China’s technique of growing Juncao, the herbal plant used in the growing of edible mushrooms, has contributed to global poverty reduction, agronomist Lin Zhanxi said at the Delegates’ Passage before the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China on Oct.16,2022.
“We offer training at home and abroad, send our experts to teach local farmers, and we do serve them heart and soul as our brothers,” said Lin, the chief scientist of the National Juncao Technology Research Center and a professor at Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, who discovered and shares this mushroom-growing technology beyond China for years. The technique was later promoted from East China’s Fujian province to other areas in the country and has even reached countries across the world.
As a fungi (真菌) expert, Lin said he first came up with the idea of using Juncao grass instead of wood for producing mushrooms in the 1970s. In 1971, Lin was the first person to suggest the idea of cultivating edible fungi in chopped-up wild grass. After an investigation in rural areas in Fujian province in 1983, he decided to do research to put his idea into practice. At the end of 1986, Lin saw the first Juncao mushroom growing in his laboratory. Since then, Lin and his team have developed the technology by using 45 different kinds of grasses as Juncao fungi grass.
Juncao moved 17,700 farmers out of poverty in Northwest China’s Ningxia Hui autonomous region. The technique has been promoted to 106 countries and regions around the world.
Twenty years ago, villagers in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea began to learn this modern biological technology with the help of Chinese agronomists. After the experimental planting of Juncao grass was successful in Papua New Guinea, villagers shouted “Juncao, China!” to express their excitement, Lin said. Many people in the South Pacific, Latin America and African countries have shaken off poverty through growing Juncao grass and mushrooms, he added.
More than 12,000 Chinese experts have been trained to promote the technique worldwide, contributing Chinese wisdom to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, Lin said.

A small Swedish study found evidence of increased melatonin (褪黑素) in healthy adults who used a weighted blanket before bed.
For many people who struggle with anxiety and poor sleep, weighted blankets are one cozy, wellness luxury well worth the small investment. Many shoppers swear by the calming benefits of weighted blankets, reporting better sleep, lower stress and anxiety, and overall increased feelings of relaxation.
But scientifically speaking, there aren’t many studies to confirm the benefits of lying under a weighted blanket. That’s why researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden carry out a small study to find out whether using a weighted blanket — compared to using a light blanket— can actually help boost sleep-promoting chemicals. such as melatonin and oxytocin.
Twenty-six young, healthy adults participated in the study. In stage one they were covered with a weighted blanket (weighing about 12 percent of their body weight) for one hour before bedtime, followed by an eight-hour sleep window. Researchers collected saliva (唾液) samples during the pre-sleep hour to measure changes in melatonin and other hormone (荷尔蒙) materials. In stage two, participants were covered with a light blanket (2.4 percent of their body weight) for the night.
In the end, the results found that when participants laid under a weighted blanket for an hour before bedtime, they showed about a 32 percent increase in salivary melatonin compared to when they used the lighter blanket.
“Our study is the first to suggest that using a weighted blanket may result in a more significant release of melatonin at bedtime,” the study says, adding that more studies are needed to find whether more melatonin will be produced during a whole night’s sleep when frequently using a weighted blanket over weeks to months.
While this study is quite small and just a first step exploring the health benefits of weighted blankets, it does suggest that this cozy blanket may indeed positively promote sleep.

This century, many countries will face a difficult situation: how to balance human needs with the requirements of natural systems that are vital for sustaining life on Earth The United Nations recently outlined the extent of the problem, saying that 2.7 billion people would face severe water shortages by 2025 if consumption continues at current rates. Today, an estimated1.2 billion people drink unclean water, and about 2.5 billion lack proper toilets or waste disposal systems. More than five million people die each year from diseases related to unclean water. All over the globe, humans are taking water out of the ground faster than it can be refilled.
In this difficult situation, water conservationists, such as Rajendra Singh in India, are working to find solutions to the water crisis. They have found creative ways to improve their local water situations.
Rajendra Singh in India together with his organization would provide the engineering advice and materials; the villagers would supply the work. The 30-foot-high earthen dam and reservoir (水库), known as a johad, could be finished in three months, before the start of the rainy season. If the rains were plentiful, the reservoir would not only provide enough surface water for drinking and agriculture, but would also refill dry wells.
In recent years, Singh’s johads have sprung up all over Rajasthan —— about 4,500 dams in about 1,000 villages. “If the villagers feel a johad is their own, they will maintain it,” said Singh. “This is a very sustainable, self-reliant system. I can say confidently that if we can manage rain in India in traditional ways, there will be sufficient water for our growing population.”
Some people still hope that new technology, such as the desalination (淡化) of seawater, will solve the world’s water problems. “But the fact is, water conservation is where the big gains are to be made,” says Sandra Postel of the Global Water Policy Project. The job that people like Rajendra Singh do offers inspiration for carrying out timely and lasting solutions to the world’s water concerns.

I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running. China’s technique of growing Juncao, the herbal plant used in the growing of edible mushrooms, has contributed to global poverty reduction, agronomist Lin Zhanxi said at the Delegates’ Passage before the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China on Oct.16,2022.
“We offer training at home and abroad, send our experts to teach local farmers, and we do serve them heart and soul as our brothers,” said Lin, the chief scientist of the National Juncao Technology Research Center and a professor at Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, who discovered and shares this mushroom-growing technology beyond China for years. The technique was later promoted from East China’s Fujian province to other areas in the country and has even reached countries across the world.
As a fungi (真菌) expert, Lin said he first came up with the idea of using Juncao grass instead of wood for producing mushrooms in the 1970s. In 1971, Lin was the first person to suggest the idea of cultivating edible fungi in chopped-up wild grass. After an investigation in rural areas in Fujian province in 1983, he decided to do research to put his idea into practice. At the end of 1986, Lin saw the first Juncao mushroom growing in his laboratory. Since then, Lin and his team have developed the technology by using 45 different kinds of grasses as Juncao fungi grass.
Juncao moved 17,700 farmers out of poverty in Northwest China’s Ningxia Hui autonomous region. The technique has been promoted to 106 countries and regions around the world.
Twenty years ago, villagers in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea began to learn this modern biological technology with the help of Chinese agronomists. A small Swedish study found evidence of increased melatonin (褪黑素) in healthy adults who used a weighted blanket before bed.
For many people who struggle with anxiety and poor sleep, weighted blankets are one cozy, wellness luxury well worth the small investment. Many shoppers swear by the calming benefits of weighted blankets, reporting better sleep, lower stress and anxiety, and overall increased feelings of relaxation.
But scientifically speaking, there aren’t many studies to confirm the benefits of lying under a weighted blanket. That’s why researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden carry out a small study to find out whether using a weighted blanket — compared to using a light blanket— can actually help boost sleep-promoting chemicals. such as melatonin and oxytocin.
Twenty-six young, healthy adults participated in the study. In stage one they were covered with a weighted blanket (weighing about 12 percent of their body weight) for one hour before bedtime, followed by an eight-hour sleep window. Researchers collected saliva (唾液) samples during the pre-sleep hour to measure changes in melatonin and other hormone (荷尔蒙) materials. In stage two, participants were covered with a light blanket (2.4 percent of their body weight) for the night.
In the end, the results found that when participants laid under a weighted blanket for an hour before bedtime, they showed about a 32 percent increase in salivary melatonin compared to when they used the lighter blanket.
“Our study is the first to suggest that using a weighted blanket may result in a more significant release of melatonin at bedtime,” the study says, adding that more studies are needed to find whether more melatonin will be produced during a whole night’s sleep when frequently using a weighted blanket over weeks to months.
While this study is quite small and just a first step exploring the health benefits of weighted blankets, it does suggest that this cozy blanket may indeed positively promote sleep.

This century, many countries will face a difficult situation: how to balance human needs with the requirements of natural systems that are vital for sustaining life on Earth The United Nations recently outlined the extent of the problem, saying that 2.7 billion people would face severe water shortages by 2025 if consumption continues at current rates. Today, an estimated1.2 billion people drink unclean water, and about 2.5 billion lack proper toilets or waste disposal systems. More than five million people die each year from diseases related to unclean water. All over the globe, humans are taking water out of the ground faster than it can be refilled.
In this difficult situation, water conservationists, such as Rajendra Singh in India, are working to find solutions to the water crisis. They have found creative ways to improve their local water situations.
Rajendra Singh in India together with his organization would provide the engineering advice and materials; the villagers would supply the work. The 30-foot-high earthen dam and reservoir (水库), known as a johad, could be finished in three months, before the start of the rainy season. If the rains were plentiful, the reservoir would not only provide enough surface water for drinking and agriculture, but would also refill dry wells.
In recent years, Singh’s johads have sprung up all over Rajasthan —— about 4,500 dams in about 1,000 villages. “If the villagers feel a johad is their own, they will maintain it,” said Singh. “This is a very sustainable, self-reliant system. I can say confidently that if we can manage rain in India in traditional ways, there will be sufficient water for our growing population.”
Some people still hope that new technology, such as the desalination (淡化) of seawater, will solve the world’s water problems. “But the fact is, water conservation is where the big gains are to be made,” says Sandra Postel of the Global Water Policy Project. The job that people like Rajendra Singh do offers inspiration for carrying out timely and lasting solutions to the world’s water concerns.

W: Yes, but the weather is different here.
M: Do you like it more here
W: Well, London can be warm and sunny in the summer. But in the winter, it can be very cold and rainy.
M: How do you travel to work
W: Usually I go by underground, because it’s quicker than bus or taxi. But the tickets are more expensive than in Athens.
M: Is life in London expensive
W: Well, supermarkets aren’t, but restaurants are very expensive. English people don’t eat in restaurants as much as Greeks.
M: Are English people very different from Greek people
W: Yes, in some ways.
M: How about the people here at work
W: Those I work with are very nice, and I’ve got some good friends here in London. We often go out together.
M: Where
W: Sometimes we go to a bar for a drink. And last Saturday it was my birthday.
M: Oh! Happy birthday for last Saturday!
W: Thank you. We went to an Italian restaurant. It was lovely!
M: Oh, very nice!

Good afternoon. Today, I will be giving you the study guide for your coming exam. Although it will cover all15 chapters of our textbooks, you will only be tested on what I give you today. So, if you pay close attention, the exam should be pretty straightforward. As I said last Friday, there will be a total of 10 essay questions. You will need to use a minimum of three concepts you have learned from each chapter in responding to each of the questions. I will provide extra credit questions at the end of the exam.
If you have any questions after class, come to see me at my office. I will be available for the rest of this week and the beginning of next week. The exam will be next Wednesday. Anyone who needs to make up the exam may do so on the following Monday. However, you must be able to provide a doctor’s note or a written letter from your parents explaining your situation in order to take the makeup exam. There will be no exceptions. Any questions
