T: Now, in pairs, discuss Chinese people’s reading habits and different ways to encourage reading.
Sample answer:
A: You know, reading is important. It increases our knowledge and gives us a better understanding of the world.
B: True. Reading can also be entertaining and provides an escape from daily pressures. I saw a recent survey on Chinese people’s reading habits that showed that we spend almost 80 minutes per day reading on smartphones.
A: That’s a good thing. It’s promising to see that reading is still a favourite pastime for many Chinese.
B: It also stated that reading on digital platforms is on the rise, with close to 70% of people choosing this method. Reading on smartphones is especially popular.
A: It’s probably because digital platforms are more convenient.
B: Exactly. It’s more common for people to read online nowadays. What are your reading habits
A: I must admit I do most of my reading online. I normally use my smartphone to read when I’m on the subway. So that’s about one hour per day. What about you
B: I rarely read on my phone. I love the feel of actual books, so I often borrow books from my local library.
A: Sounds great. No matter which reading method, people should be encouraged to read more. I think people ought to be provided with more digital options, like e-books or audio books.
B: Agreed. Readers can also try to incorporate more traditional reading into their life. I think visiting the local library is one good way because it’s fun to browse through a wide variety of printed books.
A: Great idea. I also know libraries hold exchange activities and reading events more frequently than before. So, readers have more chances to become involved.
B: Absolutely! Public awareness about the importance of reading, whether online or traditional, could lead to people increasing how much and how often they read.
A: Generally speaking, once people develop a habit of reading every day, their enjoyment will grow, one page at a time!

Let’s read more!
Why is reading important Reading increases our knowledge and gives us a better understanding of the world. Besides, reading can be very entertaining and it provides an escape from daily pressures.
A recent survey on Chinese people’s reading habits showed that the Chinese spend a lot of time reading, almost 80 minutes a day on smartphones in fact. The charts in the survey show that reading on digital platforms is on the rise, with close to 70% of people choosing this method probably because digital platforms are more convenient. Of all platforms available, reading on smartphones is the most popular method. It is promising to see that reading is still a favourite pastime for many Chinese.
To encourage people to read more, there are a few things that can be done. First of all, as more people prefer digital reading now, they can be provided with other options like e-books or audio books. Additionally, people should be encouraged to incorporate more traditional reading into their lives. For example, visiting the local library can be an enjoyable way to browse through a wide variety of printed books. Readers may have more opportunities to become involved in book exchange activities and reading events.
In summary, there are many reasons to increase the amount of reading time in your life and it is worth trying. Once you develop a habit of reading every day, your enjoyment will grow stronger, one page at a time!

V. Homework
1. Watch the micro lesson again: Complex cause and effect (Optional)
2. Workbook B1P78-79(Optional)
1) “Trick” means a good method or a way of doing something that works well.
2) With a fixed mindset, people believe that their intelligence is fixed and that talent is more important than effort. Alternatively, people with a growth mindset think that their intelligence can grow with time and experience. People with a fixed mindset are afraid of challenges and tend to give up on difficult problems, but people who have a growth mindset usually jump right in, learn from mistakes and work hard to solve difficult problems.
3. Workbook B2P79. (Optional)
Sample answer:
Be prepared to fail and learn from it
After reading the article, I understand that my way of thinking, which is more like a fixed mindset, isn’t always very helpful. A fixed mindset means believing that your intelligence is permanent and does not change no matter how hard you study.
Thinking of my intelligence as fixed makes me really scared of making mistakes and my biggest problem is that I expect everything I do to be perfect. This fear of failure prevents me from trying new things, and I realize that I really need to change this. This is why I decided to make a study plan with three main goals.
Stop being afraid of making mistakes
I’m worried about making mistakes, so I often feel shy about speaking and asking questions in class. However, mistakes are an important part of learning, and if we don’t make mistakes, we won’t learn. To solve this problem, I have set myself the goal of asking at least three questions in class every week.
Find challenges
To some extent, people who are afraid of making mistakes also fear challenges. If we play it safe all the time and only do things that we are confident about, we won’t acquire any new skills. Now that I have decided to try doing something new and interesting every week, I have made a list of things that I consider challenging so as to improve myself. For example, I find English writing difficult, so I have decided to start keeping a diary in English to record my daily life.
Encourage others to have a good mindset
Lastly, we need to support our friends and classmates. I have set myself another new goal: I should always encourage the people around me to embrace challenges and try new things. It is wrong to tease others when they make mistakes; instead, we should all work together to create a safe and friendly study environment so that everyone can develop their skills and acquire new knowledge.
