For the first time in its history, the International Olympic Committee has allowed a team of refugees(难民) to complete at the Games. All of the team’s members were forced to leave their home countries. Now they’ve come together to compete under the Olympic flag instead.
Making it to the Olympics is something eighteen-year-old swimmer Yusra has always dreamed of. But just last year, she was swimming for her life. She and her sister were forced to leave their home in Syria because of the war there. They were trying to get to Greece in a rubber dinghy (橡皮艇) with eighteen other refugees, when their boat broke down and began filling with water. Most of the people on board couldn’t swim, so she and her sister jumped in to help push it to shore.
Three hours later, they made it to safety, and eventually to Germany as refugees. Refugees are people who have left their home country because their lives are threatened by war, bad treatment or violence---often because of their race, gender or beliefs. Around the world, more than 60 million people are in this situation. And some of them, like Yusra, are elite athletes who have trained all their lives to compete at the highest level, only to have that chance taken away.
Now, a team of ten, including swimmers, runners, and judokas from Syria, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Congo have been given the chance to compete at the Games under the Olympic flag. They’ve also been given their own coaches, officials, uniforms and a chef, all paid for by the IOC. And in the past few months they’ve been training hard. The IOC says it wants the team to inspire and give hope to other refugees, and draw attention to the issues millions of other around the world are facing. And these guys say they are up to the task whether they win gold or not.
“These refugee athletes will show the world that despite the unimaginable tragedies that they have faced, anyone can contribute to society through their talent, skills and strength of the human spirit,” the statement continues.
24.What does the underlined sentence mean
A.She trained all her life. B. She swam for the glory of life.
C. She swam to escape being drowned. D. She swam to escape from other refugees.
25.Where do Yusra and her sister live as refugees now
A.Syria. B. Germany. C. Congo. D. Ethiopia.
26.Which of the following is NOT a reason why the refugees are threatened to leave their country
A.Race. B. Violence. C. Religion. D. Nationality.
27. Why did the IOC allow a team of refugees to complete in the Olympic Games
A. To help the refugees to fulfill their dreams of winning the Olympic gold medal.
B.To offer the refugees a chance to earn bread by themselves.
C.To light a candle of hope for all the refugees in the world.
D.To curse the darkness of the society by forcing them to pay attention to the life of refugees.

About 10 percent of public school students in the United States learn English as a second language. In some states, that number is much higher. About five million students in the country are considered English language learners, or ELLs. Such students are the fast-growing group in the US public schools.
The most commonly first spoken languages among ELLs in America are Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Haitian Creole and Vietnamese. Speakers of those five languages make up 92 percent of all ELLs included in the report.
English language learners can choose one of several kinds o1 program. There are some programs, in which students are mostly taught in their native language. And there are other programs, which offer students almost all classroom teaching in English. However, These kinds of programs do not always allow students to write and read in their native language.
There are also so-called bilingual programs. These programs offer teaching in two languages-English and another language. Research has shown that English language learners do best in bilingual programs, especially if the second language is their native language.
The lack of high-quality bilingual programs is clear. Nationally, about 83 percent of students complete their high school education. But the graduation rate (比率) among English language learners is far lower 65 percent.
School systems across the country sometimes look for bilingual educators internationally. But education experts say there are ways for states to find and train new teachers in their own areas. This spring, America came up with a list of “grow your own” rules for schools and states to follow. It advised states to offer a series of ways for bilingual teachers. It also suggested training bilingual teachers in their own areas even if they do not have a college degree.
28. What can we learn about English from paragraph 1

Living on the Florida Emerald Coast, people view a hurricane(飓风) as a common thing. So it is not unusual for a family to have several full gas cans(金属容器) and bottled water stored in their houses all summer.
Though unwilling to evacuate(撤离) from a hurricane, on September 15,my family was forced to leave our home for my grandfather's house several miles away. We spent the early part of that evening watching the hurricane draw closer on the Weather Channel. Around nine o'clock, a loud sound shook the house, turned over the roof and carried it off. Soon came an indoor rainstorm.
Realizing the damage, my grandfather began to be afraid. The storm had started, but he still ran out into the heavy rain and wind to see how much of the roof was left. We got him back inside. I had never seen him so scared. Mom finally asked him to lie down in his room.
The leak(裂缝) had progressed rapidly. It soon became a race against time to protect what was saved. Some people may think it necessary to save material things, but I hoped to save those items with emotional value, such as the photos. I still feared the storm, but I more feared the influence it brought.
The next morning, it started to clear up. Thankfully, my family weathered the storm, though the same could not be said for the house. Only the wooden beams remained, but inside many of his things were safe. My mom and I had worked tirelessly through the night.
It was late, but we were still unwilling to go to bed. We discussed the rebuilding of the house. Under the beautiful sky, we suggested looking after my grandfather more often in the future. After this disaster, I realized the truth that the hurricane itself was not so terrible if we loved each other.
32.Why do the people store full gas cans and bottled water
A. To save much money. B. To watch a hurricane easily.
C. To protect their houses well. D. To be prepared for hurricanes.
33. How did the author's grandfather feel during the hurricane
A. Frightened. B. Surprised. C. Calm. D. Angry.
34. What does the underlined word "weathered" in paragraph 5 mean
A. Prepared well for. B. Waited patiently for.
C. Came safely through. D. Suffered seriously from.
35. What may the author learn from the experience
A. Family love is powerful. B. Take things as they come.
C. Good health is over wealth. D. Lost time is never found again

M: Since you are Chinese, you may face some cultural differences. How do you plan to deal with that
W: Every place is different. I know that I may become upset while I am in a new place. It's important to remember that I am a guest in that place, and I should respect the culture.
M: Do you expect that most of your friends are Americans, or will you try and make friends with other foreigners
W: Well, I certainly won't know about that until I arrive in America. I expect that it might be easier to make friends with other foreigners, because we will all be going through the culture shock. I would like to have friends from everywhere .

W: What’s been hard about being an Indiana basketball player
M: Well, the training is very competitive — weightlifting and running every day. It’s not like high school. In high school, I really didn’t have to do that. I’m just trying to get used to it. And I think I am.
W: At this point, how do you see yourself fitting into this group
M: I think we are all different. George is from Britain. Chris and Leo are from Australia. I’m from France. And the rest are Americans. But I get along with everybody. You know, we are really starting to bond. It’s great to see how we grow each day as a team.

In the west, people hug for many different reasons. Family and friends sometimes hug just to show the other person they care. They may hug a loved one that they haven’t seen for a while. Or hug someone who will be leaving for a long period of time.
Hugs are also given to comfort someone who is sad or to congratulate someone who has good news.
Hug reduces tension and raises self-confidence. Scientists even found that hugging can have a positive effect on a person’s IQ.
Some Chinese friends think all westerners love to hug. But some western cultures encourage hugging more than others. The French, for example, are some of the most affectionate people in the world. Researchers have observed that the French touch each other more than 100 times during a 30-minute conversation. American, however, typically only touch each other twice during the same time period.
Italians and Greeks are known for giving lots of hugs. But British people, like Americans, tend to be a little more

Dear Tom,
I understand that you’re feeling anxious about starting high school and worried about whether you'll fit in or not. Please don’t feel too stressed out; almost everyone feels the same way when going through such a transition.
To help you manage the pressure, here are some suggestions. Firstly, take the initiative to introduce yourself to new classmates and teachers. Being proactive can help you build friendships faster. Secondly, join clubs or sports teams that interest you, which not only enriches your life but also provides a platform where you can meet people who share similar interests. Lastly, remember that it’s okay to ask for help if you feel overwhelmed.
I truly believe that you will adapt quickly and enjoy your time in high school. Looking forward to hearing about your new experiences.
Yours,
Li Hua
