In the summer of 1952, six-year-old Paul was playing outside in Dallas, Texas, when he suddenly felt his neck hurt and his head was pounding. When he went inside to find his mum, she immediately knew what was wrong. One of the worst polio (小儿麻痹症) outbreaks the country had ever seen was sweeping the US.
Paul’s mum took him to their doctor, who confirmed her guess — he had polio. The doctor advised that he rest at home, as the hospital was already overflowing with sick children. But Paul quickly deteriorated and then he was struggling to breathe. He was rushed to Parkland Hospital and began to lose consciousness (意识).
When he woke up, he was in an iron lung. An iron lung is a huge, airtight (密封的) metal box that helps polio patients to breathe. The next 18 months, he was unable to talk in hospital. He tried to make friends with other children by communicating with his eyes.
Paul was determined not to be defeated after knowing his condition. Paul learned a special breathing technique known as frog breathing. With the help of this technique, he could leave the iron lung for short amounts of time. Even so, it was difficult for Paul to lead a normal life.
He was determined to get a good education, but he wasn’t always able to write, so he learned to memorize information rather than take notes. He was home-schooled, and in 1967, at 21, he graduated from high school. He went on to receive a scholarship to the Southern Methodist University.
Paul became a world record holder in 2022 after spending the longest amount of time living in an iron lung. To add to his achievements, Paul spent more than eight years writing a memoir called Three Minutes for a Dog: My Life in an Iron Lung. He expected it to encourage more people like him to fight against their fate (命运).
4. What did Paul do when feeling uncomfortable in the summer of 1952

6. How did Paul break away from his iron lung for a short while
A. By staying at home. B. By leading a lifestyle like frogs.
C. By breathing in a special way. D. By communicating with new friends.
7. What did Paul expect his memoir to convey
A. Success isn’t achieved overnight. B. People should avoid giving in to their fate.
C. Setting up new life aims is necessary. D. Living in an iron lung is challenging.

Scientists have discovered that the panda, long considered a bit of a loner (喜独处者), has a surprisingly active social life, communicating with friends and family in a way that’s similar to sharing status (状态) updates on Facebook.
In the study on bears in China’s Wolong Nature Reserve Michigan State University(MSU) researchers focused instead on the trees, because it was on certain trees that the animals would leave scent (气味) signals for others. And the messages turned out to be surprisingly complex.
“Once you’ve gotten an eye for it, you can see the scent-marking trees, which are dirtied with a waxy (像蜡的) substance — and the pandas seem to be doing this a lot,” said lead author Thomas Connor. “It was pretty evident they were exchanging information through scent- marking behaviour.”
“These scent trees are a form of social media,” said Ken Frank, a professor from MSU. “Like Facebook, it’s asynchronous, meaning you don’t have to be in the same place at the same time. It allows one to broadcast to many, and it’s a record. A panda marking a tree isn’t so different from a Facebook post.”
While pandas may not be posting about things similar to those on a human social media network, they can let others know they frequent the territory by “checking in” to that tree, and they can leave details about sex, age, personality and physical size. By smelling a marked tree, a panda can determine if it has met the posters before, and pick up other information such as sex, advantage and size — all characteristics that can help another individual “read the room” without being in the presence of another bear.
“The discoveries in this study throw new light on how pandas use their habitat,” said senior author Jianguo Liu from MSU. “Pandas are a part of coupled human and natural systems where humans share their habitat. Anything we can learn about how they live and what they need can ultimately help info rm good conservation policies and maybe understand our own behaviour a little more.”
8. What is the new finding about pandas
A. They enjoy being alone more. B. They post updated status.
C. They get together frequently. D. They have an active social life.
9. What plays an important role in pandas’ social behaviours
A. Wax. B. Scent-marking trees. C. Habitat. D. Posters.
10. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A. Contents of pandas’ communication. B. Frequency of pandas’ communication.
C. Cause and effect of the study. D. Significance of the study.
11. What can this study help do
A. Lead pandas to make friends. B. Protect pandas better.
C. Set up more habitats. D. Improve human’s behaviour.

Aiming to advance a more sustainable future, the Netherlands has introduced cycling paths lined with photovoltaic cells (光伏电池) to harvest solar energy. Two of the country’s cycling paths were covered with photovoltaic coating by a construction company named Colas and BAM Royal Group under its Wattway project, with a surface area of 1,000 m each. “This is the first project of this size in the country,” said a statement by the firm.
Wattway has introduced a new solar panel technology with remarkable thinness and strength. These photovoltaic panels adhere seamlessly to (无缝附着在) surfaces such as bicycle paths and parking lots, avoiding the need for extensive civil engineering projects. The technology allows electricity generation without occupying agricultural land or destroying natural landscapes.
Each panel consists of traditional photovoltaic cells that efficiently change solar energy into electricity. “These extremely delicate cells are coated with a special substance, sufficiently translucent (半透明的) to let in sunlight and resistant enough to bear vehicle traffic,” said the company website. Furthermore, the surface is specially treated to provide the same level of grip (抓力) as conventional road mixes, ensuring functionality and safety.
The technology enables equipment linked to Wattway to achieve energy autonomy, including diverse applications such as charging stations for electric bicycles, closed-circuit security cameras, bus shelters, and dynamic signs.
In the Netherlands, South Holland, North Brabant, and North Holland provinces cooperate on a unified programme. At the same time, Utrecht pursues a separate initiative, focusing on pilot projects that integrate solar panels into bicycle paths. The primary objective is to generate sustainable electricity by making use of existing road space without the necessity for additional land allocation.
Moreover, the Dutch project aims to potentially contribute to establishing a practical market for solar energy production on bike paths, specifically emphasizing the extensive35,000 km of cycle paths in the Netherlands, presenting a great opportunity for harvesting solar power.
12. What is the function of photovoltaic cells
A. Changing solar energy into electricity. B. Absorbing more sunlight freely.
C. Providing the strong level of grip. D. Ensuring modernization.
13. What can we know about the new solar panel technology from the text
A. It may destroy some natural landscapes.
B. Utrecht fails to engage in it.
C. It can be used for more than charging electric bicycles.
D. It can’t balance the paths’ functionality and safety.
14. What does the last paragraph imply
A. The cycling paths bring large profits.
B. The project is a challenge.
C The drawbacks of solar power are potential.
D. The future of solar energy on bike paths is promising.
15. What is a suitable title for the text
A. The Netherlands Is Well-known for Its Expansive Cycling Facilities
B. Solar Panels Transform Dutch Cycling Paths into Green Energy Passages
C. New Technology Enables Equipment Linked to Wattway to Achieve Energy
D. North Brabant and North Holland Cooperate on a Unified Programme

A. Delay(拖延) the funny.
B. You don’t have to tell a new joke.
C. If you have a funny thought, record it as an audio note.

For many time-poor, health-conscious people, the must-have kitchen device at the moment is an air fryer. From top chefs to humble students, many are singing the praises of the device that seems ___36___ (be) flying off the shelves at shops and online. One British department store reported sales increased ___37___ (considerable) last year. But are they really so good

About eight months ago I began a ride to Buenos Aires, Argentina where people speak Spanish, via a one-way ticket with the love of my life. It wasn't as easy as it sounds. I wasn't throwing things in my suitcase and cashing out my bank account while kissing friends and family goodbye.
My boyfriend and I were recent graduates suffering economic troubles with no place to go. We had always wanted to go abroad to teach English, but weren't sure where we'd end up. My boyfriend, who is an optimist and fluent in Spanish, was very excited. At one o' clock in the morning after an argument over my fear, I just told him to book the tickets and I'd feel better.
Well, I thought I'd feel better. We finally booked our long anticipated flight. I sat on the bed wondering why I felt so frightened of going. It had been a childhood dream of mine to travel abroad. It was rather terrifying, and for the first time in my life I was afraid of an adventure.
Surprisingly, as I looked at our online plan of the trip, my stomach sank. Sickness filled my days when I looked around knowing I was going to leave everything I knew. I rationalized (使合理化) every excuse to get out of going but I reminded myself not to give up and that everything would work out. But the questions still popped up in my mind. Was I making a mistake Was this risk going to be worth every penny and hardship
I tried telling myself to calm down and to just take the risk. I knew that if I could just get my bottom into my window seat that everything would be fine. But even then my fear didn't subside (减弱).
It wasn't until the plane took off that I realized I had done it. We were twenty thousand miles in the air, and nine hours ahead of us was awaiting an entirely different world. But the fear was ever present. After a week of being a tourist, the fear remained hidden under a layer of excitement.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was only able to say a few phrases in Spanish that I remembered from middle school.

【答案】One possible version: I was only able to say a few phrases in Spanish that I remembered from middle school. I stayed in the hotel as much as possible because I was afraid to go out and communicate with others, let alone take a bus by myself and get lost in some bad part of town. I couldn't sleep, and I was thousands of miles from home. With time. the fear slowly dissolved, and the unfamiliar became familiar. I kept on trying despite my reluctance and faked a smile when I wanted to scream and run. With the help of my boyfriend, I made rapid progress in speaking Spanish.
We found jobs and an apartment within three weeks of arrival. I became an English teacher in a primary school. Everything worked out because I kept a positive affirmation despite the fear. Many of my friends made excuses for themselves by letting me know how easy it was for me to just up and leave to a foreign country because of my circumstances, especially having a boyfriend who spoke fluent Spanish. Yes, some of the opportunities I was afforded made the journey easier, but we worked really hard. I always tell my friends not to let fear paralyze us. Close our eyes and imagine that everything will work out.
