Step 3 Understanding the complex sentences
T: Paraphrasing a sentence means reconstruct the sentence to deliver the difficult sentence in an easy way without changing the meaning of the original text.

【设计意图:解读难句手段之一是英英释义,首先简要介绍释义,然后引导学生对课文中难句进行释义。这上做法旨在帮助学生深度理解课文。】
T: Due to the length and complex grammatical structure, some sentences in the text are hard to cope with. However, if you can find out the main body of the sentence, it will be much easier for you to understand the whole sentence. Now let’s try some sentences.
1. I once had an art teacher, pointing out that it is not only what you can see that is important, but also what you cannot see. (选必四P44)
1. The main body of the sentence is “I…had…teacher”. The present participle “pointing out” is adverbial with the first “that” guiding an object clause. In the object clause, there exists an emphasized pattern with “it…that”. In the emphasized pattern, two “whats” guiding subject clauses are emphasized parts.
2. Finally, understand that it is not sufficient to simply know something or to understand what you know, because for knowledge to have concrete value, it must be applied. (选必四P45)
2. The main body of the sentence is an imperative sentence “understand that…” with “that” guiding an object clause. In the object clause, “it” is the formal subject and “to simply know…or to understand…” is the actual subject. The conjunction “what” guides an object clause. The conjunction “because” guides an adverbial clause. The part “is import” is Copula and predicative of the object clause.
【设计意图:解读难句手段之二是长句分析,长句语法结构复杂,当抽出句子主干,句子就容易理解了,此节引导学生理解课文中的长难句,进而帮助学生掌握阅读长句的技巧。】
