Tom Avery is one of the only 41 people ever to have reached both the South and North Poles. He was born in December 1975 and brought up in England, Brazil and France. His passion(强烈爱好) for adventure began when he was just seven years old and first read about the expeditions(探险) of famous explorers. Perhaps this was the start of his plan to put together the ultimate(终极的) journey—to the very top of the world, the North Pole, following the route taken by Robert Peary in his 1909 adventure.
Both Peary and Avery set off from Cape Columbia in Canada. Peary had a larger team and in fact had four support groups. Every 160 kilometres, a group would leave plenty of food and then turn back. The team therefore got smaller the further north they travelled. While Avery didn't have as many on his team, they did have food dropped by plane for them at four locations.
Avery's team also had the obvious benefit(明显的利益) of modern technology, but Avery doesn't believe this made a big difference. He credits(把……归功于) his team's success to the 16 Inuit dogs that pull the sledges(雪橇). “It wouldn't have been possible without them,” he said. “Your speed depends on the dogs and how quickly you can get a sledge through the ice.” His team were travelling at the end of winter and this meant that the ice was thinner and could easily break under a person's weight. This was an added danger.
Another difference between both men's journeys was that Peary was far more experienced than Avery and had already been on several trips to the Arctic.
Peary claimed(声称) to have reached the North Pole in 39 days, but some historians argue that this was not possible. Avery's team actually beat this time and became the fastest to get there on foot. Avery says, “We told everyone we could do it and that we wouldn't fail(未能达到). But it certainly wasn't easy.”
( )1. What is the purpose of the text
A. To tell us why Avery and Peary travelled to the North Pole.
B. To compare Avery and Peary's interests.
C. To describe ways of reaching the North Pole.
D. To describe two difficult journeys to the North Pole.
( )2. How did Peary's North Pole expedition differ from(与……不同) Avery's
A. Peary's team was smaller than Avery's.
B. Avery's team was offered food by air.
C. Avery started from a different place.
D. Peary took a very different route.
( )3. What does Avery think of having modern technology
A. It slowed his team down.
B. It improved the safety for the team.
C. It wasn't of great importance.
D. It helped his team to travel faster.
( )4. How did Avery feel about the Inuit dogs
A. He was very thankful to them.
B. He would take more dogs next time.
C. He was surprised at the speed of the dogs.
D. He thought they were well-trained.第2课时 重难考点强化训练

On a windy day in June, Fourth Class took the train to Chinatown. We had begun to learn Putonghua and our teacher said this excursion would let us practise our language skills and learn more about Chinese culture.
We entered Chinatown through the arched(拱形的)entrance gate with red painted wooden pillars(柱子). Big stone lions sat on each side. Then I noticed that the street signs were written in both Chinese and English. I photographed the sign for Hay Street.
The next place we visited was the Chinese Garden of Friendship which was very peaceful.
There were waterfalls, hidden stone paths and a beautiful teahouse. We had a wonderful time there.
At last it was time for our Chinese lunch. We entered a big restaurant that had red lanterns hanging from the roof and red dragons on the walls. The waiters greeted us in Putonghua and we answered them in Putonghua. We were shown how to use chopsticks and how to choose from the menus with Chinese writing.
At 2:30 we left Chinatown. We were all very tired. On the train, our teacher told us her experience in China. She was just back from seeing the Great Wall of China. It's like a long dragon winding its way. We were told it is the longest wall in the world. As we were listening, one student, who I couldn't name, fell asleep on the train and snored(打鼾) loudly. His face turned red when he woke up.
In the past, I often told my Chinese classmates how to speak English. Now there are more people than ever who are studying Chinese. I can understand why it's a fascinating language, and there are always new words to be discovered! I cannot forget our excursion to Chinatown.

Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave properly(举止得当) in different situations around the world.
Most travellers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway. And if you're travelling in Thailand, never touch people's heads or point your feet at people. When the Japanese meet new people, they like giving business cards—but you should read the card carefully, not just put it in your pocket.
In most countries in Europe, people expect a lot of eye contact(交流) when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries, a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. In South America, people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA, you need to give people more personal space. Also, it's rude to interrupt(打断) Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they finish before you start speaking.
In restaurants in China, you can leave a bit of food on your plate, and it's OK to start smoking before other people finish eating, but you mustn't do these things in the UK. When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia—that's bad luck.
With so much to think about, it's not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries—or you might just decide to stay at home!

You can travel alone, with friends, or with a tour group. They all have advantages and disadvantages.
The best thing about travelling alone is that you can do what you want to do. No waiting around in places you aren't interested in, no missing a bus because your friend was late, etc. Your experience will be greatly improved by travelling alone. The main worry is loneliness, but believe me, it's not difficult to talk to and meet people. There's a problem of safety in some countries, especially for women travelling alone. You should always check the foreign office of your country for advice on safety. Buying a personal alarm is a good idea for women travelling alone.
Travelling with a friend does sound nice, but it depends on how well you get on. If you have similar(相似的) interests or travel ideas, it should be wonderful. You will find it much cheaper to cook food in developed countries and share a room. However, a lot of people I meet travelling together don't seem to be having as much fun and often go their separate(各自的) ways.
Tours are great when they go well. Some of my best memories have been with tour groups. A terrible tour guide, quiet group and terrible food can ruin(毁掉)your time. My advice would be never to go on a tour that is too long except in countries with safety problems or poor transport.
All in all, travelling alone is the best, but it is good to mix it up. Invite a friend from home to meet you for a few weeks. Try a tour or two—some people love them—perhaps start with a day tour.
( )1. Which of the following is NOT one of the advantages of travelling alone
