Step 1 Listening
1. Understand and apply the listening tip.
T: Let’s listen to two listening segments and do two exercises.
(1) What can we say about the woman
A. She’s generous. B. She’s curious. C. She’s helpful.
M: Hello, do you have The Best of Mozart W: Um ... sorry, we’ve just sold out. But we can order one for you. If you give us your number, we’ll call you when the CD arrives.
T: Which is right
T: “She’s helpful”. The woman doesn’t have the required CD. But she says she can order one for him, which shows she is ready to help the man. So C is right.
(2) How does the woman feel about James’ situation
W: Did you know James went out of business M: Really When was that W: Last month. M: That’s too bad! He had owned that business for 15 years. What happened W: I don’t know. But life must be pretty tough for his family now. His sons are still so young. One is 13 and the other is 10. M: Well, maybe things are not as bad as they seem to be. W: I hope so.
A. Embarrassed. B. Concerned. C. Disappointed.
T: Which is the best choice
T: Yes. B is right. The woman must be worried about James.
T: Let’s read through the listening tip of this lesson.
When listening, sometimes you may need to know the speakers’ attitudes. You should try to listen for some words or phrases that have a positive or negative meaning, e.g. good/ great/fantastic, I like/enjoy; bad/terrible/awful, I don’t like/dislike.
2. Guess before listening.
T asks some Ss to guess before listening.
T: Please read through the six sentences first. Then guess what we are going to listen.
T: Right. There must be two speakers talking about aliens from a film. They may talk about their likes and dislikes of the film. Perhaps they will also talk about the humans involved with aliens.
3. Listen for true-false tests.
T: Please go through the requirements and listen carefully before finishing A1.
4. Listen for note-taking.
T: Listen to the recording again and finish A2.
5. T exhibits the tapescript on the screen.

Step 2 Read a comic strip
T asks Ss to read a comic strip about aliens and fill in the table.
T: Jenny and Bob have found a comic strip about aliens. Look at the comic strip and fill in the table.
