In the hottest months of each year, many powerful storms are born in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen cause the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that are named hurricanes, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and most seriously, bring death to large numbers of people.
The great storms that hit the coast start as harmless circling disturbances (大气搅动) hundreds, even thousands, of miles out at sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, wet air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In this course, the wetness in this warm air produces rains, and with it the heat is changed into energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to swirl (旋转) in a counter-clockwise (逆时针) motion.
The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The hidden energy of the heat given off by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the US for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6-to-12-inch downpour resulting in sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea, the mountains of water moving toward the low-pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves towards shore.

Adelaide schoolgirl Tilly Williams, aged 11, has broken a world distance running record, beating other girls who were eight years older than her to run 5000m in just 17 minutes and 22.7 seconds.
The Parkside Primary student beat the previous record by 19 seconds, making her the fastest distance runner under the age of 19 across 60 countries. Tilly started running just two years ago and has already shot straight to the top. When some of her friends informed her of the international record, she decided to give it a try while competing at the SA State Championships. Since then, she has run two to three times a week with her and, Mark Williams, or at the Adelaide Harriers Athletics Club.
Tilly has been inspired by runners Caitlin Adams, Tara Palm, and her favourite book character, Matilda by Roald Dahl. “I could really relate to the main character Matilda because she set herself goals and really had to work hard to achieve them.” she said.
Tilly is set to represent South Australia in Tasmania on Friday at the National 10-12 years Track&Field Championships competition at Launceston. She also has dreams of competing in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. “In the long-term, maybe, but in the short-term, it’s just achieving a goal and then getting to the next one and then achieving that: it’s a long way down,” she said.
“You never think that anyone’s going to get a world record at this age, at any age really, it’s just surreal,” Mr Williams, Tilly’s dad said. “We’re very proud. It’s very important to recognise these achievements, but also to stay very much grounded and just enjoy the other pursuits that she likes. She loves her running, but she does so many other things as well and I think it’s really important that the focus is on life rather than just one thing.”

A new study, which was done by Brigham Young University, has found that students perform better in school if they go on more cultural field trips.
Field trips have always been seen as fun for students, and they look forward to their chances to get out of the classroom and go somewhere fun. But field trips can be difficult for teachers to plan, because they need to make sure that there is learning and value included. Some have argued about the worth of field trips, and whether they are worth a student missing a whole day out of school.
However, Heidi Erickson, one of the researchers in the study, stated that there is no harm in taking students out of the classroom, even for multiple days throughout the year, as long as they are learning and in an appropriate space. The study had 4th- and5th-grade students from 15schools take part in this study. They went on three cultural field trip s during the school year, to an art museum, a live theatre performance, and a symphony (交响乐) concert. Then the researchers looked at their school year compared to students who did not take part and this is where they saw the difference.
The study found that students who went on multiple field trips a year had higher test scores and performed better in class over time when compared to students who did not go on as many field trips.
This new study is showing the true value of field trips, especially when they are considered “cultural”.
9.Why is it hard for teachers to plan field trips according to Paragraph 2
A.Teachers are concerned about students’ safety.
B.Teachers don’t believe in the worth of field trips.
C.Students have to miss a whole day out of school.
D.Teachers have to ensure the students meaningful experiences.
10.What is Heidi Erickson’s attitude towards cultural field trips
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Concerned. D.Unclear.
11.How did the researchers make the finding
A.By asking students questions.
B.By taking field trips themselves.
C.By doing surveys among teachers.
D.By comparing different groups of students.
12.What is the main idea of the text
A.Cultural field trips improve students’ grades.
B.Students perform better in an appropriate space.
C.Why cultural field trips are popular with students.
D.Why the number of students’ field trips is dropping.
