When Shannon and I walked to the famous Eiffel Tower, we were tired and thirsty.
The Eiffel Tower was just in front of us. The tower, which was designed and built by Gustave Eiffel in 1889 for the World’s Fair, seemed impossibly tall. Made up of 18,038 pieces of iron, it was thought unsound (不牢靠的) at that time, but it has stood the test of time.
Now about seven million tourists come to visit it every year. We were two of them!
However, our hearts sank when we found that we couldn’t afford the lifts (电梯) that could lift us up. So we walked the 704 steps to the second level. We could not continue to walk to the third level as there was lift access (入口) only. What a pity it was to come so far but not to be able to get to the top and have a bird’s eye view of Paris!
We stood on the second level, wishing that we had the money to go to the top level. As friendly young girls, we chatted with different people as they came and went. Shannon even had a talk with a staff member (职员) called Emma. She was very kind and let us go into the lift to the third level for free. You can imagine how excited we were.
Up we went. It was nearly evening and the night view at the top was fantastic. Emma even took us to the very top of the communication tower which the public was not allowed to go into.
Thanks to Emma, we had an experience that we will never forget.
