一、阅读理解
As for long-distance travel, there are some wonderful destinations that actually offer you great value for your money, especially for those who do not hope to empty their pockets after a holiday.
Tokyo, Japan
Food lovers should go to this busy city which has the lowest cost of eating out — you can even buy two evening meals (three dishes for each), with a bottle of wine, for just under £34. For sightseeing there are plenty of free museums and attractions, while tour bus ticket prices start from as little as £11.56.
Bangkok, Thailand
Thailand’s capital is second to none as the best value long-distance city. Although there isn’t a big difference in all prices compared to the other cities, it is accommodation that really makes it stand out. If you’re only stopping for a long weekend, then be sure to pay a visit to the breathtaking temples.
Beijing, China
The Chinese capital stands out with the total price of £337.49. If you only have one cultural day out during your stay, make it a trip to the Forbidden City. There are some beautiful buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. At the same time they’re home to priceless artificial objects from ancient Chinese emperors’ families.
Dubai, UAE
Although Dubai does have a reputation for being quite the splurge (挥霍) when it comes to holidays and if you’re going to enjoy shopping or experience the roller-coasters, it is in fact quite worth the money. I was sleeping in my room when my bed started shaking and a loud noise was heard. I woke up and my mom was screaming my name. Next moment I was running along with my younger sister, mom and dad. Before I ran out of the door, I realized my elder sister hadn’t come out yet. So I screamed her name at the top of my voice. My mom said she had gone to her class. Then the four of us, along with many others, were running on the staircase. We lived on the seventh floor, so I thought we would not be able to make it and the building would fall before we managed to reach even the fourth floor. My dad’s head was injured by something falling down. I did try to put my hand over his head. When we reached the sixth floor, the building split into two. We had no way to get down.
The next thing I remember is silence. There were around 30 people on the staircase and none could react. Five minutes later, someone opened the door of the sixth-floor flat. We all went in. We were wondering how would get down. From the balcony of the sixth-floor flat, I saw people standing on the ground floor. All eyes were stuck on us. I could see my elder sister crying.
Our first hope of surviving came when a worker climbed a rope to where we were. That was the first time we thought maybe we could get down. Half an hour passed and we were still trapped. Finally RSS people arrived with ropes. They got people down one by one. My biggest worry was how my dad would get down. Finally after two and a half hours, we all got down.

Today’s grandparents are joining their grandchildren on social media (社交媒体). People who are over 55 are joining Facebook in increasing numbers, which means that they will soon be the site’s second biggest user group—with 3. 5 million users aged 55-64 and 2. 9 million aged over 65.
Surprisingly, 44% of grandparents say they have "excellent" skills in using social media. Sheila, 67, of Swansea, Mass. would put herself in this group. "I joined Facebook to see what my grandchildren are doing, as my daughter posts videos and photos of them. I also show off my garden when it’s in bloom (开花) or how happy my husband and I are when we go for a picnic to my family members. Without social media, I don’t think we would have the same relationship," says Sheila.
Teenagers are spending so much time on their phones at home that they ignore their friends in real life. However, the elderly may not do the same. For example, Sheila has got in touch with old friends from school whom she hasn’t heard from in the past forty years. “We use Facebook to discuss when and where to meet,” she says. “It’s changed my life completely.”
Teenagers might have their parents to thank for their smartphone and social media addiction as their parents were the early users of the smartphone. Peter, 38 and father of two teenagers, reports that he used to be on his phone or personal computer endlessly. He says, "How could I tell my kids to get off their phones if I was always in front of a screen myself " So, in the evenings and at weekends, he takes his SIM card out of his smartphone and puts it into an old-style mobile phone that can only make calls and send text messages.

At St.Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, there is a message written on the walls:"No child should die in the dawn(开端) of life." The message is clearly seen in the work done at the hospital.
Started by Danny Thomas in 1962, St. Jude mainly pays its attention to childhood cancer.Families from around the world go to St. Jude for help, which was recently named one of the best children’s hospitals in the United States.
The hospital’s research has led to several break-throughs in treatment. Since 1962,the survival rate(率) for childhood cancer has risen from 20% to 80%.
Sue Harpole is the chief development officer of ALSAC,the fundraising(筹资) organisation for St. Jude. When asked what makes St. Jude special, she said that the main part of its funding comes from donations. "Once a child comes to us," she added, "they don’t pay for treatment, travel, housing, or food so that the family can pay full attention to helping the child get well."
St.Jude organises 30,000 fundraising activities or so around the nation every year. The St.Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend is the most successful of those events, drawing about 26,000 runners each year. The money raised from the fundraisers covers 75% of the hospital’s daily spending of $2.4 million.
Doctors and researchers at St.Jude are continually studying childhood cancer and working on new treatments. The hospital shares its research with other medical organisations around the world, all in the hope of developing better treatments for cancer.
“The important thing to realise about research is that it needs the cooperation of many people,” Harpole said. “It’s not a competition between people. It’s really a competition against cancer. To do that, we have to work together.”

When I entered the vet hospital, the vet helper was helping another customer. She knew what kind of cat food I needed to buy and asked if I wanted a partial case (半箱) or a full case. Thinking I was always busy, I decided to buy a full one.
Just then another new customer hurried in and rushed to the front of the vet helper. The vet helper asked him to wait after me. Since I wasn’t in a hurry, I told the helper to serve the gentleman first. I could go to the pharmacy and give them time to do the paperwork while I was gone.
The helper said, "Thanks, that would be great!"
The gentleman said sorry for his cutting in the line just now because of something important to do, and said, "You should go first— you were here before me."
"No worries, you go right ahead. My pleasure," I said.

34.答案:
I went back to the vet’s after about ten minutes. I walked up to the vet helper, and she was waiting with a huge grin. “You don’t have to pay! That gentleman bought all your cat food for you!” “What the !” I was so surprised. “Did he know how much it cost before he decided to buy it ” “Yes! He asked first. I thanked him many times for you! I also asked him why he bought the food for you. He said your kindness just now helped him a lot and you asked him to do so, too. He wanted to pass on your kindness.”
Holding the cat food paid by the gentleman, I felt good inside. The gentleman’s action not only made it easier for me to pay for the cat food but also made me believe in the kindness of people. On my way home, I couldn’t stop smiling, thinking about how being polite had led to such a nice surprise. I decided that I would keep looking for opportunities to help others, no matter how small, to keep the cycle of kindness going.
