We know that AI is not a real human. However, it seems many of us can't help treating it like one. In a survey of 2,000 people in the US,48 percent believed we should have good manners when talking to AI, said The New York Post.
Scientists at the Imperial College London in the UK made a similar discovery recently. They found that humans tend(往往会) to treat AI agents as social beings, showing sympathy (同情) toward them and even protecting them, Science Daily reported.
In their experiment, the scientists had 244 volunteers play an online ball game with an AI bot.A pretend volunteer also took part, and sometimes left out the Al on purpose by passing the ball only to human players.
As the scientists watched the game, they discovered that most of the time, the volunteers tried to fix the unfairness toward the bot by giving it the ball more often.
The finding is in line with the basic ideas of media equation theory (媒介理论), the scientists noted in their paper. Developed in the 1990s by scientists at Stanford University in the US, the theory suggests we often respond to(回应) media and technology like we do to real people and places, rather than just seeing them as tools.
While this could make humans and AI work better as a team, it also has risks, especially when AI bots are designed to act like“friends” to people.
An example is Replika, an AI companion chatbot launched in 2017. It has about 2 million users worldwide. “Your Replika will always be your side no matter what you' re up to,” reads its official website. But the AI's support turned dangerous when it encouraged Jaswant Singh Chail, a
young man in the UK, to carry out his plan to kill the Queen of England. Chail tried to do so in December 2021, but he was stopped in time. However, he still got a nine-year sentence.
Companies should avoid making AI too human-like in their design, advised the scientists at Imperial College London. This can help people tell the difference between virtual and real interactions.

After graduating in 2017, she joined Mattel, a leading US toy company known for popular products like Barbie. Sun's love for helping children drove her career(职业) choice. “Many parents think that playing with toys is a waste of time for children. However, playing games is an important way to learn and it also brings joy,” Sun explained.
The journey from an idea to a finished toy is complex with many steps, including market research, concept design, prototype(雏形) creation, testing and marketing. Once market researchers determine the type of toy product that Mattel is going to make, it's up to concept designers like Sun to offer specific ideas for the product. “For example, if we want to make a toy farm playset, I might suggest animal types and house shapes for the playset before passing the concept on to other designers to draw sketches(草图),” Sun explained.
During Sun's design process, many factors are considered, such as children's cognitive (认知的) abilities and a toy's educational value. Sun always keeps in mind whether her designs provide both fun and learning opportunities. “I once designed a spinner toy for children aged 3 to 6. They can combine (组合) different spinner pieces and launch them into the air with a launching machine,” Sun recalled. The toy introduces basic science concepts, like force and weight, while encouraging investigative(调查研究的) skills. “Children aged over 3 have basic logical thinking abilities, so it's important to design toys that develop their problem-solving skills,” Sun added.
Sun's experience at Mattel has taught her that real toy design goes beyond cool looks and features. It's about making functional toys that aid children's growth and development. To improve her skills, Sun is always looking for ways to observe (观察) and learn from children, helping her to create toys that truly add value to their lives. “I want to keep creating value for them,” she said.
