I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. discuss ideas for their time capsule to open in 2050;
2. write a letter to the people in 2050.
II. Key competence focus
1. Learn the speaking skill: Using proper tone and stress in dialogues.
2. Learn the ways to plan their writing.
III. Predicted area of difficulty
1. Learn how to express themselves in proper tone and stress.
2. Work out the outline of the writing.
IV. Teaching procedures
T greets the class.
T: Class begins, boys and girls! Good morning/afternoon!
Step 1 Speaking CP52
T Get Ss to review the “Tip” before making dialogues.
T: Here’s a short dialogue. What do you suppose B thinks of A
A: May I take the seat next to you B: Must you
T: B expresses his/her attitude in the rhetorical tone with a question. You can see B dislike A’s sitting beside him/her. So if A sat next to B, B would be unhappy.
T: Another example for you. What did Jane want to express
“Haven’t we met before ” asked Jane.
T: Jane expressed herself in the form of a negative question. As a matter of fact, it was a strong affirmation. Jane wants the other person to agree that they did meet somewhere. She stressed that she they had met each other before!
T: From the above two examples, we can see the importance of tone and stress in communication.
T: Supposing that you’ll make a time capsule, which would you put in and why What would you like to tell the people in the future What hopes and wishes do you have for the future
T: Before you make dialogues with your desk-mates, please review the tip at CP52.
T: So you know your tone and stress on certain words help express your ideas and emotions better. Do apply them properly.
Sample answers:
A: Let’s begin our letter with a description of the world now to help the people in 2050 understand how we live. For example, we’re currently living in an exciting time full of amazing scientific and technological discoveries.
B: Yes!We can mention some important technologies that affect our lives greatly, like the Internet and artificial intelligence. Without them, the smartphone we use today wouldn’t be possible.
A: Good idea!We could put my old smartphone in the capsule for them to see what it looks like and tell them more about it in the letter.
B: They’ll be impressed for sure! Smartphones allow us to do many things from anywhere and at any time: video calling, surfing the Internet, shopping online, and finding our ways with virtual directions.
A: Exactly! I think they’ll be interested to know how smartphones make our lives more convenient and also how advanced they are in our time, especially as a relatively new invention. I wonder if people of the future will still be using smartphones. What do you think
B: Perhaps. Maybe they’ll use some type of smart implant technology. That would be amazing!
A: It would be. However, I think we should also mention our current concerns about people relying too much on technology.
B: Right. They we can conclude our letter with our hopes for the future. We hope that people will have more balanced relationship with technology.

Step 2 Writing DP52
1. Learn about writing techniques: general and specific statements.
T: Suppose Catharine found it hard to write a composition. She writes “Xiao Zhang found a handbag in his taxi left by a foreign couple” and can’t go on. Would you help her out
T: You see, her writing is simple as a result of her general statements. When you describe, it is a good idea to give specific statements rather than general ones. In this case, it is much easier for you to get your ideas across.
T shows some Ss’ writings on the screen.
Sample answer:
Later, on the road, Xiao Zhang happened to find a handbag on the back seat of the taxi. To his surprise, on opening the bag, he found some US dollars and a passport. It must be the couple who had left it there!

2. Work out the outline
T: Since we have got a lot of information about the time capsule. In this lesson we’ll write a letter to the people in 2050.
T: In your dialogue, you must have included ideas like items to put into the capsule, reasons for them, your hopes and wishes, and other remarks to the people in the future. Try to use more ideas in your letter.
T: It’s necessary for you to work out the outline of the letter. You can also include some information in parts A and B.
Sample answer:
Introduce our time: full of amazing discoveries — important technologies, like smartphone.
People can’t tear themselves from smartphones.
Hope: have a more balanced life. Worry: depend on smartphone too much.
3. Finish off the letter
T: We have worked out the gist of the letter. Now finish off the letter, using the above outline.
Sample answer:
Dear friends from the future,
Greetings from the past! We are currently living in an exciting time that is full of amazing discoveries, especially in science and technology. Some especially important technologies that we use today are the Internet and artificial intelligence, without which the smartphone would not be possible. I have placed a typical smartphone in the time capsule for you to see.
The smartphone is a relatively new invention, but these days people could hardly live without it. It is extremely important for most people because it makes our lives more interesting convenient. We use the smartphone for many things besides messaging and calling, such as surfing the Internet, shopping online, and using virtual directions. I also have a lot of photos on it about my daily life, such as the food I eat, the cloths I wear and the sport I play. I wonder if you still use smartphones in the future or if you instead use some type of smart implant technology!
In the future, I hope that you will have a more balanced life with technology. I sometimes think that we rely too much on it. While I do not want to lose the advantages smartphones and other technologies bring, it would be nice for people to spend a bit less time using them. That is all for now! I hope you enjoyed seeing what life is like in my time!
