There’s no denying that learning a foreign language is difficult, and when it comes to speaking the language, it can be extremely tough. I remember walking into my first-ever Spanish class at university only to discover that half of my classmates were already fluent in many languages. It’s safe to say I felt out of my depth!
At first the thought of speaking Spanish terrified me; not only were my vocabulary and grammar very limited, but I had never spoken another language before. However, I was determined to overcome my fear, and by adopting a few simple methods I have been able to build my confidence and make progress. In fact, it was not as terrible as I thought. Here, I think I will share a few tips with you.
Firstly, it is OK to make mistakes for language learners and that you should accept them. This sounds obvious, but when it comes to language learning we often aim for perfection and feel as though we are not ready to speak until we have “enough” words or grammatical knowledge. The truth is that you will never feel ready, and instead it is important to use the knowledge to communicate what you can.
This leads on to my next tip: don’t compare yourself to others. This can be a hard one, especially if you are in a large language class. It is important to remember that we all learn at different speeds and through different styles of learning. Something that really helped me progress was finding a patient language exchange partner. Finding someone whose level of English was similar to my level of Spanish to practice with made me feel much more confident
Lastly, celebrate the small success and remember how far you have come! Instead of focusing on how far you have to go, focus on the progress you have already made and be proud of your achievements!
24.What does the underlined part suggest in the passage
A.The author took great pride in his classmates.
B.The author was unable to speak many languages.
C.The author wanted to leave university immediately.
D.The author failed to join in his classmates’ conversation.
25.What is the common barrier for language learners
A.They can’t use the language in right situations.
B.They fail to have a good command of grammar.
C.They can’t help comparing themselves to others.
D.They have a lack of courage to speak the language.
26.What’s the best way to learn Spanish in the author’s opinion
A.Find a partner whose Spanish is excellent.
B.Set long-term goals to improve interest.
C.Learn from an example and pick out weak points.
D.Choose a language exchange partner at the same level.
27.What does the author want to tell in the passage
A.Learning new languages is not so hard.
B.Mastering Spanish is a chance in a million.
C.Confidence is the key to speaking a language.
D.Don’t ignore what you have achieved in learning.

The levees (防洪堤) that protect New Orleans held up against Hurricane Ida’s fury (猛烈), passing their first big test since Hurricane Katrina that struck 16 years ago. The government spent billions of dollars to upgrade the city’s levee system which had failed before Katrina. But the effort couldn’t spare some neighboring communities from Ida’s terrible storm surge (风暴潮).
Many people living in LaPlace, located 25 miles west of New Orleans, had to be rescued from rising floodwaters. Marcie Jacob Hebert ran away before Ida. But she has no doubt that the storm flooded her LaPlace home. Her house didn’t flood during Katrina. But it took on nearly two feet of water during Hurricane Isaac in 2012. “We didn’t have these problems until everybody else’s levees worked,” said Hebert, 46. “It may not be the only cause, but I sure do think it makes a difference.”
Gov. John Bel Edwards said a recent survey of levees across Louisiana showed they did exactly what they were for and held the water out. “We don’t believe there is a single levee anywhere now that actually broke or failed. There were only a few smaller levees in New Orleans that failed,” Edwards said.
After Katrina, the government spent $14.5 billion on projects designed to improve protection from storm surge and flooding in New Orleans and nearby areas. The system is a 130-mile ring built to hold out storm surge of about 30 feet. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina produced a storm surge that flooded about four-fifths of the city, causing over 1,800 deaths.
Work recently began on a levee project to protect LaPlace and other communities outside New Orleans’ levee system. That project will be completed in 2024.
“I’m glad they’re building us a levee, but I worry about what happens to the next group further to the west,” Hebert said. “The water has got to go somewhere no matter how many levee systems are built. We can’t just keep moving it from person to person, place to place.”
28.What is the reason for the flooding in LaPlace according to Hebert
A.Heavy rainfall. B.Weather change. C.Levees breaking. D.Nearby levees.
29.What does Edwards think of the flood protection system in New Orleans
A.It costs too much. B.It may cause danger.
C.It is generally satisfying. D.It badly needs improvements.
30.What does the author want to do in paragraph 4
A.Provide some helpful suggestions. B.Offer some background information.
C.Introduce a new topic for discussion. D.Discuss the causes of the problem.
31.Which of the following would Hebert most probably agree with
A.Levees cannot completely solve the problem.
B.Some locals had better move away from LaPlace.
C.The levee project in LaPlace won’t be finished on time.
D.It is a mistake to build a levee system for locals in LaPlace.

It happens in every disaster: For those in need, people often donate things that turn out to be more of a trouble.
Juanita Rilling remembers it happened in 1988 when she was a disaster expert trying to help people suffering from a hurricane in Honduras. “One morning I received a call from one of our logistic operators (物流运营商), and he explained to me that there was a plane carrying medical supplies that needed to land,” says Rilling. “But the ground was full, with lots of donations that no one had required. The plane—full of needed supplies—had to find someplace else to go. And it ended up stopping everyone’s plans by about 48 hours, which is important time in a disaster.”
Rilling now runs the Center for International Disaster Information, which is trying to make sure things like that don’t happen again. So when Superstorm Sandy hit, Rilling’s group started a project to encourage money donation. “Even a small donation can make a big difference and can quickly become exactly what people affected by a disaster need most,” Rilling says. But despite this, donators do that over and over. About 60% of the things donated after a disaster couldn’t be used. Often it’s old clothing or food.
Meghan Hara, who deals with kind donations for the American Red Cross, says she knows that some people are careful with giving money. And she doesn’t think that the need to give something concrete (实物) should be completely stopped.
“Part of what people are doing is that they’re helping, and they’re trying to help. What we need to work out is how to effectively deal with that,” Hara says.
32.What caused needed supplies to be put off after the hurricane in 1988
A.Workers on the plane. B.A weather report.
C.Useless donations on the ground. D.The call from the operator.
33.What did Rilling’s group suggest donating when Superstorm Sandy hit
A.Clothing. B.Money. C.Medicine. D.Food.
34.What is Meghan Hara’s attitude towards donating concrete things
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Uncaring. D.Worried.
35.What might the author continue talking about
A.Studies on natural disasters. B.The benefits of helping others.
C.Tips on choosing useful donations. D.The ways of managing people’s donations.

Would you know what to do if a fire started in your home Take the time now to review the following safety tips, and your family will be prepared in time of a fire in your home:
36
An escape plan can help every member of a family get out of a burning house. The idea is to get outside quickly and safely. 37 So it is important to learn and remember the different ways out of your home.
Stay low.
If you can see smoke in the house, stay low to the ground as you make your way to the exit. 38 You will breathe less smoke if you stay to the ground. Smoke naturally rises, so if there is smoke while you are using your escape route, staying low means you can crawl (爬) under most of it.
What if you can’t get out right away
If you can’t get out fast because fire or smoke is stopping an escape route, you will want to yell for help. You can do this from an open window or call 911 if you have a phone with you. 39 Then, firefighters will have a hard time finding you. The sooner they find you, the sooner you both can get out.
If your clothes catch fire, what should you do
Your clothes could catch fire during a fire or by accident if you step too close to a candle. If this happens, don’t run! Instead, stop, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll. This will cut off the air and put out the flames. 40
An easy way to remember this is: Stop, Drop, and Roll!
Smoke from a fire can make it hard to see where things are.
Preventing fires is in the first place!
Know your way out.
They will help prepare you for what you need to do in case of a fire.
Even if you are scared, never hide under the bed or in a closet.
In a fire, smoke and poisonous (有毒的) air hurt more people than the actual flames do.
