In much of the western United States, drought and access to fresh water is a critical issue. However, recently California came up with a novel soltion. The state approved regulations that allow agencies to purify wastewater for drinking. This recycled wastewater may be consumed in homes, schools, and businesses.
As the population in California has exploded in recent decades, the state has struggled to meet demands for fresh water. Recycled wastewater will allow the state to increase access to the precious resource.
Recycled wastewater is not new to the state. It has previously been used in ice hockey rinks(冰球场),for crops, and to generate artificial snow. But now, water agencies will have the option to put recycled wastewater back into pipes for drinking. California is only the second state to allow purified wastewater to be consumed. The first was Colorado in 2022.
While the idea of drinking recycled wastewater may be off-putting, regulators spent more than a decade developing rules and regulations to ensure safety. Independent groups of scientists also reviewed the state’s rules around recycled wastewater consumption. All water will be treated for pathogens(病原体)and viruses before being available for consumption.
So far, the state’s plan has met with approval from large water agencies. Many of them have plans to construct wastewater recycling projects over the next few years. In Southern California, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has set a goal aiming to produce 150 million gallons of direct and indirect recycled water per day. This water will be in the pipesof the 19 million people throughout the six counties that the agency serves.
Officials are aware that a certain amount of public convincing may still be necessary. However, they remain optimistic about the future of the project, reminding consumers that the water is safe, and that recycled water is already in use in California.

The early 19th century French writer Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, famous for his observations about the pleasures of food and eating, beautifully summarized the positive power of eating outdoors.
He called outdoor dining, “perfect freedom,” in which “the universe is diners’ drawing room and the sun their lamp.” He continues, noting that eating outdoors, people "have appetite, nature’s special gift, which lends to such a meal the liveliness unknown indoors, however beautiful the indoor surroundings.”
Research supports Brillat-Savarin’s poetic insights with suggestions that eating outdoors can offer benefit of stress reduction. This stands to reason, given that studies have shown that as little of 20minutes outdoors-with or without food and drink-can lower the stress hormone cortisol(激素皮质醇).
In a food context, this lower stress level helps us pay attention to what we’re eating. We enjoy and taste food in a more focused way than when we’re inside. Eating with attention, the wellness writer Mitra Malek notes, increases both concentrationand joy: “Being mentally present when we eat...helps us better notice how pleasurable food is.” If you’ve ever thought that even a simple sandwich tastes better at the beach, you naturally understand the connection between fresh, open air and the mental space to enjoy every bite.
Research also shows that eating outdoors can heighten immunity(免疫力).Our immune systems are better equipped to resist the attack of diseases when we spend time in nature. One Japanese study linked time in the woods increased immune-boosting cells called NK cells, with the benefit lasting up to seven days after the natural experience.
As you taste a crisp salad, a dish of ice cream or a meal fresh off the grill(烤架),take the time to congratulate yourself for choosing to eat in Brillat-Savarin’s universal outdoor drawing room, investing in your health and welness-and just enjoying the beautiful world in which you live.
32. What does Brillat-Savarin mean by saying outdoor dining provide "perfect freedom"
A. Human can feel close to nature. B. People can get more diet freedom.
C. Life is independent of the environment. D.Beautiful surroundings matters.
33. Why do researchers highly recommend eating outdoors
A. It can increase the stress hormone cortisol.
B. It can ease pressure and boost immunity.
C. It can raise our environmental awareness.
D. It can help people spend more time in nature.
34. How does a lower stress level help us when eating outdoors
A. It makes us eat faster and save time.
B. It makes us more focused on the food.
C. It makes us enjoy the surroundings more.
D. It exercises our immune system’s strength.
35. What does the author encourage readers to do when eating outdoors
A. Care about the weather. B. Rush through their meals.
C. Appreciate the experience. D. Eat salads and ice cream.

With planes, cars, buses, cruises, and all sorts of new technologies out there, you might wonder: Why do people still travel by train 36 Whether you’re rolling through the hills of Scotland, or traveling domestically on our Canadian Rockies tour, the benefits will become clearer than the rivers and lakes you’ll pass by along the way.

38
If you’re on atrain, it’s easy to get up and stretch your legs. You can walk to the buffet car or go to toilet at any time. It’s better for the planet.
One of the top advantages of train travel is that it’s the most eco-friendly way to travel, apart from walking or bicycling. Rail trips send out 75% less greenhouse gas than cars. In some countries, trains account for less than 3% of all transport gas emissions. 40
A. It’s comfortable.
B. It’s a historic mode of travel.
C. Simply walk on the train, and you’re set.
D. Just hop on board any of our train tours and find out!

As I reached the last mile marker of a challenging 26-mile journey across the five districts of New York City, I had already battled high temperatures and moments of despair, giving all I had to make it this far. With whatever energy I could get from my 47-year-old body, I increased my pace, realizing that I was about to achieve my first marathon finish.
But first. let me take a step back to a few years earlier. My daughter had just completed her first 5K. I thought it looked like fun, and wanted to run with her. I suggested we both go out for a jog to begin to prepare. By the time I got to the end of the next street, I was huffing and puffing(气喘吁吁),dripping with sweat. I could not go on. No longer than four minutes after we left the house, I was asking to walk back. My daughter, giggling(咯咯笑),walked me back home.
Here I was in my mid-forties, a Creative Director at a major publication focusing on health, and not able to run a mile. In addition, I was carrying more weight than I had ever been in my life, and noticing how easily upset I was getting by little things that popped up each day.
Working at Men’s Health, I am surrounded by young staff who are taking care of their health and exercise regularly. As the lead in the Art department, I spend my days visualizing waysto inspire the rest of the world to care just as much. Surely, I could turn myself around and get fit.
"How could I possibly I fit it in I am so busy," became an easy excuse-so I took small steps. At first, it was just committing to time on Saturday and Sunday to go out for a jog, each time trying to make it a little further than I went the previous run.

读后续写
As the months went on, my runs became longer. I noticed that my clothes were getting a little looser. Running burned calories and gave me something to look forward to on weekend. It had the surprise effect of better sleep, which added to my running enjoyment even more. Another thing I never expected was the mental effect that running had on me. I had more patience. I was feeling better about my days. I found that while on a run, I could set worries aside for a short period and allow myself to just be present in the movement.
A few months later, an opportunity arose to run the New York Marathon. Without overthinking it, I signed up. I definitely was not able to run 26.2 miles when I signed up, but that was part of the attraction. What if I failed or only made it halfway “Who cares” is what I learned. In the last 100 meters, I heard my name and spotting my daughter in the grandstand. I waved and smiled. I ended up crossing the finish line. Although it wasn’t the fastest time of the day, I proudly made my way through the finishers’ area to receive my medal.

W: So have you decided which book to buy
M: Well, I really want this book about time travel. But that one about computers is more useful to my studies.
W: OK. You take that book and I’ll take the book about time travel. You can read it after I finish it.
M: That’s great!

W: I often play badminton at the local sports center. What about you
M: I also go to the sports center, but I prefer playing tennis.
W: Well, I seldom play tennis. The sport requires a lot of energy and makes me tired.
M: But it can be fun if you have a good partner to play with.

M: Are you going on the trip abroad for this Christmas holiday
W: Yes, I’m going to Sydney of Australia for my Christmas holiday. Where are you going
M: I’m flying to Hawaii.
W: Are you travelling by yourself
M: Well, yes. But I’m going to meet my parents at Hawaii.
W: I’m flying alone too. But I’m going to stay at the host family during my stay in Sydney. I’ll meet them at the airport.
M: That sounds very exciting. I’m sure that you’ll have a wonderful experience.
W: I think so too. I can’t wait to see the koalas. I really love animals.

M: Thank you for coming to the show, Mrs. Hill. So why did you decide to give away your coats
W: It was one day during the winter of 2017. I looked out the window of my office building and saw a cleaner walking down the sidewalk without a coat.
M: Did you go to talk to her
W: No. But I couldn’t stand the thought that I had many jackets in the back of my closet while that woman had to walk in cold winter without one. So I decided to take my old coats to the sidewalk with a sign telling people to take one if they needed it.
M: Were people around you surprised
W: They were at first. But then my colleagues did that too and then more people came to join us. Now people just know to come and drop off coats, and they also know they can take as needed.
M: Well, at the end of the show, I want to thank you for doing that for those in need.
W: I just did what I should.
Text 9
M: Here’s an article from today’s paper. I thought you might be interested. It shows that people with strong connections tend to live longer and happier lives.
W: Oh, this is what we were chatting about last week.
M: That’s the reason I brought it for you. Mental health experts show that positive relationships can reduce stress, which is often linked to health problems. When you spend time with your family and friends, your mind produces feel-good chemicals.
W:I have focused on eating well for self-improvement, but should I consider this along with exercise and sleep
M: Yes, these are all important but keeping good relationships is powerful. Owning a pet, calling relatives or eating dinner with friends can positively affect health.
W: I’ve always dreamt of keeping a dog at home. Maybe I’ ll visit a pet shop this weekend.
M: Great idea, just remind yourself to enjoy those meaningful moments with your loved ones.
Text 10
Fellow scientists, I finally have some good news to report. As you know, I have been studying sea life for three months in New York Harbor. Today, I can finally present some hard evidence that sharks have returned to these waters. For the past two weeks, I’ve been helping to film the Shark Week program for the Discovery Channel on TV. My job was to sit in a boat near a dead whale and check it for shark bites. It’s been a very hot July, so this wasn’t the easiest task. After five days, I noticed there were several large shark bites along the stomach of the whale. I was thrilled! Because this means our protection efforts are starting to pay off. Sharks’ returning to a former hunting ground indicates that the waters are cleaner and healthier. We have been trying to clean up this area and the rivers that poured into the sea for many years. I want to take this opportunity to thank the Friends of the Environment Society. You have all made your best effort so that future generations can live in a clean world.
