阅读下列短文,从26~40各题所给的A、B、C和D项中选出最佳选项。
(A)
When I was young, I hated to learn languages. My father, Richard, could speak several languages. He was sure that I could also learn languages well. He always encouraged me to learn more. With his encouragement, I decided to go to Chile to learn Spanish after finishing university.
At weekends, I did a part-time job. I worked in a school for disabled children in a class of six. Only two children in the class could speak and neither of them could do it well. But I slowly realized that every child could communicate. They communicated in different ways. Some of them used body language to express themselves.
Others used their voices—they made noises. The noises changed when they had different feelings. They even “talked” to each other, having arguments and friendly talks like ordinary children. None of the children in that room could say a single sentence.
But they had a strong personality(性格), likes and dislikes, wishes and fears and they communicated every day. Slowly, I learnt not only Spanish but the language of every one of the children I cared for. It was encouraging to see these children talking with each other comfortably.
I made excuses for not trying all these years. And here were a group of disabled children showing me how important communication was. It really made me want to learn Spanish. In this way, I could express my personality through the methods they learnt.
From then on, I spent my evenings studying Spanish after work. I felt excited when I knew a new word. When I arrived in Chile, I couldn’t say a single word. But when I left, I could happily have a conversation. My life was going in a different direction. I learnt from those children that communication could open doors to something else—doors to friendship, happiness and excitement.

Many people have a fear of public speaking. According to a study, it has an influence on 3 in every 4 people. This fact is surprising and worrying. Luckily, the following suggestions will help you make a better speech. If you are having difficulty with your speech as well, please read them carefully.
Write note cards. Write main ideas on your cards. Put in some fun facts, questions, and other activities on the cards to share with the class. You may forget the words or sentences of your speech while note cards can remind you. They make you thrive. Your speech will be a perfect one. However, don’t look at your note cards for a long time while speaking.
Smile at your classmates. When it is time to speak, there’s nothing that can draw your classmates into your speech better than a good old-fashioned smile. Studies have shown that smiles are infections. That means once you smile, it's hard for everyone else not to smile. So if you want your speech to go off well, smile. That will make everyone smile and maybe those smiles will make you actually smile. You can get a lot of energy from those smiles.
Make eye contact. Nothing is more boring than listening to a speaker who always looks at the floor or at note cards. Please relax. Your class is made up of your friends and you talk to them all the time. Talk in the same way during the speech. Have a look at every person in the classroom at least once. That way, everyone will feel like you’re communicating with them. They may pay more attention to your speech, too. Also, you’ll look like you know what you’re talking about.
Use hand motions. Move your hands along as you talk, using them to express your key points and keep the class interesting. It will also lead your nervous energy into a better place.

Every 14 days, a language dies. There are many reasons for this. One is that some people believe that a language which is used more widely has stronger economic(经济的) power in social life. Because of this, young people often choose to learn a commonly used language. As a result, many languages that are used less are given up.
Another reason is that some languages aren’t written down. Guujaaw is a leader of the Haida Nation. His people have lived in the Queen Charlotte Islands, Canada, for more than 1,000 years. Traditionally, the language in this area isn’t written down, and people are worried that it will die one day.
But Guujaaw says, “We talk to each other, listen, visit, and believe in the spoken words. Expressing yourself without writing is natural.” However, writing has to become part of their lives, or their language isn’t able to stay alive.
When a language disappears, the culture of its speakers disappears. Language plays an important part in passing down culture. Without spoken language, the young can only learn their languages from the old. Elizabeth Lindsey, a language researcher, says, “When an elder dies, a library is burned.”
Also, language plays a part in humans’ understanding of nature. People in mountain areas often learn about plants and animals, and the relationship between them by word of mouth. David Harrison, a researcher on endangered languages, shows, “80% of plant and animal species(种类) haven’t been discovered by science. But that doesn’t mean they’re unknown to humans.”
Many languages are endangered. However, it’s not too late. It is time for the young to think seriously about their local languages. “No one becomes richer by giving up one language to learn another,” Harrison said.
( )37. Why do young people often choose to speak a commonly used language
A. Their local languages have been given up.
B. It is more powerful in social economic life.
C. It is easier to learn a commonly used language.
D. A commonly used language can be written down.

D. He is teaching his people the spoken language.
( )39. How do people in mountain areas often learn about nature
A. By reading books.
B. By word of mouth.
C. By studying at schools.
D. By working in mountains.
( )40. Which of the following does the writer agree with
A. People need to use commonly used languages more often.
