I was filled with doubts and worries until my grandfather told me to stand tall.
For me, height was my trouble. I was much taller than other girls, I often bent(弯曲) my body at the back of the line. I had always felt unsafe as the tallest student of my class in Bala Cynwyd. And I wasn't looking forward to entering the ninth grade.
My grandfather didn't laugh at me. Instead, whenever I tried to bend myself in order to appear shorter, he would tell me “Stand straight, stand tall, Alisa.” I trusted my grandfather more than anyone else in my childhood. And whenever I was afraid of something, he always told me stories of his life.
My grandfather grew up in war-torn(战乱的) Europe. “Stand straight, stand tall” meant something else then. After the war, he went to America. He lived a hard life, “If they could do it, why couldn't I?” “Stand straight, stand tall,” he often reminded(提醒) himself. Thanks to the help of a friend, my grandfather got a job. He once told me that he was very nervous at first. He was not only trying to learn this hard new job but also a new language.
“Stand straight, stand tall,” he would always tell himself. I am so proud of my grandfather. After listening to my grandfather's unusual experiences, I have changed the way I look at my own life.
“Stand straight, stand tall” has become not only a piece of advice to improve my posture(身姿). It also tells me to be proud of who I am. And I do.

We are often told to pay attention to what our mothers tell us. Most of us enjoy listening to our mothers speak. Scientists have found that compared with other people's voices, our brains greatly prefer(更喜欢) the voices of our own mothers.
Scientists at Stanford University,US, recently studied this. They scanned children's brains while they were listening to different sounds, including their mothers' voices. They found that 97 percent of the time, children could recognise their mothers' voices at once.
Hearing their mothers' voices makes children's brains more active. We usually just use one part of our brain to deal with sounds when we hear something. But when we hear our mothers' voices, many parts of the brain, including those in charge of(负责) reward(奖赏) and emotion(情感), start to work as well.
Why do we respond so strongly to our mothers' voices It starts even before we're born. When children are still in the womb(子宫) or have just been born, they hear their mothers talking. This makes babies feel comfortable and teaches them language and social skills, even though they are still very young. The babies learn to recognise their mothers' voices as a rewarding sound. Later, when this sound is heard again, more attention is paid to it.
Some sounds are necessary for our survival(生存) or bring us pleasure. These sounds are recognised by our brains as rewarding sounds. Most human voices are not recognised in this way, since we hear them so often. But mothers' voices are different. They bring us a lot of comfort.

( )2. What will happen when children hear their mothers' voices
A. Many parts of their brains become active.
B. They will need time to recognise the voices.
C. Their language skills start to improve.
D. They will remember some bedtime stories.
( )3. According to Paragraph 4, why do children pay more attention to their mothers' voices
A. Because they can recognise their voices quickly.
B. Because their voices make them more comfortable.
C. Because they can get a reward for doing so.
D. Because they can get love from their mothers.

You may know about “junk food” like French fries. But do you know about “junk sleep”?
A British survey(调查) shows that there are many electronic(电子的) products in teenagers' bedrooms. They are influencing teenagers' sleep badly.
The survey was done among 1,000 British kids from 12 to 16. It is found that 50% of them got just 4 to 7 hours' sleep every day. But doctors say they need 8 to 9 hours.
Almost 25% of the kids said they often fell asleep while they were watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products.
“This is very worrying,”said Dr Chris, a British professor(教授),“We call it ‘junk sleep’. It means you don't get enough sleep and the quality(质量) of the sleep is low too.” The survey found that quite a few of the kids felt tired each day because of the junk sleep, especially girls between 13 and 16. Nearly all the teenagers have a phone, music player or TV in their bedrooms. And lots of them even have all the three.
Dr Chris suggested that parents should help their children keep away from the electronic products, and that teenagers should spend less time on the electronic products.
