I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
know about white lies by reading and listening;
use some guided strategies in listening and improve the ability of reading analysis;
form the understanding of white lies.
II. Key competence focus
Improve the ability to extract effective information through listening and reading.
III. Predicted area of difficulty
Discover the meaning of white lies and express the opinions freely.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Brainstorming
T sings a song to the Ss.
T asks the following questions:
What is the title of the song
What do white lies mean
【设计意图:老师用一首与主题相吻合的歌曲进入课堂,旨在营造气氛,激发学生的兴趣,迅速完成导入,为课堂主题做好铺垫,进入阅读环节。】
Step2 Reading
T asks the Ss a question before reading: If you receive a birthday gift you don’t really like, what will you do
T asks the following questions after reading the two accounts on page 8:
·What is the birthday gift Granny gave to Anne
·What was the white lie Anne told and why did she tell the lie
·How did Grandma find out the truth and how did she feel
T asks the Ss to have a pair discussion: How do Anne and Grandma deal with their embarrassment

Step 3 Listening
1.T instructs the Ss to understand the listening strategies: 4 steps while listening.
Listening strategies:
1) Pay attention to the general idea or the aspects to be talked about in the introduction during the first listening.
2) Fix your eyes on the process information about the event happening to the protagonist during the second listening.
3) Be absorbed in detailed information about the protagonist in gap-filling.
4) Focus on some time words and linking words, such as during, however, during the listening.
2. T asks Ss to listen to the recording for the first time and finish B1 on page 9.
Suggested answers: FTTT
T asks Ss to predict the answers of B2 and finish it by listening to the recording again.
Suggested answers:
Small (2) strengthen relationships (3) problems
embarrassment or trouble (5) trust
T checks the answers and listens to the difficult points with the students again.

Step 4 Discussing and sharing
T asks the Ss to share something in pairs by asking the following questions:
What are white lies
Do white lies always bring about good results Why or why not
Would you tell white lies or not Why
Some useful expressions:
·Although/Though/Even though/Even if...
·It is true that..., but...
·I admit..., however, ...
·While..., I can see that...
