In the woods waits the only person with whom I can be myself—Gale. I can feel the muscles in my
face relaxing, my pace quickening as I climb the hills to our place, a rock ledge overlooking a valley. The
sight of him waiting there brings on a smile. Gale says I never smile except in the woods.
“Hey, Katniss,” says Gale.
“Look what I shot.” Gale holds up a loaf of bread with an arrow stuck in it, and I laugh. It’s real
bakery bread. Fine bread like this is for special occasions.

“What did it cost you ” I said.
“Just a squirrel.”
“My sister Prim left us a cheese.” I pull it out.
His expression brightens at the treat. “Thank you, Prim. We’ll have a real feast.”
Suddenly he falls into a Capitol accent as he mimics(模仿 ) Effie Trinket, the dramatically positive
woman who arrives once a year from the Capitol to announce the names to play the death game.
“l almost forgot! Happy Hunger Games!—”
“—be ever in your favor!” I finish the sentence in the same tone.
We have to joke about it because the alternative is to be scared to death. Besides, the Capitol accent is
so affected, almost anything sounds funny in it.
I watch as Gale pulls out his knife and slices the bread. He could be my brother. Straight black hair,
olive skin, we even have the same gray eyes. But we’re not related. Most of the families who work the
mines resemble one another this way.
Gale spreads the bread slices with the soft goat cheese. The day is glorious. The food is wonderful.
Everything would be perfect if this really was a holiday, if all the day off meant roaming the mountains
with Gale, hunting for tonight’s supper. But instead we have to be standing in the square waiting for the
names to be called out and then die in the Hunger Games before long.
“We could do it, you know,” Gale says quietly.
“What ” I ask.
“Leave the district. Run off. Live in the woods. You and I, we could make it,” says Gale.
I don’t know how to respond. The idea is so preposterous.
“If we didn’t have so many kids,” he adds quickly.
They’re not our kids, of course. They are our sisters and brothers. And you may as well count in our
mothers, too, because how would they live without us Who would fill those mouths that are always asking
for more

Residents of India’s capital New Delhi choked in a poisonous smog Wednesday as worsening air
pollution surged past 50 times the World Health Organization’s recommended daily maximum.
Many in the city cannot afford air filters(净化器)nor do they have homes where they can effectively
seal from the misery of foul smelling air.
Cooler temperatures and slow-moving winds trap deadly pollutants each winter, stretching from
mid-October until at least January. At dawn on Wednesday, hazardous pollutant levels in parts of the urban
area of more than 30 million people topped 806 micrograms per cubic meter, according to monitoring firm
IQAir.
That is more than 53 times the World Health Organization recommended daily maximum of dangerous
cancer-causing microparticles known as PM2.5 pollutants that enter the bloodstream through the lungs. By
midday, when air usually is at its best, it eased to about 25-35 times above danger levels, depending on
different districts.
The city is blanketed in acrid smog each year, primarily blamed on stubble(秸秆) burning by farmers
in neighboring regions to clear their fields for ploughing, as well as factories and traffic emissions. But a
report by The New York Times this month, based on air and soil samples it collected over five years,
revealed the dangerous smoke and gases released from power plants burning the city’s landfill garbage
mountains also gave rise to the smog.
The India Meteorological Department said that at least 18 regional airports had a visibility lower than
1,000 meters — even dropping below 500 meters in Delhi.
India’s Supreme Court last month ruled that clean air was a fundamental human right, ordering both
the central government and state-level authorities to take action. But critics say arguments between rival
politicians heading neighboring states — as well as between central and local authorities – have
compounded the problem.
Politicians from the central government are accused of not wanting to anger key figures in their
constituencies( 选 区 ), particularly powerful farming groups. City authorities have launched several
initiatives to tackle pollution, which have achieved far less than expected in practice.
28. Which of the following contributes to the severe smog in New Delhi
A. New Delhi Residents’ limited access to air filters.
B. Low temperature and unfavorable air conditions.
C. Intentional burning of stubble by both farmers and factories.
D. Poisonous smoke and gases released from landfill garbage mountains.
29. What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Give rise to. B. Bring an end to. C. Shelter from. D. Fight against.
30. What can be inferred from the passage
A. The central government and local authorities seek to cooperate and address the issue.
B. Statistics show the air quality of the India capital is at its best in the morning.
C. New Delhi has the poorest visibility across the country on that particular day.
D. Politicians from central government are reluctant to upset influential individuals.
31. What is a suitable title of the passage
A. India’s capital chokes on toxic smog

When Noah Lyles, an American sprinter, won gold in the Olympics 100-metre race in August, he held
his hands out in front of him, wrists together and fingers extended, as though getting ready to catch a large
ball. The gesture may have seemed odd, but fans of Japanese animation knew immediately that Mr. Lyles, a
die-hard fan of the genre, was making a reference to a popular animation series, “Dragon Ball”.
Once a domestically consumed product “watched by people with no friends at school”, as one veteran
producer recalls, anime has become a global sensation. There is an aesthetic meaning: anime is hand-drawn
and usually two-dimensional, unlike the photorealistic 3D animation that has grown more common outside
Japan. The characters often resemble hyper-caffeinated Tintins, with unusually large, expressive eyes, small
noses, strange hair and easy-to-read emotions.
Recently anime has raced into people’s homes with Lyles-like speed. In 2023 Japan’s anime industry
hit a record high, with revenues of 339 billion ($2.3b billion). Two factors help explain anime’s surging
global popularity. The first is streaming, which made anime easier to find and watch. Fans no longer have
to depend on the decisions of network programmers or wait a week for another episode. They can explore
and discover on their own. Anime viewership boomed during the pandemic, as the world sat at home in
front of screens for months. Second, audiences have grown tired and suspicious of Hollywood’s neat
resolutions. As Susan Napier, a professor at Tufts University and expert on anime, explains, “Technology
hasn’t brought us the utopia we thought it would, and the post-cold-war world has become more dangerous
than we imagined,” which makes happily-ever-after endings implausible. Anime is willing to have heroes
killed off and characters suffer huge loss. At the same time, protagonists(主角) are often cute and relatable.
“It’s a dark world out there,” Ms. Napier says, so audiences “want that fluffy cuteness”.
Japan’s government noticed and eventually took action: in 2013 it launched an initiative called “Cool
Japan”, in which it invested some 90 billion to propel Japan’s creative industries abroad. It was a flop,
because of poorly chosen investments, but that has not stopped the government from trying again: it wants
to quadruple the value of Japan’s content industry by 2033.
“People are aware of a world that’s unstable and more dangerous and have less ability to believe in the
happily ever after,” Ms. Napier of Tufts suggests. Bad news for the world, but good for Japanese animators.
32. Why did Noah Lyles make the gesture in the first paragraph
A. To show his surprise at winning the race.
B. To demonstrate his readiness to catch a ball.
C. To pay admiration to his favorite animation series.
D. To signal his confidence in winning the future races.
33. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Japanese anime achieves greater success at home than abroad.
B. Japanese anime features characters with expressive and realistic design.
C. Japanese anime conveys an aesthetic meaning with 3D technology.
D. Japanese anime has undergone an expansion of audience.
34. Which of the following statements accounts for anime’s increasing global popularity
A. The pandemic makes audiences sit at home, exploring and discovering the episodes on their own.
B. Streaming enables fans to be independent of network schedules and saves waiting time.

C. Unlike Hollywood’s neat resolutions, anime creates unsatisfying endings to the heroes.
D. Technology fails to make the world safer, making happily-ever-after endings implausible.
35. What’s Japanese government’ attitude towards its anime industry
A. Supportive. B. Pessimistic. C. Cautious. D. Worried.
第二节(共 5小题; 每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
请将答案写在答题卷上。
Your colleague is the first one in and the last one to leave. They volunteer to take on every additional
task that comes your team’s way and they respond to emails within minutes. They’re working all the time,
whether from the office or from home. 36
Dealing with such a workmate can be challenging, but there are steps you can take to ease the negative
effects of their behavior on yourself and your team.
Depersonalize their actions.
37 , this is a classic example of a cognitive bias. In social psychology, this refers to the
tendency humans have to owe another person’s actions to their character or personality, while crediting our
own behavior to external or situational factors that are outside our control. In other words, your colleague is
probably not overworking to frighten or exceed you. Debias your thinking by considering other reasons for
their behavior.
38
Guilt can make it easy for you to fall into the same patterns as your colleague. You may start
comparing your capacity and output to theirs and wonder, “Am I really working hard enough ” Before you
begin overextending yourself in an effort to “catch up”, mind your mindset and be aware of extremist
thinking. Taking time off for self-care isn’t indulgent( 纵 容 的 ), rather it’s a precondition for your
performance.
Set boundaries.
Workaholics tend to have few boundaries. You’ll need to play defense by managing their expectations
around your response times and availability. Let’s say your colleague asks you to turn around a project brief
in less than 24 hours. You can push back and explain, “That’s not possible. If you have this sort of task in
the future, I’ll need at least a three days’ notice to work it into my schedule.” 39
Finally, remember to adjust your perspective on productivity. Despite the fact that you’re tempted to
evaluate your daily success based on the number of hours you work, it’s the quality of work you deliver
that matters most. 40
A. Resist peer pressure.
B. Accept your incapacity.
C. In short, you’re dealing with a workaholic, or a work enthusiast.
D. Being good at your job doesn’t mean working more but producing results.
E. If you blame yourself for failing to outperform your workaholic colleagues
F. While it’s tempting to assume your colleague is overworking to outshine you
G. You might also advocate for better systems and processes that replace excess effort.

Susan was about to close her drapes(窗帘) when she happened to see the candles 53 in Ellie’s
window. “It was if Hannah had taken her turn and put the menorah in your window for me to see.” Susan
said she 54 the lights and watched the candles with blurred eyes until they burned out.
Believing Hannah’s lights would never go out but be there in her heart when she needed reconnection

that Hannah had lit the last time it was her turn.

第二节(满分 25 分)

The stage lights in the music hall darkened, as the next school’s concert band settled onstage. The First
Chair, a young violinist, called upon each section to play, tuning them with precision and grace. The
moment the musical director appeared, a wave of applause filled the air. The annual High School Music
Festival was the highlight of my year. As a music teacher, I never missed a session, always amazed by the
extraordinary talents the musical directors inspired in their students. But this year might be my last visit.
With age catching up, my desire for retirement was growing stronger.
Honestly, there was always a touch of dissatisfaction and envy in my heart as I watched these school
bands, because I had never been able to develop a band to this level. I taught in a small primary school. My
students played beginner music, and they were happy when we managed to play from the start all the way
to the end of a piece, with all the instruments finishing together. The complexities of full tone, dynamic

control, and balance were beyond their abilities.
As the band opened with their first piece, the striking sound of violins, accompanied by the lively
notes of pianos, set my heart pounding. Wouldn’t it be great to be the musical director for one of these
massive high school bands I thought as the music transported me. When the last notes rang out, there was
a brief silence before thunderous applause erupted. My aging eyes scanned the stage, seeking familiar faces
among the performers. But my vision was no longer sharp enough to recognize anyone.
During the tea break, I headed toward the entrance hall. “Miss Jones!” a young man’s voice cut
through the crowd. I recognized the concert uniform he was wearing. It was the very violinist I had been
admiring, Puzzled, I searched his face for familiar features, It turned out to be Bradley, a former student of
mine who was difficult to forget, Schoolwork had been hard for him, and he had struggled through all his
subjects. It was a pleasant surprise to meet him here. We sat down and had a chat.

Dear Admissions Committee,
I am Li Hua, a high school student who is eager to apply for the summer course on Large
Language Models at your University. The following provides the details of my application.
I have been long captivated by the way AI interacts with language, as seen in trendy tools like
ChatGPT. My interest in this course is also driven by the desire to explore how AI processes and
generates text, a field where technology and language are blended in excitingly innovative ways.
In terms of personal strengths, I have a solid background in computer science and a passion for
linguistics. I am also a quick learner and enjoy tackling complex problems. These attributes, I
believe, position me well for success in this course.
Thank you for considering my application. I’m looking forward to your reply at your earliest
convenience.
Warm regards,
Li Hua
读后续写:
I remembered the day when he asked to join the school band. He came to my office, looking
down at his shoes, his hands fidgeting with the hem of his shirt. He stammered, “I... I’m not good
at any of my school subjects. I don’t know if I can handle music either. But... but I, I want to give it
a try.” But at that time, he was entirely different, his whole being radiating with energy as if he had
been transformed into another person. Because of his talent in music and constant efforts, he had
gained confidence and progress. Bradley held my hands tightly and said “Thank you for always
encouraging and trusting me.” Who could have thought that the violinist I had been admiring was
actually my own student Excited and relieved, I was smiling from ear to ear.
I was still smiling as I made my way back to the music hall. The stage lights in the music hall
darkened again, as the next school’s concert band settled onstage. At that moment, the feeling of
self-doubt and envy no longer haunted me. Weren’t those children on the stage also growing up
from primary school days Weren’t those children shining brightly also growing up from beginner
musicians Suddenly, I felt so glorious and honored to be a teacher in that small primary school,
because my devotion could also make a big difference. As the concert went on, each note seemed
to be a drop of sweet dew, falling softly and bringing a sense of pride to my heart.

听力文本:
(Text 1)
W: Aren’t we meeting Paul at 6:30
M: We were, but he sent me a message a moment ago suggesting 7:30 instead.
W: But I want to grab a coffee together before the game.
M: Well, the two of us still can. The game doesn’t start till eight.
(Text 2)
W: I can’t wait for Sunday!
M: Ah, yes, it’s your birthday.
W: Oh, don’t remind me. I never celebrate that. I am celebrating something though — I passed my
driver’s test and my sister is taking me out.
(Text 3)
W: You destroyed Peter’s laptop. Don’t you think you owe him an apology and maybe some money
M: Oh, come on! Why did he leave it open with a cup of tea right there
(Text 4)
W: Please, I just need a few minutes of your time to straighten out some of the facts.
M: I’ve already discussed the matter with your colleagues. I just don’t see the point of discussing
the obvious.
(Text 5)
W: I haven’t got a clue as to when we’re going to get our marks for last week’s exam.
M: Neither have I. Professor Hartford’s an excellent lecturer but he’s rarely very efficient at
administrative matters, is he
(Text 6)
W: Sorry I’m late. I couldn’t find a parking space nearby, so I had to park my car several blocks
away.
M: I hope you didn’t walk too far. So ... I called you because the lights in this room aren’t functioning.
W: OK. Does anybody need to use this room today
M: Well, I’m supposed to meet a job applicant after lunch ... but I can do it in another room.
(Text 7)
W: What do you think we should do today
M: Well, it’s our first day in the city so we should do some sightseeing.
W: How about renting bicycles and exploring the city on our own
M: But I wanted to take the bus that goes on a tour of the whole city. It has a guide who gives
information about the sights and it also makes stops if you want to eat or go shopping.
W: Not a bad idea, but we can do that another day. I’ll stick with my idea. It’s such a nice day and
we need some exercise.
M: You’re right.
(Text 8)
W: Mr. Lang, this is Trudy from Super Value. I am pleased to tell you we have found a buyer for
your house who will match your asking price.
M: Really That’s fantastic! How soon will he be able to move in
W: I already discussed that with him and he said he would be prepared to sign the contract at any
time and take possession as early as next week. He said he is eager to start decorating the house
and making it his own.
{#{QQABZQAUggiIABJAARhCAwVSCgEQkgACAYgOQAAEIAABiQFABAA=}#}
M: That’s OK. We can close the deal this Friday. Then I will make arrangements to have my furniture
moved to my new house across town this weekend.
(Text 9)
M: So, Barbara, you’re famous as a journalist, and you’ve written Nickel and Dimed based on your
research. Could you start by telling us why you do secret investigations
W: Sure. Interviews are fine, but sometimes you need to experience it yourself. By putting yourself
in the situation you’re investigating ... you can then write from a more informed point of view.
M: I see. So, what did you do
W: Well, I worked as a waitress, a hotel housekeeper, a nursing home assistant, and a supermarket
clerk. I spent a month in each low-paid job, working in Florida, Maine, and Minnesota.
M: Wow, that’s a lot of different jobs, and places! What exactly did you find out
W: Well, first, the rents were very high and the wages were so low. Also, you have to be a hard
worker! Interviewing people is one thing, but actually doing the job day to day shows you exactly
how hard these people’s lives are.
M: Hmm. And of course, Nickel and Dimed went onto be a very popular book. It was a New York
Times best seller.
W: Yes, I was really surprised at all the interest. I think it really opened people’s eyes, a firsthand
account like that. I hope my book can attract more attention, so as to improve the situation of people
in low-paid jobs.
(Text 10)
M: Considering gardening, people tend to picture an elderly man or woman in front of their house.
Yet a recent study among 2,000 young people aged between 18 and 34 has revealed that gardening
is becoming increasingly popular among young people. Kev Smith, who organized the survey, said
that the study showed that gardening suits everyone, whatever their age. On average, young adults
spend around two hours per week taking care of their plants. Two-thirds of participants also said
that they love shopping for gardening items, including plants, seeds and tools. Naturally, the item
that is bought most frequently is gardening gloves, probably the item that is most frequently used
too. The most popular place to grow plants is on the kitchen windows, while living rooms,
bathrooms, and balconies are also popular locations. The study also found that 60 per cent wish they
had access to more outside space than they do at present. However, 78 per cent believe you do not
actually need a big outdoor area to experience the benefits of gardening. Gardening is brilliant for
our minds. It includes concentrating on what you are doing right now, repetitive actions and using
all your senses, like touch and smell.
