Mary and I were good friends and we could talk about everything. We went to school together and worked through difficult problems together. We were honest with each other. So we believed that nothing could damage our friendship.
It was the day of our examination. The room was so quiet that even the sound of a pin dropping could be heard from miles away. Papers rustled as students shuffled (翻阅) through their belongings, searching for pencils and erasers. Some sat nervously in their seats, tapping their feet or drumming their fingers on the desk. Others sat perfectly still, burying their heads in their textbooks, trying to study at the eleventh hour. The atmosphere was tense, filled with a mixture of expectation and anxiety. " Keep all your things. The examination is starting," the examiner announced as she handed out papers. Then she returned to her chair and sat down.
The clock on the wall ticked away loudly, each passing second adding to the mounting pressure. Outside, everything seemed normal. But inside, it felt like chaos. Everyone was nervous, shuffling papers and fidgeting (坐立不安) in their seats. I opened my paper with trembling hands, and my eyes stared hard at the questions, hoping that the answers would appear by themselves. I turned to the next page. The questions just seemed to get harder and harder. I glanced around the room and realized I was not alone in my struggle. Then, I spotted Mary, my best friend. She looked as cool as a cucumber as if she were not even worried at all. There was no way she found this paper easy. No way. Suddenly, I caught sight of her fumbling(胡乱摸索) with something in her hand. She was cheating, actually!

The questions in front of me were not clear as my mind was occupied with Mary's actions.
I knew I had to make a decision. Should I report her But she was my best friend. Or should I just pretend that I didn't see anything But that would mean going against my principles.
After much thought, I decided that I wouldn't report her but couldn't just let this slide.
Friendship was important, and so was honesty.
When the examination ended, I waited for Mary outside the classroom.
I told her how disappointed I was and how her actions had put our friendship on the line.
Mary finally broke down and admitted that she had been so afraid of failing that she had made a terrible mistake.
We both knew that there would be serious consequences for what she had done.
In the end, we decided to go to the teacher together.
It was a difficult decision, but it was the right one.
Our friendship was tested like never before, but we also knew that if we could get through this with honesty, it might be stronger in the long run.
