Although social media has its positive aspects, it can also have some serious negative results.
For example, have you ever been bored and decided to check social media, only to find out that your best friend is at Disneyland, one of your classmates is eating delicious pizza at your favorite restaurant, and one of your basketball teammates is climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris
Oh, man! You’re really missing out! At least that’s what you might think. Have you ever had that feeling that others are experiencing things and enjoying life more than you are Researchers call that feeling the fear of missing out or FOMO.
FOMO is a real phenomenon that over 75% of young people report feeling from time to time. Social media is a primary culprit, because it’s so easy today to scroll through(浏览) to see what your friends are doing, eating, buying, or talking about.
Unfortunately, it would be impossible to enjoy all the same activities we see others engaged in on social media. Rather than realizing this basic truth, though, we often let FOMO lead us to compare our lives to those of others on social media. This comparison leaves us feeling dissatisfied. Why We know all the aspects of our lives — both good and bad. But all we see on social media are the picture-perfect moments others share.
FOMO leads us to check social media more frequently, leading to a negative cycle that can be hard to break. Researchers have found that social media and FOMO can lead to feelings of depression, loneliness, and boredom.
Researchers advise that we stop looking to social media for happiness. If we let FOMO control us, the only thing we’ll really be missing out on is our own life. And life’s too short for that!

There is an old Chinese proverb that states “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade.” and this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship. These characteristics include a hierarchy(等级) of responsibilities and unconditional love, which preclude mothers and daughters from being best friends.
Marina, 27 years old, said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my best friend. Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they carried you in their body and gave you life! Best friends don’t tell you how wise they are because they have been living at least 20 years longer than you.”
This doesn’t mean that the mother and daughter relationship can’t be very close and satisfying. This generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common. which increases the likelihood of shared companionship. Mothers and daughter shave always shared the common experience of being homemakers, responsible for maintaining and passing on family values and traditions. Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of work and technology, which may bring them even closer together.
Best friends may or may not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse, the mother and daughter relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren’t speaking. Sometimes this is not an equal relationship. Daughters don’t always feel responsible for their mother’s emotional well-being. But mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and often feeling responsible for their happiness. The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other. Mothers always “trump” friends.

38. Why can a mother and a daughter build a closer relationship according to Paragraph 3
A. Because they share advanced technology with each other.
B. Because they work together to support the whole family.
C. Because they experience the same values and traditions.
D. Because they have common experience in life and work.
39. What do we know from the text

Farmers often feel they need a lot of sunshine to produce a good crop. But lots of vegetables grow well without much sun.
The Rodale Institute in Pennsylvania published a report about this subject some years ago in its magazine Organic Gardening. The report said many different kinds of foods, from blueberries to beans, can be grown in the shade.
Some vegetables do need a lot of sun. A vegetable crop expert at the University of Maine advised putting these vegetables where they can get from eight to ten hours of sunlight a day. Tomatoes, melons, squash and peppers are among those that need the most sun.
Plants that produce root crops, such as carrots and beets, need from six to eight hours of sunlight every day. But leafy vegetables, such as lettuce and spinach, need only six hours of sunlight a day.
The Rodale Institute says a garden should be planned carefully especially if you grow different kinds of foods. For example, rows of vegetables should be planted in an east-west direction. That way, as the sun passes overhead. all the plants will receive an equal amount of light. This is especially important when the plants grow to different heights.
Nut trees such as filbert. hazelnut and yellow horn produce well with only sun in the morning.
Some fruits also do well without a lot of sunlight. In the United States, blueberries, raspberries. and several kinds of pears need only a little sun each day. In Asia, the hard y kiwi grows well in the shade.
Many herbs grow well without much sun. Mint plants. for example, grow well in the shade. So do sage. dill. oregano, borage, chamomile and several kinds of thyme.
Mr. Brown, the owner of a garden seed company warned against removing shade trees. He cut down all his shade trees to provide more sun for his crops. But then he had to protect his summer ettuce from the heat of the sun by hanging a piece of cloth to provide shade.
Instead of cutting trees, he suggested putting plants that need a lot of sunlight, such as tomatoes, in containers. That way they can be moved as the sun moves.

It’s break time. Molly sat at the picnic table alone while the rest of the students were running freely. The new girl was once again excluding herself from the midday celebration. Even though the school had been in session for several weeks already, she remained awkward around her classmates.
Brianna, the class clown. was standing near the playground and making the other students laugh as usual.
I interrupted her fun and asked her to come to talk with me. “Brianna, do you see Molly down there ” I asked. “She looks very lonely. Would you mind walking down there and inviting her to come here to be with the rest of us ” I patted her on the shoulder.
Brianna sighed. I could tell she didn’t want to waste her precious time on what I was saying, but I also knew her heart. She was sweet and kind and often thought of others, so I chose her for this task on purpose.
Seeing that this choice pained her, I took a D-buck, our class currency, from my pocket. Though it was not the best way to handle this situation, I needed to ensure her cooperation. “Here, I’ll pay you for your time,” I said. She smiled, grasped the green paper, and headed towards Molly.
My eyes focused on Brianna as she neared the picnic table. After talking for a while, Molly turned to a standing position. Then I felt a sense of relief. The girls walked back together. Several minutes later, Brianna walked to me and handed me the D-buck, saying, “I shouldn’t keep this, because I don’t want Molly to think I only went to her for a D-buck. She is my friend.”

Best friends don’t tell you how wise they are because they have been living at least 20 years longer than you.””(27岁的玛丽娜说:“我喜欢和妈妈在一起,但我不认为她是我最好的朋友。 故选A 项。

根据第一段第二三四句“The relationship between a mother and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship.”(母亲和女儿之间的关系有时令人困惑。 及第四段最后两句“The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other. Mothers always“trump” friends.”(母女关系是任何其他关系都无法替代的。母亲总是“胜过”朋友。)可知,本文探讨的问题就是母女关系和友谊关系是否一样,即“妈妈可以是孩子最好的朋友吗”这一问题;最后给出了作者的答案“妈妈总是胜过朋友”,故C 项“Can a Mother Be a Daughter’s Best Friend ”可用作本文标题。故选C项。

56. Dear School Administration,
I am writing to shed light on certain non-environmentally friendly practices on our campus and suggest ways to address them in alignment with the “Green Campus” initiative.
One prevalent non-environmentally friendly phenomenon on our campus is the excessive use of disposable plastic water bottles. Every day, numerous plastic bottles are discarded, contributing to plastic pollution and harming our environment.
To tackle this issue, we can implement several solutions. Firstly, installing water refill stations across campus can encourage students to use reusable water bottles, reducing the reliance on single-use plastics. Secondly, organizing awareness campaigns and educational workshops can educate students about the detrimental effects of plastic pollution and promote sustainable alternatives. By adopting these measures, we can significantly reduce our environmental footprint and progress towards a greener campus environment.
Thank you for considering these suggestions for a more sustainable future.
Sincerely,
Li Hua

M: Hello, everyone. My name is Christian Bonnet, a French computer scientist and a true lover of Asia. Born in the 1940s, I belong to a generation that was crazy about “The Adventure of Tintin”. When I read “Tintin in Tibet” as a boy, I started looking forward to visiting Tibet one day. Then about 10 years ago, my wife and I made our first trip from Thailand to India passing through China. Of all my travels, this is the one that I shall always remember. We traveled for three months, and spent 12 days in Tibet, where we were deeply impressed by many sights, such as the Potala Palace and the Himalayas. But what really attracted me was the warmth of people and their spiritual power. The Tibetan people are really nice. When you take part in some activities with the Tibetans, you really feel a powerful energy. Besides, it was our dream to see Mount Qomolangma. When you reach the base camp of Mount Qomolangma, it is a wonderful experience. We have made 16 trips to Asia in 39 years, four times to China.
