People use languages to communicate(交流). Any language has its ways to express people's minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms(习语). An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say "I'm under the weather", they are saying that they're not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, "There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers" tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.
Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless headaches. On the other hand if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.
Metaphor (比喻) is often used in idioms. Let's read the following two examples:
Example 1: It makes my blood(血液) boil (煮沸) when my brother breaks my computer.
Example 2:The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside on a dark night.
In neither situation above, can our blood reach the point so high or so low in temperature. Yet, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to understand the ▲ feeling in the first example and very afraid in the second.
Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.
35.The passage tells us something about ___________in the English language.
A.grammar B.writing C.reading D.idioms
36.If your brother tells you he is under the weather, you can advise him to ___________.
A.see a doctor B.stay at home
C.take an umbrella D.wear fewer clothes
37.Which of the following words can be put in " ▲ "

38.What's the writer's suggestion when you come to an idiom that you can't understand
A.We should try to express our minds with it.
B.We should find an interesting way to learn it.
C.We should look it up in a good idiom dictionary.
D.We should create situations to guess its meaning.

Fights at school sometimes happen. But how can you keep away from a fight Here's something you can do.
Be calm. Sometimes, you feel so angry that you really want to teach somebody a lesson. But being angry can't solve problems. Neither can a fight. Instead, it may bring you more problems. In the school, everyone involved(卷入) in a fight will be punished, no matter who started it. There are no winners in a fight.
Shout loudly. If you know someone is coming up behind you to attack, turn toward the person with your hands up in front of your body and loudly say "stop", before walking away. Loud voice can usually make the attacker calm down. If the person doesn't stop, cry for help by calling out the name of a teacher whose office is nearby.
▲ Your friend may ask you to join in a fight. Learn to say no. Helping him fight is not really helpful to him. If you really want to give him a hand, try to ask him to give it up. Also, you can tell him if he gets involved in a fight, he may get hurt and be punished. Then, try to learn why he wants a fight and help him find a right way to deal with the problem.
If you follow my advice above, you may avoid being involved in a fight at school.

Billions of locusts (蝗虫) are moving through farms and fields in the East African countries of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.
Locusts are grasshoppers (蚱蜢). Normally grasshoppers don't travel in groups so they do little harm. But when there are lots of them, their bodies and behavior change. That's when they become locusts. Locusts travel in huge groups,
laying eggs along the way, which produces even more locusts. In a single day, a small swarm (群) of the insects can eat as much food as 35 , 000 people do.
The locust swarms in Ethiopia and Somalia are the worst in 25 years. These locusts are desert locusts. They began swarming about six months ago. By moving with the winds, desert locusts can travel up to 90 miles a day or more.
Locust swarms are more common when heavy rains follow a long dry period. The insects lay their eggs in the wet ground. This season, East Africa has had its heaviest rainy season in 40 years.
When the insects swarm (成群地飞来飞去), one square kilometer of land can hold as many as 150 million locusts. There are 700 square kilometers of land covered by the insects in Kenya alone.
The insects are a threat to lives in the regions, where food is already in short supply. Already many farmers who keep animals are struggling because locusts have eaten up the plants the animals usually live on
In East Africa, farmers have been shooting into the air or making noises in the fields, but that doesn't work against so many insects. Experts say that spraying pesticides (杀虫剂) over large areas from airplanes is the only way to reduce the number of the insects. The UN has released (释放) $ 10 million to help deal with the locust problem. The UN says about $70 million is needed to truly control the locusts with pesticides.

Eating out is more popular in Britain today. British people like to spend more eating out than cooking for themselves and eating at home. Many British people are becoming more and more interested in how good their food tastes, and also how healthy it is.

Classic books never go out of fashion. The book The Outsiders first came out in 1967. Although the book is old, it is still worth reading. It is written by US writer S. E. Hinton.
The book tells the story of a 14-year-old boy called Ponyboy Curtis. He struggles with difficult issues of right and wrong in a society where he is an outsider. The story took place in Oklahoma, US, in 1965.
In the book, the children are divided into two groups. One includes Curtis and Greasers. It is mostly made up of poor kids. They have longer hair and often smoke at a young age. The other group is called the Socs, which is made up of rich children. They wear expensive clothes and drive high-tech cars. Those two groups do not get along well. The book only shows us two weeks of the boys' life.
I was touched by the friendship among the boys. When any of them has a problem, the others will help. Although they are not well educated(教育), they are kind and brave. For example, when Johnny was hurt and in hospital, his friends visited him almost every day. They brought him food and told him interesting stories. I always dream of having a strong friendship like this.

Each year the number of cars on roads and streets is becoming larger and larger. Millions of new cars are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads or filling cars with gas. Americans won't live without cars!
Most Americans find it hard to think what life would be without a car. However, some have realised the serious problem of air pollution caused by cars. The polluted air is poisonous and dangerous to health.
One way to reduce the polluted air is to build a new kind of car. Some large car factories are trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. It develops very slowly.
Another way is to take the place of the car engine (发动机) by something else. Engineers are now working on some new cars. It will take years to develop it.
To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we'll have to make some changes in the way of life. Americans, for example, have to cut down the number of their cars. They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bike. Riding a bike is thought to help keep the air clean.
But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. And the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment (失业).
Although cars have brought us a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

In China, in Europe…in most areas, there are many kinds of transportation options you can choose. In America, not so much!
Consider this: Europe has Eurail, a train system that covers most of the continents, and China has high-speed trains(高速列车)as well as slower trains. In fact, the whole country is full of rails, making it easy to get anywhere. Trains are usually punctual(准时的), safe and efficient.
America has no train system to speak of. Nearly 100 major cities in America, such as Las Vegas and Nashville, have no train service at all. In South Dakota and Wyoming, many lines were given up in the last 30 years because they did not have enough money to keep them running. Some trains only run every 3 days, so if you have to be somewhere at a certain time, you'd have to make your schedule carefully.
Is it comfortable to fly across America Well, no. If you're hoping for something to eat, you'd better have a credit card(信用卡): all food must be bought, and you cannot pay with cash. "Plane food" is about as expensive as food you would buy at the airport.
But it is very safe when you fly in the USA. You can't bring sweaters or coats on the plane. It takes longer time to get through security than to check in to your flight and get to the gate!
