially.
C. To serve as a form of entertainment. D. To celebrate personal achievements.
13. What can we know from the Life Magazine’s reports
A. Social interaction during meals is significant.
B. Meals are primarily for nutritional purposes.
C. The food itself is the most important aspect.
D. Eating alone is more beneficial than sharing meals.
14. How can people put “bonding through food” into practice
A. By sharing food gifts more often. B. By watching movies or TV together.
C. By spending more time with the family. D. By eating together with others regularly.
15. Why does sharing meals feel good
A. It provides a sense of belonging. B. It offers an opportunity for relaxation.
C. It develops trust between individuals. D. It allows for the sharing of diverse opinions.

No parent ever pictures having to rely on our child for lifesaving help, but sometimes these things are beyond what we can control, and we can only hope and pray that our kids would have what it takes to rise to the occasion.
A mom and dad in Oklahoma must be especially proud of their little boy after he rose to the occasion with rare and praiseworthy courage when their lives were in danger. His quick thinking and heroism were larger than life and well beyond what you’d expect for his years.
The story began when tornadoes hit the area of Marietta, Oklahoma, at the end of April. Wayne Baker, a husband and father who lives in the area, noticed an odd stillness in the air. He didn’t hesitate, gathering his wife, Lindy, and their son, nine-year-old Branson, jumped in their truck and headed for a neighbor’s storm shelter.
But on the way there, the tornado, like a fierce beast of nature, caught up with them with howling winds and spinning (旋转的) cloud. In a second, a massive tree was lifted from the earth and hurled (猛扔) towards their truck, destroying the vehicle like a fragile toy. Wayne and Lindy were badly injured and trapped at the scene: Wayne Baker’s back, neck and arm were broken. He also lost part of a finger. Lindy Baker’s back, neck, jaw, ribs (肋骨), and right hand were broken. She went through the windshield and remained halfway into the vehicle and halfway out. It was pretty horrible.
Thankfully, young Branson was uninjured in the backseat, and it became his mission to save his parents. This little boy had escaped death just moments before. Most of us (of any age) wouldn’t want to take a single step in such conditions. Yet with all these scary things around him, somehow nine-year-old Branson found the strength to go for help.

【答案】Dear Eiditor,
As I took part in the summer camp about health and lifestyle choices, I started to analyze them seriously, especially playing games, the unhealthy way I relaxed myself, and its effects on my life.
A month ago, I felt stressed out and always relaxed with computer games day and night. Playing was fun, but I felt even more worn out afterwards! After the camp, I realized that it was time to adjust my lifestyle by finding other ways to relax. Rock climbing and playing basketball were the things I thought of doing instead. Though it was a big struggle, I made it with great determination.
After a month of trying out, I feel more energetic now. I believe that I can change myself for the better.
Yours truly,
Li Hua

Despite the chaos and danger, he managed to climb out of the broken car. The wind howled around him, and debris flew through the air, but Branson knew he couldn’t give in to fear. His parents were counting on him. He stumbled through the mud and rain, desperately searching for help. Finally, he reached his neighbors’ house and banged on the door with all his might.
When Branson explained the situation, they immediately sprang into action. They pulled open the door, their faces etched with concern as Branson, soaked and trembling, told them about the accident. Without hesitation, they called 911. Soon, sirens wailed in the distance, and the emergency services arrived. Working quickly, they carefully extracted Wayne and Lindy from the wreckage. Branson watched, his small chest swelling with relief as his parents were carried into waiting ambulances. He had faced the storm and, through his courage, saved his parents’ lives.
