Writing a poetry review
T asks Ss to write an article about their understanding of “The Road Not Taken”.
T: Write an article about your understanding of “The Road Not Taken”. Use your ideas from part C and the information in parts A and B to help you.
1. Planning your writing
·Learning about the text type
An article about your understanding of a poem is called a poetry review, in which you describe the symbolic meaning of the words and images in a poem, and provide a personal understanding of the poem.
e.g. What do the two roads in the poem symbolize
·Learning about the structure
When writing an article about your understanding of the poem, you can follow the structure below:
Introduce the poet and the poem briefly.
Tip: In the introduction, you can describe the poet’s writing style. For example, Robert Frost often used rural scenes to explore deep questions about the human condition. As for the poem, you can share the story behind the poem, which will make both the poem and your writing interesting.
Analyse and evaluate the artistic characteristics of the poem, such as its sound, images and figurative devices.
Tip: When analysing, you should use some examples to support your ideas.
Sample: Frost also uses rural scenes to explore deep questions about life, and metaphor and imagery are employed to represent the feelings we have when faced with decisions. In the first stanza, the readers are asked to visualize diverging roads as the choices we are faced with. Then it continues to connect with emotions we feel during the decision-making process. For example, regret is expressed in the line, “And sorry I could not travel both”.
Give your understanding of the poem’s meaning. It is a good idea to refer to your personal experience or emotion in this part.
Tip: Your personal experience or emotion should be true, which will make your writing more convincing.
·Learning about the language
To express your opinion, you can use expressions such as in my opinion, from my point of view, in my eyes, I think/find/suppose/assume, my opinion/view/ belief/ impression is that, as for me, and it seems to me that.
