In a heart-pounding display of courage and quick thinking, a 65-year-old crane operator(起重机操作员)became an unexpected hero as he rescued a man trapped on top of a towering building engulfed(吞没)in flames.
Glen Edwards, a crane operator from Egham, was expressing his gratitude after a tense rescue operation in Reading last Thursday. Edwards found himself in a challenging situation as he navigated circling winds to save a man trapped by smoke and flames on a building. The dramatic rescue unfolded amid(在.....中)thick black smoke, making visibility nearly impossible
When the alarm sounded, Edwards, who had a concrete skip(吊斗)on his crane, wasted no time the moment he spotted the distressed man waving his coat. Employing his experience and knowledge of the area, Edwards attached a metal cage to the crane, carefully considering his options for the rescue. However, the challenging conditions, with smoke sheltering his view, added an extra layer of difficulty to the operation.
With a colleague providing guidance and a concerned crowd watching from below, Edwards skillfully operated the crane to rescue the man. The onlookers erupted in cheers and applause as the man was safely lifted to the ground.
Reflecting on the intense experience, Edwards remarked, “It seemed to pass a long time until the man got inside. The adrenaline(肾上腺素)was pumping.” He admitted to experiencing shaking after the rescue, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
Despite the successful operation, Edwards is yet to meet the man he saved, humorously noting, “He’s got to take me across the road for a drink!”
The heartwarming part of this story is the overwhelming support Edwards has received from well-wishers. A fund-raising page was set up to “buy Edwards a beer as a sign of gratitude,” initially aiming for f5.000 but now standing at an impressive 9,100. The community’s response has left Edwards deeply moved. He stated, “It means a lot; some of the comments have been absolutely fantastic.”

If you’re aiming to cut back on meat and you want to build muscle strength, you’re not alone. Now, a new study finds that swapping red and processed meat for plant protein a few times a week leads to better health and lowers carbon emission.
“We found that there was an increase in life expectancy of approximately nine months linked to50% reduction of red meat consumption,” says Olivia Auclair. “When it comes to diet changes to improve health and climate, we don’t need to go to major extremes or completely wipe out foods from our diet.”
But sudden changes can be jarring. For a long time Kyle Backlund had been in the habit of eating meat at many meals, and when he cut back, he felt a drop in his energy level and experienced some tiredness and weakness. When he realized he needed to increase his protein intake, his wife Stephany Marreel, who does most of the cooking and also eats a plant-based diet, found a solution by adding tofu, vegetables, and grains. Kyle says he is now feeling good on his plant-focused diet.
People can get all the protein and nutrients they need from a plant-based diet as long as they do a little planning, says Dr. Christopher Gardner, a food scientist. “If someone is consuming a reasonable variety, meeting protein needs from plant sources is no problem,” Gardner says.
There’s an environmental argument for shifting diet as well, Gardner says. Livestock(家畜)require lots of land and water. Beef production requires 20 times more land and produces 20 times more greenhouse gas emissions, per gram of protein, compared to beans. If people in the U. S. swapped beef for beans, this one switch alone could get the U. S. about halfway to its greenhouse gas reduction goals.
28. What should you do to improve health and climate according to Olivia Auclair
A. Change your meat-based diet a little. B. Give up red meat in your meals.
C. Become a devoted plant-protein lover. D. Take up proper ways of cooking.
29. What does the underlined word “jarring” in the third paragraph probably mean
A. Admirable. B. Upsetting. C. Meaningful. D. Rewarding.
30. How can one meet his protein needs while following a plant-based diet
A. By exercising more. B. By consuming less red meat.
C. By eating various foods. D. By having whole grain.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Cattle are the main source of greenhouse gases.
B. Americans are reducing greenhouse gas emission.
C. Shifting diet can be beneficial to the planet.
D. Bean production requires lots of land and water.

Children of all ages gathered in New York City recently for the International Toy Fair. Hidden among already popular toys were new, high-tech educational products. Toymakers are working to create these products for improving a child’s emotional intelligence.
Companies showed off their products last week at New York’s Jacob Javitz Convention Center. PleIQ is a set of plastic toy blocks. It uses visual reality technology to teach words, numbers and other things. Edison Duran directs the company that makes PlelQ. She showed people at the toy fair how virtual images appear on the blocks when they are held in front of a tablet camera.
On the other side of the center, Karen Hu from another company demonstrated an educational robot called Woobo. The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touch screen face to get them started. Hu described how the robot can help a child who has autism(自闭症). “The child can communicate with Woobo and follow some of the instructions Woobo is giving because he thinks of this as a companion instead of a parent or someone else telling him to do certain things.”
At the EQtainment stand, sales director Jonathan Erickson explained the company’s toys. “The purpose of all of our products is to develop emotional and social intelligence.” he said. Erickson showed off a board game called “Q’s Race to the Top. He said the game got his 4-year-old daughter to open up. “The biggest thing is her talking. And that’s the key of all this — getting her feelings expressed out. Like, ‘Hey, what does it feel like to be sad Or how does it feel like to be happy ’”
It remains to be seen whether a game or toy can improve emotional intelligence. But toymakers are doing what they can to help parents in their efforts to raise well-rounded children.
32. How does PleIQ instruct children to learn
A. By playing the role of a companion.
B. By giving direct guidance.
C. By taking photos with a camera.
D. By presenting visual images.
33. What can be inferred about Woobo from paragraph 3
A. It is programmed to replace teachers.
B. It may be good company for kids.
C. It can get started automatically.
D. It is intended to design games.
34. What does Jonathan Erickson think of his toys
A. They are quite easy to operate.
B. They can teach children numbers.
C. They help kids express themselves well.
D. They can show their emotions clearly.
35. What is the best title of the text
A. Toys help to build emotional intelligence
B. Educational toys sell well in the Toy Fair
C. Toymakers are making profits in education
D. Children celebrate the International Toy Fair

It was a sunny day. Anabia, an 11-year-old girl, was excited because today was the drawing contest at her school. Anabia was really good at drawing and usually got the highest marks in art. Her teachers would often ask her to make posters for school plays and call on her during free periods to help with cuttings, drawing, shading, colouring and much more. There was an art competition taking place in school and Anabia had worked really hard and wanted to win it. But there was one thing that was disturbing her today.
Recently, a new girl, Rida, had joined her class. She was also interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anabia was. Miss Saima, the art teacher, helped Rida and taught her tips and tricks to improve her drawing skill. And now Rida was also considered among the best artists in grade six.
Rida was quick, smart and intelligent. Anabia became jealous of Rida’s intelligence and felt that the new girl would be tough to beat.
So that day, for the art competition, Miss Saima took all the students to the art room, told them their roll numbers and gave important instructions. Anabia’s roll number was 16, while Rida was number 17. The bell rang, indicating the beginning of the contest. Miss Saima wrote on the board: make a scene of a sunset with a flowing river and a sailing boat.
Anabia knew that the best tools to make a sunset were oil pastels(油画棒). Anabia started to look for her oil pastels in her art bag. Then, after looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at home. Immediately, she got up to tell Miss Saima.
Miss Saima was disappointed at Anabia’s carelessness and told her that she could not help her, as it was her responsibility to be prepared for the contest that had been announced a week in advance. Anabia’s best friends were also there, but none of them offered to share anything, much to Anabia’s surprise and disappointment.
