Mr Smith is one of the most productive and influential bassists (贝斯手) in jazz history. During his 60 years' career, he has recorded more than 2,000 records, and he has no plan on slowing down.
“Age has not made me think slower,” Mr Smith says. “And it has not made me refuse gigs. What it has made me do is be thankful that I got this far playing an instrument with four strings.”
On May 10, 2022, For the Love of Mr Smith and Friends took place at Carnegie Hall, which was a one-night 85th birthday celebration. Mr Smith led three different bands performing highlights from his career.
Born in Ferndale, Michigan in 1937, Mr Smith started to play the cello(大提琴) at the age of 10, but switched to bass in high school because u e claimed opportunities were limited for black musicians to play classical music. He studied at the Eastman School of Music, and then went on to get his master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music. By the time he was25, he was one of the most popular players in jazz..
Mr Smith's most historic recordings came in the 1960s as the bassist in the second great Mr Miles. He says the band— with Mr Miles on trumpet; Mr Coleman and then Mr Wayne on saxophone, Mr Hancock on piano, and Mr Williamson on drums— never rehearsed(排练) before recording.
And Mr Smith has certainly helped a lot of musicians get better. Bassist Mr Clarke says that in the last 50 years, Mr Smith has been “the most important bass player”. “I remember as a young kid, I used to get his records,” Mr Clarke recalls. “I could tell he was very, very professional because the consistency was there from record to record; his sound, his ability, and then his flow.”
24. How many records did Mr Smith record each year on average
A. About 330. B. About 33. C. About 2,000. D. About 50.

Microplastics are found nearly everywhere on Earth and can be harmful to animals if they' re taken in. But it's hard to remove such tiny particles(微粒) from the environment, especially once they settle into corners and cracks at the bottom of waterways. Now, researchers in ACS' Nano Letters have created a light-activated fish robot that “swims” around quickly, picking up and removing microplastics from the environment.
Because microplastics can fall into cracks, they've been hard to remove from water environments. One solution that has been proposed is using small, flexible(柔韧的), and
self-propelled robots to reach these pollutants and clean them up. . But the traditional materials used for sold robots can be damaged easily in water environments. Another material called mother-of-pearl, also known as nacre, is strong and flexible, and is found on the inside surface of shells. Inspired by this natural substance, Xinxing Zhang and his colleagues wanted to try a similar type of gradient structure to create a durable(耐用的) and bendable material for soft robots.
Using the material, the researchers have created a fish robot that could move 2.67 body lengths per second—a speed that's faster than previously reported for other soft swimming robots. The researchers showed that the swimming fish robot could repeatedly take in nearby microplastics and transport them elsewhere.
The material could also recover itself after being cut, still keeping its ability to take in microplastics Because of the durability and speed of the fish robot, the researchers say that it could be used for monitoring microplastics and other pollutants in tough water environments.
28. Why are microplastics hard to remove
A. Because they are hard to find.
B. Because there are no tools to use.
C. Because they are in large quantities.
D. Because they are too small and hide in corners and cracks.
29. Which is a disadvantage of traditional materials
A. Difficult to store.
B. Rare to find.
C. Easy to damage.
D. Expensive to produce.
30. What mainly makes the fish robot suitable for monitoring microplastics
A. Its durability. B. Its size.
C. Its weight. D. Its shape.
31. Where is the text likely from
A. A fiction. B. A magazine. C. A film. D. A diary.

A recent study found that older women who exercise more have a lower chance of getting dementia(痴呆). Women aged 65 or older who did an extra 31 minutes of moderate-to- vigorous(中度到重度) physical activities each day had a 21 percent lower risk of developing dementia. Also, taking an extra 1,865 steps each day was linked to a 33 percent lower risk.
Andrea LaCroix, a professor at UC San Diego, explained why early action is important. “Dementia starts 20 years or more before symptoms appear, so it's important to start early to delay or prevent dementia,” she said. She also noted that physical activities are one of the best ways to lower the risk of dementia. “Prevention is key because once dementia is for sure, it is very hard to slow or recover. There is no way to treat it,” LaCroix added.
The study included 1,277 women from two Women's Health Initiative(WHI) studies. These women wore special devices called accelerometers(加速度计) for up to seven days to measure their physical activities and sitting time accurately(精确地) On average, the women took 3,216 steps, spent 276 minutes doing light physical activities, 45.5 minutes doing moderate-to-vigorous physical activities, and sat for 10.5 hours each day. Light activities included housework, gardening, or walking, while moderate-to-vigorous activities included fast walking.
The study also found that sitting for long periods did not increase the risk of dementia. This information is important for doctors and public health because it shows how much and what type of physical activities can lower the risk of dementia. The authors suggested that more research is needed with larger and more diverse groups, including men.
32. What is the goal of the study
A. To find a way[to treat dementia.
B. To examine the effects of medication on dementia.
C. To determine the relationship between diet and dementia risk.
D. To figure out the influence of physical activities on dementia risk.
33. What is the function of accelerometers
A. To get accurate location of the women.
B. To track the women's workout and sitting.
C. To help the women accelerate their movement.
D. To encourage more women to do physical activities.
34. Which of the following may lower the risk of dementia
A. Singing songs. B. Long sitting. C. Fast walking. D. Watching videos.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Physical activities may cut dementia risk
B. It is very difficult to slow down dementia
C. Early treatment for dementia is necessary
D. Exercising does good to the health of the aged

André woke up with the first light of dawn, his thoughts immediately turning to his mother. He knew she had worked tirelessly for years, juggling multiple jobs to support her family. Every day, she was the first to rise, her feet barely touching the ground as she went about her chores(杂活). Her hands, rough from years of hard work, told a story of love and sacrifice that André had grown up seeing. André decided to show his appreciation in an unforgettable way.
He tiptoed into Sophia's room, his sister still fast asleep. André gently shook her awake. Sophia's long, dark hair was tousled from sleep, and her eyes opened slowly, blinking in confusion.
“André What is it ” she said, rubbing her eyes.
“I want to do something really special for Mom,” André said, his eyes shining with determination. “She has done so much for us, and I think it's time we give back.”
Sophia sat up, her small face now serious. “I think that's a wonderful idea. But what can we do ”
André looked around the room, his mind racing. “I was thinking we could save up and book a trip for her to that place she always talks about— the beach town where she grew up.”
Sophia's face lit up. “That would be amazing! But how are we going to get enough money ”
André bit his lip, thinking. “I could take on extra chores around the neighborhood. Maybe mow lawns or walk dogs. And you could sell some of your handmade crafts at the local market.”
Sophia nodded, her eyes filled with excitement. “Let's do it! Mom will be so surprised.”
Over the next few weeks, both André and Sophia worked hard and the small jar where they were saving their earnings was gradually full. One evening, André and Sophia counted their money. They had almost enough. The next day, they went to the travel agency. The agent, a kind-looking woman with a bright smile, helped them book the trip.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
