What do you know about the Amazon Rainforest
It is roughly (粗略地) the same size as 48 states in the U.S.
It is the largest rainforest in the world.
The forest consists of four layers.
The emergent layer (树冠层): the top layer; trees may reach the height of 200 feet.
The canopy (上层): much of the action happens; fruits and flowers grow.
The understory (下层): thick and little air movement; plants with large and broad leaves.
The forest floor: the lowest area; lack of sunlight; few plants.
It is known as the “lungs of the planet” because it produces over 20% of the world’s oxygen.
It is a treasure (宝藏) house of species which can be used for food or medicine.
There is a major danger to these irreplaceable (独一无二的) plants and animals: people.
Due to human activities such as deforestation (滥伐森林) and forest fire, about 20 percent of the rainforest has already been destroyed.
