1. know something about the popularity of learning Chinese with brainstorming and discussion;
2. write an article about the popularity of learning Chinese by using a formal and objective tone;
3. improve the learning ability by evaluating other classmates’ writing.

Step 1 Lead-in
The teacher shows some messages from her pen pals on Wechat:
Thomas: When it comes to Chinese, I started learning it at high school, and I enjoyed it so much that I continued studying it at the university of Leeds. We learnt to speak, as well as to read and write Chinese.
Jenny:I sigh up for an evening course to learn a little bit of Chinese at the local community center near where I live in Melbourne. I am pleasantly surprised that speaking is easier than I have expected.
Pedro: I learn Chinese through an online course, and I think the hardest is the pronunciation. But to help me during the trip to China next year, I still try my best.

Step 2 Brainstorming
The teacher asks Ss to have a brainstorming about why more and more people starting to learn Chinese across the world.

Step 3 Group discussion
1.The teacher asks students to have a group discussion:
Do you think learning Chinese will continue to be popular in the future Why or why not
Then several groups present their opinions and reasons.
E.g. There is no doubt that learning Chinese will continue to be popular in the future. Because it opens doors for both Chinese and foreigners, not only economically, but also culturally and academically.

Step 4 Before writing
Learning about the structure.
To talk about the popularity of learning Chinese, the teacher asks students to think about how they will develop the article.
The teacher leads students to draw a mind map about the structure.
Introduce the phenomenon (adding some typical examples)
The popularity of learning Chinese Analyze the reasons behind the phenomenon
Predict the future about the popularity of Chinese learning

The teacher shows some sentences to students:
It is claimed that over 4,000 overseas universities offer Chinese language courses and about 25 million people are learning Chinese outside China.
It is found that studying Chinese provides access to wonderful Chinese history and culture.
It is estimated that learning Chinese is becoming so popular that the language has been included in the education systems of more than 75 countries.
It is reported that many foreigners learn Chinese to have a better understanding of China.
It is expected that learning Chinese will remain popular in the future because it opens doors for both Chinese and foreigners.
It is known that with the development of Chinese economy, a lot of foreigners come to China to learn its culture and language.
It is understood that more and more foreigners choose to study Chinese at a Chinese university.
The teacher leads students to know that when introducing a phenomenon, a formal and objective tone is often used, and the structure “it+be+verb-ed form+that -clause” is often a good choice.

Step 5 Writing
The teacher asks students to make a draft by themselves within 12 minutes.

Beautiful handwriting

Step 6 Sharing and peer review
1.Students are asked to exchange their writing and better it for each other.
2.The teacher asks several students to share their writing with the class, and other students evaluate the writing according to the requirements:
Does the introduction sound objective and convincing
Are there any grammar mistakes in the writing
Are there any proper linking words to make the writing logical
Is the handwriting beautiful

A language for life
It has been found that around the world, the number of people learning Chinese at schools, universities, community centres or online is growing. The language has been included in the education systems of more than 75 countries. Over 4,000 overseas universities offer Chinese language courses and it's estimated that about 25 million people are learning Chinese outside China. Never has the demand been greater.
As a Chinese, it's interesting that foreigners find our native language fascinating.However, I can understand their fascination, because Chinese is a charming language filled with a long history, beautifully written characters, rich culture and considerable depth in its meaning. Any foreigner who masters the Chinese language would feel that it is a worthy accomplishment.
There are several other reasons why foreigners are choosing to learn Chinese. Tourists may choose to take courses in Chinese before their trip. By learning useful travel expressions, they can navigate their way around the city and carry out basic tasks such as ordering food or negotiating prices. Other foreigners might choose to study Chinese at a Chinese university so that they can apply for jobs that may require a good knowledge of the Chinese language. For example, the China Belt and Road Initiative has created thousands of local jobs in many countries along the Silk Road.Working together with Chinese engineers may require people who can speak Chinese.So possible job applicants would be motivated to learn Chinese as an additional language.
There is no doubt that learning Chinese will continue to be popular in the future.Knowing Chinese can lead to many opportunities for both Chinese people and foreigners. Moreover, learning Chinese can broaden people's minds and enrich their lives in many different ways.
